Dust Storms Kill Nearly 100 in Northern India

At least 95 people have died and scores more injured in fierce dust storms that hit the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The storms on Wednesday disrupted electricity, uprooted trees, destroyed houses and killed livestock.

Many of the dead were sleeping when their houses collapsed after being struck by intense bursts of lightning.

Dust storms are common in this part of India during summer but loss of life on this scale is unusual.

Sixty-four people died in Uttar Pradesh, 43 of them in Agra district which is home to the Taj Mahal monument. Officials say the death toll could increase.
“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.” ― Leonardo da Vinci

Insensible before the wave so soon released by callous fate. Affected most, they understand the least, and understanding, when it comes, invariably arrives too late.

Lotsa hail in the Netherlands today, I hear. Meanwhile here in Minnesota, our record breaking (for May) five-day 90+ temp heatwave just broke with lotsa rain that will keep my garden happy :)

(Especially since the city refuses to give me water access   )

Five fine days in Ireland is most certainly strange weather.

Meanwhile, in Sweden they are halting train traffic this weekend between the main cities because the rails are bending from heat!

UK weather: May 2018 hottest since records began in UK

I also expect some records to be broken in Ireland as well.

Last month was the warmest May since records began more than 100 years ago, the Met Office has said.

According to provisional figures, May 2018 saw an average daily maximum temperature of 17C (63F).

It would beat the previous May record of 16.9C set in 1992.

The Met Office said spring 2018, which ran from March to May, had been "very dynamic with many fluctuations". But the period was 0.3C higher than the average between 1981 and 2010.
