Face-off: Donald Trump and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Unread postby lpetrich » Sun 04 Aug 2019, 13:25:44

I've created this thread because the two seem to be the main opposing poles of recent American politics.

Their taglines:
  • Donald Trump: Make America great again.
  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: In a modern, moral, and wealthy society, no American should be too poor to live.
They have several similarities:
  • They were both born and raised in New York City.
  • Their mothers were immigrants and their fathers' parents were immigrants.
  • They are both adroit users of social media with large followings.
  • They both did activism before running for political office.
  • Their political offices are their first ones that they ever had or run for.
  • They ran as outsiders, as third-party candidates in their parties, against long established candidates.
But they have numerous differences, in policy proposals, in personality, in moral character, in command of language, in work ethic, in what they like to read or watch, how they got started in politics, etc. They also differ greatly on climate change and renewable energy.

Climate change:
  • DT: a Chinese hoax to sabotage others' economic development
  • AOC: a reality that we need to do a LOT more about
Renewable energy:
  • DT: objected to wind turbines as eyesores, also likes coal
  • AOC: supports it
Main weaknesses:
  • DT: his beloved estate Mar-a-Lago is very vulnerable to sea-level rise, and he ignores that
  • AOC: her knowledge of renewable energy seems rather limited

That means a vote of "both equally" - both equally bad.

The two have a lot of differences despite their similarities. Both of them started off as activists, and their campaigns received a lot of media coverage, but their paths into politics are very different.

Donald Trump was apolitical for a long time, but he was a real-estate dealer, a professional celebrity, and a reality-TV-show host. During Obama's presidency, he championed birtherism, the notion that Obama was born outside the US and was thus ineligible for the Presidency. In June of 2015, he rode down a gilded escalator in Trump Tower in NYC, and announced that he was running for President. He won big in the primaries, winning against several politicians who seemed like much more plausible candidates, and he had a squeaker victory in the main election.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's first love was science, and she did a high-school science project on extending nematodes' lives by feeding them antioxidants, as a test of the oxidative-stress theory. One of the antioxidants made the worms live almost twice as long. For this, someone named an asteroid after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez. She went to Boston University, studying biochemistry with the hope of becoming a doctor. Then her father died, and she asked why she'd have to wait 12 years before making much of a difference in people's lives. So she switched to economics and international relations. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Remarks at 2011 Boston University Martin Luther King Jr., Celebration - YouTube dates from then.

She interned for Teddy Kennedy and she got involved in educational programs and a children's book publisher, and she supported herself by being a waitress and a bartender. In 2016, she was involved in Bernie Sanders's campaign, and she was not very happy with Donald Trump's victory that year. The protesters of the Dakota Access Pipeline invited her to visit, and she and two friends set off in a car, driving the whole distance. Along the way, they visited Flint, MI, with its infamously contaminated water. When she arrived at the protest camp at Standing Rock Reservation, she was deeply impressed by their conviction and their commitment to nonviolent activism. That made her think that politics is not just for the rich and connected, and a few days later, she was recruited by Brand New Congress to run, recommended by her brother.

After that, she started the painstaking process of campaigning. She first had to get on the ballot, and she decided to get many more signatures than she needed, just in case some of them were challenged. She got on the ballot, and she continued to campaign. She had a bag of her campaign stuff that she hid when she was working, and when she got off work, she'd change into an office-lady dress and go to her district and knock on door after door after door. She did the end run of reaching out to people who usually didn't vote, and she campaigned in Spanish as well as in English.

Through all this campaigning, her opponent Joe Crowley didn't notice her. He was in the House for 20 years, and he had no primary challenger for 14 years. He was good at fundraising, and he seemed a likely candidate for House Speaker. Late in the campaign, AOC and JC had debates, or at least she tried to. He sent one of his staffers to debate her before debating her himself. Though he professed agreement with her on some issues, she asked him what he was doing about it.

Though JC outspent her some 19:1, and JC stuff was everywhere, AOC won 57%-43%. That upset made her famous, though she continued to campaign. She easily won the general election with 78%, with the Republican at 14%, Joe Crowley at 6%, and the Conservative at 2%.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Schooling Trump on How To Do Twitter | Opinion
While Twitter is biased toward impulsivity, for instance, it does not prevent someone from tweeting a thoughtful, carefully constructed message. It may discourage it, but it does not disallow it. I highlight this distinction because, as someone who studies Twitter, I am encouraged by the way Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) uses the platform. I am especially encouraged in contrast to the way that President Trump uses Twitter.

By virtually any measure, but specifically along the axes of aim, tone, and style, AOC's use of Twitter is far better for our politics and our nation than Donald Trump's.

She showed great dignity and eloquence in response to when President Trump demanded that she and three fellow Congresswomen go back to their homelands and only come back when they have fixed those countries -- she seemed almost presidential.

Donald Trump never tires of bragging about how great he is. It's hard to imagine him letting himself seem vulnerable, like where AOC tries to reassure herself that she can beat Joe Crowley ("Knock Down The House" documentary), or where she's startled by the "monster" in her sink - a garbage disposal.

I couldn't resist noting this contrast in personalities between the two:
Donald Trump: Like it or not, Tlaib and Omar are fast becoming the face of the Democrat Party. Cortez (AOC) is fuming, not happy about this!

AOC: (tears of laughter emoji)

(originals)
Donald J. Trump on Twitter: "Like it or not, Tlaib and Omar are fast becoming the face of the Democrat Party. Cortez (AOC) is fuming, not happy about this!" / Twitter
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter: "(tears of laughter emoji) https://t.co/W1q9zzgnN1" / Twitter

Also while DT angrily denounces "fake news" and supposedly failing newspapers like the New York Times, AOC has a different attitude: MSNBC on Twitter: ""I didn't expect them to make total fools of themselves," Rep. Ocasio-Cortez told @MSNBC's Chris Hayes. "I expected a little more nuance, and I expected a little more 'concern trolling.'" https://t.co/h0pclRdAI4" / Twitter In the video, you can see her grinning as some Fox News clips on her are played.

The two have in common that they both appreciate being loved, but DT gets very angry when someone doesn't love him as much as he thinks they should, and AOC doesn't.

Glad to see the anti-Jewish sentiments of the four socialists are once more front and center and the Dem presidential candidates are fully endorsing them. Trump did all that with a single tweet. Trump is the Godzilla of the troll world.

What "anti-Jewish sentiments"? Not hating Palestinians? They aren't exactly shouting "Jews will not replace us!"

Also, AOC was welcomed in a Jewish center in her district last December, where she lit a Hanukkah menorah. She described there how she likely has Jewish ancestors.

I'm not surprised a far left idiot like AOC has rabid supporters on this board. The woman has the intellectual capacity of a garden slug.

She described there how she likely has Jewish ancestors.

just like Warren has Cherokee ancestors..

It is guilt by association. She likes to be seen with Tlaib and Omar who are both very vocal wingnut anti-semites and has supported them on several occasions. AOC has also said Palestinians should be rioting and violence is OK. She has zero friends amongst the pro-Israeli groups in the US.

Those two ladies haven't exactly been chanting "Jews will not replace us!"

Also, AOC, RT, and IO have endorsed Bernie Sanders for President, and BS is Jewish. AOC had campaigned for BS back in 2016, so their relationship goes back some way.

Like most Palestinians, AOC and crew support terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah if they are killing Israelis.
