Just thought I would introduce myself. I am based in the South of England. My background is in Engineering and I have always had an interest in energy, economics and climate science.

I have been reading this site for some time, as well as The Oildrum before it closed down. I am always impressed by knowledge of many of the regular contributors and often learn something new. I hope to contribute to some of the discussions in a small way.

PS: Are you by any chance related to Saint Gordianus or the Roman Emperor Gordianus or perhaps to the Roman dectective Gordianus?

I understand you are having a spot of weather there right now. How are you doing?

We had a nasty storm in the early hours of yesterday morning, which crossed the south of England, then went on to Belgium and the Netherlands. It was accurately forecast a few days ahead of time, so everyone was prepared, and of course the media (being largely based in London) went into a bit of a frenzy.

It was roughly a once-in-five year event and caused quite a bit of disruption to air and rail travel, as well as power cuts in some areas. There were also four fatalities caused mainly by falling trees. There was concern that it would be as severe as the Great Storm of 1987, but in reality it was much less severe. I expect everthing will be back to normal by this afternoon.

I love the south of England. I've spent some time in Surrey, Bucks, London, on down to Brighton. Many of my favorite people are from those places. It's a marvelous part of the world (full of free thinkers who are much more politically adept than your average US citizen), almost a world of its own.
