Water scarcity is inevitable, up to 270 million people at risk

Water scarcity is inevitable, up to 270 million people at risk thumbnail

Even if the world reduces its population to seven billion by 2100, reduces inequalities, carries out effective land-use regulation, limits intensive consumption of resources and adopts environmentally-friendly technologies and lifestyles, the planet will still face water scarcity.

That is the conclusion reached in the final draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change, Desertification, Land Degradation, Sustainable Land Management, Food Security, and Greenhouse gas fluxes in Terrestrial Ecosystems.

The draft, under embargo, was accessed by Down To Earth. It will be discussed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) member countries at the meeting of IPCC in Geneva from August 2 to August 6.

All assessed future socio-economic pathways (SSP) result in increases in water demand and water scarcity, says the report.

The IPCC writes its reports based on five standard SSPs. These are projections based on world population, income distribution, resource consumption and land use for the year 2100.

For instance, SSP1 includes a peak and decline in population (~7 billion in 2100), high income and reduced inequalities, effective land-use regulation, less resource intensive consumption, including food produced in low-greenhouse gas emission systems and lower food waste, free trade and environmental-friendly technologies and lifestyles.

The SSP3 includes high population (~13 billion in 2100), low income and continued inequalities, material-intensive consumption, barriers to trade, and slow rates of technological change. SSP3 has high challenges to mitigation and to adaptation.

“What the report says is that water scarcity is now unavoidable across projections, even with extremely cautious management of population or resource,” a climate change expert told DTE.

The report which primarily looks at climate change’s impact on land, says that climate change-driven desertification will expose significant percentages of the population to water scarcity over the coming decades.

“The dryland population vulnerable to water stress, drought intensity and habitat degradation is projected to reach 178 million people by 2050 at 1.5°C warming, increasing to 220 mln people at 2°C warming, and 270 mln people at 3°C warming,” indicates the report.

This would have serious implication for India, as about 228 mln hectares (69 per cent) of India’s total geographical area (about 328 mha) is under drylands.

All of this and more translates to Tel Aviv viewing Turkey’s large-scale integration into the F-35 stealth program as a serious long term threat to its security interests in the region.

The truth is that Turkey is quietly leaving the western alliance and since Israel rules the US and not the other way around, Turkey no longer gets the hardware with which it can threaten Israel. Because every Muslim wants to see its holy places in Palestine return to the Muslim world and Erdogan is quietly turning into an Islamist:

If Turkey and Iran team up, KSA and Israel are toast.

Fortunately, for the Israelis there is always the American fallback scenario. Upstate New York comes to mind.

Europe has 10,000 wide body planes, that are normally used to transport tourists to places where they don’t belong. They could be used to evacuate these poor 6.66 million Israelis to North-America in a matter of 6.66 million / (10,000 * 300) = 2 days.

Oh, and those 150 or so nuclear Jericho missiles, pointing at Europe, will be confiscated by Brussels, just to ensure no harm will be done with these firecrackers.

More good news for the adherents of a multi-polar world:

“New Turkey-Iran-Qatar axis is rising in Middle East, and it has Saudi Arabia furious”

The Israelis are getting nervous as well:

Iran sees Syria not only as a strategic outpost that will preserve Iran’s influence in Lebanon, but as a regional outpost to counterbalance Saudi Arabia’s ambitions. This outpost will open pathways for Iran into the Mediterranean and complement the alliances it has forged with Iraq and Turkey. This is viewed as a strategic threat not only to Israel and the United States, but to Russia as well.

Regarding the last sentence… I think that Russia would prefer a Middle-East run by Turkey and Iran, rather than run by the US.

    Realistic Brexit scenario:

By the end of October there is still no break in the deadlock.

EU says: pick May-deal or no-deal.
    BoJo: skip the backstop

Next the EU comes with a credible threat: either organize an election with Brexit at stake or we throw you out now.

    Election it will be.

“Could ‘Team Brexit’ do battle with the ‘Remainer Alliance’ in a snap election? Westminster braces for a summer of scheming as pro and anti-EU parties mull pacts for a looming poll”

What Farage is proposing to BoJo, namely dividing the British electoral map, see who has the most chance of winning (Tories or Brexit party) and next agree that either the Tory or Brexit party will participate in any single district… this strategy could be carried out by the Remain fraction as well.

Good recipe to divide the country even more.

The WISEST thing to do would be a soft Brexit, as a middle of the road compromise (May-deal). But you need wise people to do wise things.

Australia and the end of empire

Australia is getting scared of China and in 2017 has implemented a “Reset” in Australian-Chinese relations, diplomatically framed as:

“This is what Australia’s China reset is all about. It’s about sustaining the enormous benefits of engagement while managing the risks.”

Currently China is expanding its sphere of influence in the “near abroad”, not just the South-China Sea, but it is eying the islands in the Pacific as well.

There are a lot of Micronesian islands with only 3 million inhabitans. Closer by Australia is the large island of Papua New Guinea. CNN reports that there is real chance that China will achieve building a naval base on one or more of these islands. After all, the dollar talks and these islands are poor. Next CNN asks: what is China doing in the South-Pacific anyway? In 2017 Australia still outspended China in this region, but that is likely to change.

Last year, the Chinese approached the island of Vanatu for a military base:

Vanatu is very close to Australia, a vast and rather empty continent, that in the worst case could fullfil a role to China, what North-America fullfilled to Europe in the 19th-20th century, namely a convenient place to export excess population to. And just like the Europeans didn’t ask questions to the resident “Indians”, chances are that no questions will be asked to Australians either.

China blasting Australia for being to negative about port lease. Argument: Chinese think very positive about Australians, why aren’t you positive about us?

    [part 1]

“Australia must prepare for a Chinese military base in the Pacific”

“Government to assess regulation of Chinese influence at universities”

“China to replace the US as Australia’s leading research partner”

Australia will be like Pakistan, another country where China pushes out the US in order to take its place.

As early as 2014, Malcolm Fraser, a very senior Australian politician, warned for a potential Chinese take-over of Australia, in the wake of the US losing a standoff in the South-China Sea:

Now the lesser Gods are waking up. Australia was discovered by the Dutch in 1606, but had too few people to populate it. By 1770 the British did. After 1945, Australia became de facto part of the US empire. It is only a matter of time before the Chinese will be taking over.

And Here It Is: AOC’s Just-Resigned Chief Of Staff Under Federal Investigation
It looks like we have an answer for why Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief-of-staff abruptly resigned on Friday; he’s under federal investigation. According to the New York Post, Saikat Chakrabarti – the architect behind AOC’s meteoric rise from bartender to ball-buster, is being investigated in connection with two political action committees he founded. The two PACs being probed, Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats, were both set up by Chakrabarti to support progressive candidates across the country. But they funneled more than $1 million in political donations into two private companies that Chakrabarti also incorporated and controlled, according to Federal Election Commission filings and a complaint filed in March with the regulatory agency. In 2016 and 2017, the PACs raised about $3.3 million, mostly from small donors. A third of the cash was transferred to two private companies whose names are similar to one of the PACs — Brand New Congress LLC and Brand New Campaign LLC — federal campaign filings show. -New York Post As the Post notes, PACs are required to adhere to stringent disclosure rules, while the private companies Chakrabarti funneled money into are not. According to a complaint filed by Virginia government watchdog group – the National Legal and Policy Center, Chakrabarti’s LLCs appear to have been specifically designed to circumvent federal reporting requirements. As noted by the Washington Examiner in March: The cash transfers from the PACs — overseen by Saikat Chakrabarti, the freshman socialist Democrat’s chief of staff — run counter to her pledges to increase transparency and reduce the influence of “dark money” in politics. Chakrabarti’s companies appear to have been set up for the sole purpose of obscuring how the political donations were used. The arrangement skirted reporting requirements and may have violated the $5,000 limit on contributions from federal PACs to candidates, according to the complaint filed by the National Legal and Policy Center, a government watchdog group. -Washington Examiner According to the Post, “Federal authorities are looking at new salary rules imposed by Ocasio-Cortez when she took office earlier this year, and whether they were put in place to let Chakrabarti dodge public financial-disclosure rules, according to sources.” Interestingly, the Harvard-educated Chakrabarti agreed to take a massive pay cut this year – taking in just $80,000, while the average pay for his position is $146,830. With a salary below $126,000, he was not required to disclose his outside income. And now, he’s under federal investigation.
