Times are tough all over but we have enough traffic without spam, thanks anyway.

Sheesh, seems like people selling / promoting something are the only ones joining the forum anymore.

Or am I just a fuddy-duddy, and self-promotion is the whole point of "social media?"

Alexa tells me we are the 21st most popular website in Wanganui.

So all you Wangers stand up and take a bow!

How many people log on to this site now? Some days it seems like only 6 or 7 people.

Usually around 300 people an hour - mostly guests.

PO.com is a hobby, 300 people/hour is about all our server can handle. I clicked on this thread about 5 times in the last hour and it took me this long to get a page - 350 connections the last hour, the server probably had to reset...

I bet we could draw 5-10 or who knows how many times that regularly with a better server/connection.

Ah well.

On that subject, there appears to be a big problem with the software. It's not normal that this software falls over at that level of use. There may be something in the customisations that is causing the problem. If the powers that be want, I could do some load testing on a local copy to see what is causing the problem.
What we think, we become.

Oil in language- Newbie here

Unread postby RachL88 » Wed 06 Oct 2010, 12:07:45

If the 'Long Emergency' comes to exist how, and will language change?
And will censorship concerning the oil crisis come into play?

Just a question.. thought it might be an interesting point.

Hi Rach:

Great question.

1. Its quite possible that the "Long Emergency" has already started, with the $147 bbl/oil we saw in 2008 playing a big role in triggering the credit crisis and the subsequent global economic collapse that we are in now.

2. Censorship concerning the oil crisis may already be in play. While the financial media (Forbes etc.) are covering peak oil, it still isn't covered much in the mainstream media. 8)

I sometimes wonder at the public policy debate about climate change but not PO.

CC it's certainly a "cataclysmic" theory which could have negative economic consequences either in being addressed or being left unaddressed, just like peak oil.
Was it just Gore pumping CC that made it the mainstream topic or is the fact that many of the "solutions" are similar for both problems and but the ramifications of warming seemed easier to swallow somehow?

Did tptb just chose to work CC and let those efforts somehow deter PO by coincidence?

Or am I trying to give them more credit than they deserve and CC is just a Democratic bone to the environmentalists?

The primary institutions that monitor "supposedly" world oil reserves like CERA and the EIA are expected to provide the population with factual information and projections. Yet somehow all their rosy glowing reports just don't jive with reality...

Probably a form of Censorship that the government supports.... give the public less than the whole truth.

And its been going on since that little problem of the embargo in the 70's...

In answer to Plantagenet..

I can't believe I hadn't already thought of this..thanks for pointing out that we are more advanced that I naively expected.

It's hard to understand why not everyone can see the damage facing our planet, but I guess that's because we're not all told about it.

Welcome to Peak Oil dot com, I am sure if you rephrase your query so that more of us understand what you are asking you will get a more useful answer.
