Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

They will carry on until there are 100% taxes and all activity goes underground or abroad and there is no wealth to redistribute because anything what was there is either moved abroad, destroyed, hidden or consumed.

No, no. Its all about moving everyone from "there" to "here" because "here" we have unlimited resources and optimism and hope via American Exceptionalism. Whereas "there" has to deal with the forces of nature and physics and all that yucky stuff.

That is what they have done in my neck of the woods. All the major electricity cables have been buried. Before that there was just one time, when under a lot of political pressure, when the helicopters were out with the massive hanging chain saws.

Local lines are still above ground.

Since I bought this house about 14 years ago, the electricity supply has grown more stable, although the biggest recent problem was when a transformer burnt up. By Murphy's law, at the same time we had a mechanical digger go through the water supply lines as well  (the reason given was that the water lines had been laid over 100 metres from where the official maps showed them to be  ). All in all a good test for our short term preps.

California is going to have huge wildfires irregardless of whether or PG & E is operating. The climate is changing......the forests are drying out and the trees are dying. After the trees burn off we’ll see an expansion of dry land shrubs and grasslands that are in equilibrium with the new, hotter climate.

huh,... hope?!

ever consider hope is based upon WWJD or rather say about the current state of affairs,… in other words I would like to think that jesus would use the parable of the vineyard owner to illustrate poor stewardship of creation which is the cause of “climate change”

Msgr. Charles Pope wrote:...I would like to reflect on Sunday’s parable of the vineyard owner to see its application to our times. Here is a brief summary:
A landowner set forth a vineyard with great care and lavish attention. He then entrusted it to tenant farmers. At harvest time, he sought his share of the produce. Yet instead of giving the owner what was due him, the tenant farmers refused, ridiculing, beating, and even killing the servants sent to collect his share. They end by killing the landowner’s own son.

When Jesus asks his audience what they thought the owner would do in response, they replied that he would put the men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who would give him the produce at the proper time. Obviously, they did not realize that in the parable the Lord was actually describing them, and that such a judgment would be upon them unless they repented.

just thought I'd bring up the issue of WWJD, given

God and the earth: Evangelical take on climate change

Conservative Christians have long opposed climate science, saying human induced warming goes against God’s omnipotence.

...Why climate policy hinges on evangelical support

According to a 2015 Pew Research poll, more than a quarter of the US population identifies as evangelical or born-again Christian, people who generally interpret the bible literally and tend to be very socially conservative. Largely white and transdenominational, they're much more likely to be Republican than Democrat.

A different Pew poll in 2016 found that 81 percent of evangelicals and born-again Christians voted for President Donald Trump. Though, in large part, that trend could be attributed to his stance on abortion and gun control, he also used his campaign to tap into a long tradition of Republican antipathy to environmental issues.

just sayin seems all the ingredients are in place and ready to bake for a perfect storm (which I hope comes later rather than sooner)
Given the great chasm that divides believers
AND non-believers of “man made climate change”
let’s hope that people figure things out, before it’s too late!!!

On the other hand Trump is the one backing off from further military involvement.

Its time for California to bury all the power lines in the state. Underground power lines can't cause forest fires.

pge-underground-power-lines-cost

Sure it would cost a lot of money to bury the power lines, but it costs a lot more to burn up hundreds or even thousands of houses. California is rich....it can afford to bury the power lines. All it takes is the political will power to raise taxes and get it done.

They will need this money to fight rat infestation and typhoid epidemics and clear human feces out of city streets.
Also to address growing favelas next to skyscrappers and mental health issues of general population there.
May not be enough to bury powerlines.
It may also be the case that power lines are not such a major contributor to fires, despite of what we are being told.

That problem is easily solved. Just vote out the Ds and end the crazy liberal policies that facilitate people becoming drug addicts and living on the street at public expense. Criminalize and enforce bans on public intoxication, public use of bathrooms, and illegal overnight occupation of public space. Criminalize drug possession and drug use. Ultimately it will be cheaper to criminalize drug use and homelessness again rather then subsidizing it.

I agree with you 100% on that. The ultimate cause of the forest fires is global warming......but the Ds in California can't deal with it. They are OK with passing legislation to do something 30 years in the future, but the problem is here and the forests are burning now......and they are unwilling to take the steps that are necessary to address their own problems.

This has NOT been a partisan issue until NOW. Other than Trump twittering nonsense, this has really little to do with politics BTW.

Of course the failure of the Ds in California to manage their state properly is political. The Ds are in total control of California, and they aren't doing a very good job there.

The Ds are literally turning California into an approximation of a third world country, with homeless drug addicts living on the streets, massive power outages, and one party rule that is more concerned about protecting drug users from being arrested then it is in protecting homeowners from having their homes consumed by fires.

Planetgenet, you probably only know of what's happening here from the news headlines. California is in a simultaneous ecological crisis and housing crisis, the latter because of unique economic reasons and the former due to climate change, of course. That's all there is to it, actually, but those are big issues in a big state. Right now, the wind is blowing like it never had before, and that is not due to a Democratic administration BTW.

Thats not true. I know California very very well. I lived in Berkeley for a while, and for years I've made an annual trip to the Bay Area to participate in the American Geophysical Union meeting. I've also done many other trips all over California....I was just in northern California last week, and I'll be in LA and San Diego early next year.

jedrider wrote:California is in a simultaneous ecological crisis and housing crisis, the latter because of unique economic reasons

There are no "unique economic reasons" in California. There are just uniquely bad policies adopted by the Ds who run California. For instance, in most other states it is illegal to poop on the street or to publicly use heroin or other drugs, or to set up your tent in a public park or on the sidewalk and take up residence there. The liberal Ds in California have decided not to enforce these kinds of laws, and the result is there are massive numbers of drug users passed out on the streets of San Francisco, many of them in the Soma area around the Moscone Center where the AGU convention occurs. The police just ignore them. There are hundreds and thousands of people camped in SF city parks and on side walks....rather then citing them and removing their tents the liberal Ds facilitate it. And then the liberal Ds ignore EPA regulations about polluting waterways and allow raw human escrement and needles to flood into city sewers and into SF Bay.

For heaven's sake....that isn't "unique." Its disgusting and dangerous and illegal and the liberal policies of the Ds that have created this situation need to be changed.

jedrider wrote: Right now, the wind is blowing like it never had before, and that is not due to a Democratic administration BTW.

Of course not....but the pathetic response of Gov. Newsome and other D politicians to the problems created by global change is consistent with the failure of the Ds to tackle many problems during the decades long domination of California politics by the D party. Right now Gov. Newsome keeps blasting PG&E like its their fault the climate is changing. There are things that the state should be doing immediately in response to climate change.....california faces a need to take steps to ameliorate the risk from forest fire and to start pulling back from the coasts which will be affected by climate change. Cutting extensive fire breaks in the forests to stop the spread of forest fires, for instance, should be done immediately. Here where I live in Alaska an huge fire break was cut just outside of town about 20 years ago....this last summer we had a major forest fire that threatened to destroy my little town....but the fire break was used to stop the fire and it held and saved our town.

California is a glorious state....its just been cursed with one party rule for the last several decades.

Cheers!

Anyway, the Kincade Mandatory Evacuation Area is huge and so, we hope that it doesn't burn that entire area. Yeah, we are going to need to huddle together and build a huge fire break around us. It's going to be a lot of displaced people (if that's what we have to do). People will just go back and rebuild however, but it appears that it's all going to burn eventually. (I say we, but I'm in the bay area and safe for now, but our turn may come, too.)
