Sort of. I was a lurker at LATOC too, but never registered until the day before it went down :? Not sure what that was all about.

Hello from Finland!!

Unread postby finnpower » Fri 29 Oct 2010, 16:07:03

A somewhat different first post.
I got a strange message that my IP address has been permanently banned from this forum, something about a spam from Congo. I am living in Finland and this is my first post ever. Those bloody scums from Congo seem to be able to use others IP addresses. Everything is possible in the computer world of today.
I am a refugee from LATOC, I posted maybe 150 times in about 5 years so I don’t post much, lazy.
I am so far lucky that we have everything we need around us here and I am old enough to remember when we lived a life without oil, everything was by horse or hand, electricity was just for lighting and a radio. That means that I also remember how hard the life was, but maybe in a way luckier, people visited each other much more before TV come.

I have been jumping around since the demise of LATOC. I wish I hadn't found so many good sites. I could spend all day reading and there is just no time for that. Still, glad I found you.I'll bet I know a lot of posters.

Hi Kathy, any of the prepper family is welcome.

Maybe you can breath a little life into the Planning forum...

Hm.. you could probably say on average each post has 50 words (lots of short posts but gobs of loooong ones). So that would work out to about 371 books.

It's like a Finnish hot tub in here.
Is Finland the country where the High School students did the strip tease on stage for the teachers at graduation, or was that Denmark?

Heh, that's pretty vague description. Do you remember where specifically you saw those trees?

I'm just going to make a wild guess. There's many lime trees in Helsinki, so maybe you are talking about those. Google search for "puistolehmus".

EDIT: It seems to be called "basswood" or "linden" in US english.

Maybe...it seemed like they were the dominant species in every park, yard, and growing wild on the roadside in the form of large bushes with multiple trunks or medium trees. It was one of those species so ubiquitous that most people would ignore them entirely or just call them a "tree" since they were so common as to not even need a specific name.

Welcome! While my ancestors aren't Finnish (They're Estonian), it's nice to see a few folks whose ancestors spoke (or speak) finno-ugric languages on the board.

Must be willow trees, they are very common. There's some 20 different species of willows in Finland, some of them growing in large bushes such as you described. Smaller bushy species bloom late in the winter before the snow has melted and before there's leaves in any plants. In Finland that's considered as a first sign of coming spring.
