Water scarcity is inevitable, up to 270 million people at risk

Water scarcity is inevitable, up to 270 million people at risk thumbnail

Even if the world reduces its population to seven billion by 2100, reduces inequalities, carries out effective land-use regulation, limits intensive consumption of resources and adopts environmentally-friendly technologies and lifestyles, the planet will still face water scarcity.

That is the conclusion reached in the final draft of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change, Desertification, Land Degradation, Sustainable Land Management, Food Security, and Greenhouse gas fluxes in Terrestrial Ecosystems.

The draft, under embargo, was accessed by Down To Earth. It will be discussed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) member countries at the meeting of IPCC in Geneva from August 2 to August 6.

All assessed future socio-economic pathways (SSP) result in increases in water demand and water scarcity, says the report.

The IPCC writes its reports based on five standard SSPs. These are projections based on world population, income distribution, resource consumption and land use for the year 2100.

For instance, SSP1 includes a peak and decline in population (~7 billion in 2100), high income and reduced inequalities, effective land-use regulation, less resource intensive consumption, including food produced in low-greenhouse gas emission systems and lower food waste, free trade and environmental-friendly technologies and lifestyles.

The SSP3 includes high population (~13 billion in 2100), low income and continued inequalities, material-intensive consumption, barriers to trade, and slow rates of technological change. SSP3 has high challenges to mitigation and to adaptation.

“What the report says is that water scarcity is now unavoidable across projections, even with extremely cautious management of population or resource,” a climate change expert told DTE.

The report which primarily looks at climate change’s impact on land, says that climate change-driven desertification will expose significant percentages of the population to water scarcity over the coming decades.

“The dryland population vulnerable to water stress, drought intensity and habitat degradation is projected to reach 178 million people by 2050 at 1.5°C warming, increasing to 220 mln people at 2°C warming, and 270 mln people at 3°C warming,” indicates the report.

This would have serious implication for India, as about 228 mln hectares (69 per cent) of India’s total geographical area (about 328 mha) is under drylands.

Water and climate will restrict food productivity growth in my opinion. Technology might delay a free fall but for the most part population is going to struggle to grow from here on out because of water and food productivity loses. The forecast of 10 to 11BIL population are being made with the assumption food productivity will rise and water problems will not be too severe. We are already seeing very severe water issues both too little and too much.

Water scarcity for 270 million by 2100.

Why is 2100 is most often used when projecting out into the future? Is it because most alive today will be gone by then so its safe to consider bad possibilities? And because most people even if they give lip service to having a soul don’t really believe it, so who cares, right? Only metaphysical people like myself think we’re all responsible for what we do to this planet by way of having to come back down in another body later.

It’s really fascinating how people want to make their mark usually in a good way, but don’t think anything exists afterwards. If nothing exists afterwards, why don’t more people go out on a bender wildly driving vehicles, shooting up the town? “All right, that’s it, I’m not coming back, and my time is at hand, so look out world, I’m going nuts!!!” No, most go softly into that goodnight ‘hoping’ something comes later.

I say projecting to 2100 is irresponsible, period. A law should be passed that makes it a crime to put off considering trouble that far into the future. The law should state, “No future projections as they pertain to the state of mankind’s environment to support existence, can look out any further than 30 years. In this case, 2049 would be the max. year.

Consequences of hard brexit. Europe loses, the rest of the world benefits

Hard Brexit? First see, then believe. BoJo got a beating yesterday, lost another seat and has a majority left of one vote in the Commons:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7312855/So-Boris-Bounce-Tories-lose-Brecon-election-setback-new-Prime-Minister.html

“So much for the Boris Bounce! Tories LOSE Brecon by-election to Lib Dems in the first setback for new Prime Minister Johnson as his Commons majority is cut to just ONE after record 60% turn-out”

The LibDems are currently THE Remain-in-Europe party. BoJo is apparently NOT seen as the deus-ex-machina that will lead Britain to a brighter future, or turn it into “The Greatest Country on Earth” (sic, quote BoJo).

Instead frightening signals are coming in about the country falling apart, major industries like Vauxhall, threatening to leave the UK. The GBP is falling against euro and dollar. The head of the central bank is warning for a recession as a consequence of a hard Brexit.

Unlike the UK, the EU knows what it wants and is able to develop a unisono stance and does indeed act, like what in the British press is patronizingly described as “The Bloc”. The BoJo-premiership has changed nothing, the country remains divided to the core. It is even possible that the EU will say by the end of October: “we either throw you out now or you do something that breaks the deadlock, meaning either a 2nd referendum or a general election with Brexit as the stake”.

The Brecon election indicates that it could be a very close call and indeed a potential victory for Remain (God forbid).

Poor British: they act like the Anglo-Saxon world still reigns supreme and that Britain can dictate the terms of the divorce.

It doesn’t. The Anglo world is falling apart.

The EU is now like the US and you are our private little Canada we can push around, if we like.

In hindsight, mrs May was entirely right. Her negotiated deal is the only Brexit Britain can ever hope to achieve. The poor, well-meaning and disciplined woman was pushed out of office because of the personal power-ambitions of major-league slime-balls like Boris “get-off-me” Johnson and Nigelle Fromage.

Now Boris, just sign, or we give you such a huge no-deal kick under your fat arse that you will “land” in the middle of the Atlantic and drown, so we can strip that “Global Britain” of yours of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, Vauxhall, British Airways, Shell, Unilever, etc., etc. and leave England to the mercy of the Muslims.

Take your pick, BoJo. The only way you can hope to remain PM is to think of a little cosmetic change to the Backstop, that doesn’t jeopardize the integrity of the Common Market, enabling you to sign without too much loss of face.

  19. Cloggie on Fri, 2nd Aug 2019 1:45 am

BoJo is holding on to power with merely one seat away from a vote of no confidence. That gives an enormous amount of power to those who hate no-deal Brexit to the core, et voila…

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7313413/Tory-MP-Phillip-Lee-threatens-WIPE-Boris-Johnsons-majority-defecting.html

“Tory MP threatens to WIPE OUT Boris Johnson’s majority by defecting to Lib Dems in protest at hard Brexit stance”

After Brecon, a no-deal Brexit has become a lot less likely, all of a sudden.

My personal fears have increased that the EU could be stuck with a saboteur in its midst, that will block the EU-army, keep anti-Russian sanctions in place and will try to maneuver Turkey into the EU. Britain is the Trojan Horse of ZOG-USA, the largest disaster in European history. Brexit and Trump offer a once-in-a-life time chance to get rid of them both and turn to Eurasia. Don’t waste it, Brussels.

  20. Cloggie on Fri, 2nd Aug 2019 1:52 am

LOL – the Tories and their current no-deal Brexit cabinet were sabotaged by the Brexit party. The “conservative” vote was split because of the party of Farage, dealing a huge blow to the aspirations of the BoJo-Farage comical duo:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7313013/Blow-Boris-Johnson-Brexit-Party-denies-Brecon-vote-win-despite-just-10-vote.html

Scroll down for the vote results:

“Disappointment for Nigel Farage as Brexit Party takes just 10 per cent of the vote in Brecon… but it IS enough to take the seat AWAY from the Tories and hand it to the Lib Dems”

You can’t make this stuff up!

But it also shows that in Brecon, (and probably in the country as well) Brexit is still a majority position, provided it comes with a deal.

    Just.Sign.

No worries. The average Venezuelan lost 11 kg, basically turning the country into one giant weight-watching program. Britain could benefit as well from it. Just close the curtains and watch Foyle’s War all day, that kosher brain-washing program, written by a (((Anthony Horowitz))), chock-full with WW2-lies, taylor-made for a country obsessed with its own past and false image thereof, just chosen to be the most popular series of the new century:

Here is the crucial 2nd episode and the most political one, showing that the British aristocracy (and thinking part of Britain) very well saw WW2 as a war for the jews:

    https://tinyurl.com/y5sonnlt Zero hedge

“While hysteria raged about possible Russian “interference” in the 2016 US election, British intelligence officials were secretly playing a “key role” in helping instigate investigations into Donald Trump, secret texts have shown. “Turns out it was Britain that was the foreign country interfering in American affairs,” former MP George Galloway told RT, speaking about the new revelations published by the Guardian about early British involvement in the ‘Russiagate’ investigation. The Guardian reported on texts between former deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe and Jeremy Fleming, his then counterpart at MI5, who now heads GCHQ. The two men met in 2016 to discuss “our strange situation” – an apparent reference to Russia’s alleged interference in US domestic politics. British intelligence “appears to have played a key role in the early stages,” the report said. Galloway told RT that the revelation was not surprising because people “already knew” that British intelligence had played a part in the Russia-related investigations in the US. He recalled that it was former British spy Christopher Steele who drew up the now-infamous Steele dossier, which made multiple unverifiable and salacious claims about Trump and has since been largely discredited. Britain is “up to its neck in the whole Russiagate affair,” he said.”

https://tinyurl.com/y5jkajzu Hans-Werner Sinn, op-ed via The Guardian via zero hedge

“In seeking to justify the ECB’s new phase of expansionary monetary policy, Draghi referred several times to the rapidly deteriorating situation in Europe’s manufacturing sector. He wants monetary policy to come to the aid of a more expansive fiscal policy needed to revitalise the European economy. Here, Draghi was probably mainly focusing on Germany, whose manufacturing sector has been in recession since the summer of 2018. And the ifo Business Climate Index, published on the same day that Draghi announced the ECB’s new policy, added to the pile of bad economic news. It appears that the years of plenty for German industry are probably over for now. Looming Brexit, the US president Donald Trump’s imminent impositionof tariffs on more European goods and the European Union’s new CO2directive (which will require electric cars to account for one-half or more of some carmakers’ output by 2030), are significantly increasing costs for German (and European) industry.”

“Europe needs structural policies that liberate market forces rather than continuing a policy of sustaining zombies and financing a new housing bubble and over-indebted government sectors with ever-cheaper credit…All this is adventurous enough. If the ECB now wants to go even further, Europe’s economic system could become weaker and less sustainable.”

“A severe drought that has caused water levels in Southeast Asia’s Mekong River to drop to their lowest in more than 100 years could have devastating consequences for fish, as well as the tens of millions of people living and working along the river, experts warn. Drought and upstream dams have shrunk the Mekong River to its lowest levels in a century and threaten fish spawning—bad signs for the region’s food supply. The crisis began when critical monsoon rains, which usually start in late May in the Mekong region, failed to arrive. Dry conditions, driven by the El Niño weather phenomenon and exacerbated by climate change, persisted well into July. At that time, observers say, the situation was made worse by hydropower dam operators upstream, in China and Laos, withholding water for their own purposes.”

“With the completion of more mainstream dams and the cumulative effects of climate change, that tipping point” for when the Mekong can no longer sustain these changes “may be coming closer,” says Brian Eyler, the Southeast Asia program director at the Stimson Center in Washington, D.C. Flood Pulse Originating in the Tibetan highlands, the Mekong River flows through six Asian countries, including China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, before emptying into the South China Sea. The river basin is home to the largest inland fishery in the world and more than 60 million people depend on it for their livelihoods.”

“With the global population projected to increase by nearly 3 billion people by midcentury, demand for food—as well as the land and energy required to produce it—is to set to soar. If the world doesn’t figure out ways to cultivate far more food on less land, we’ll need to convert nearly two Indias’ worth of forests, grasslands, and other ecosystems to agricultural fields…The report, issued by the World Bank and United Nations, found that global food needs will expand 50% overall by 2050, while demand for animal-based products like meat, milk, and eggs will swell by nearly 70%.”

“The innovations that could help achieve these aims include: Using genome editing tools like CRISPR to unlock traits that boost yields. Shifting to plant-based meat replacements like products from Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat. Applying nontoxic spray-on films and other technologies that can extend the shelf life of foods, such as those created by Apeel Sciences. (See “Reinventing rice for a world transformed by climate change.”) Switching to types of rice that reduce the level of methane production in paddies. Using compounds that prevent fertilizer from converting soil microbes into nitrous oxide, a highly potent greenhouse gas. Feeding supplements to livestock that can cut their methane emissions, such as a product developed by Dutch conglomerate DSM (see “Seaweed could make cows burp less methane and cut their carbon hoofprint”). Developing varieties of crops that absorb more nitrogen. Employing algae-based fish feeds that could ease pressure to use wild fish as feed for farmed fish. Using solar power to produce the hydrogen in nitrogen-based fertilizers. Relying more on high-yield varieties of oil palm trees, which produce a widely used oil that has helped drive deforestation.”

Though neither US nor Israeli officials have commented on the alleged lobbying campaign, it’s consistent with the fact that Israel has seen growing Russian-Turkish defense ties as a significant threat to both its anti-Iran policy and actions in Syria. And further, Ankara and Tel Aviv have a long history of clashing over Palestinian related issues. Last month the White House announced Turkey has been effectively booted from the F-35 program for procuring Russia’s S-400 anti-air defense system, further entrenching Moscow’s growing influence and security arc in the Middle East. Crucially, both Israel and Turkey were set to be the only countries outside the United States which possessed the advanced Lockheed-made fighter. But it appears Israel did its best to ensure it’d be the only one, as The Times of Israel noted: srael has agreed to purchase at least 50 F-35 fighter jets from the US defense contractor Lockheed Martin. So far, 16 aircraft have been delivered, and the remaining planes are slated to arrive batches of twos and threes until 2024. Israel is the second country after the US to receive the F-35 from Lockheed Martin and one of the few allowed to modify the state-of-the-art aircraft, known in Israel as the Adir. Compare this to the more than 100 Turkey was slated to receive at around $1.4 billion before the program was halted. The White House has long been on record as saying the American fighter jet program “cannot coexist with a Russian intelligence collection platform that will be used to learn about its advanced capabilities.” Aside from the more pressing issues of both Russian and Iranian entrenchment in Syria, and growing Russia-Turkey defense ties, Israel and Turkey also stand on opposite sides of the Kurdish question. While President Erdogan has lately reiterated plans to crush “outlawed” armed Kurdish groups in Syria and Iraq, Israeli military and intelligence has over the past couple of years been rumored to be active in training and supporting these very groups alongside its US ally. All of this and more translates to Tel Aviv viewing Turkey’s large-scale integration into the F-35 stealth program as a serious long term threat to its security interests in the region. “

“Berkeley Couple Support Their Children Aged 4 & 8 In Decision To ‘Transition’”

“It’s not child abuse – it’s being an accepting and loving parent. In a Daily Mail article published this week, Ben and Sara Kaplan, of Berkeley, Calif., explained why they allowed their two young children to transition at the ages of eight and four. The family is sharing its story in an attempt to “break the taboo” around trans children following studies that showed a rash of suicides among trans children who weren’t accepted by their families. Their two children, James, who transitioned from female to male, and Olivia, who transitioned from male to female, say that before the transition, they felt like they had “a piece missing.” But at the age of eight, James Kaplan, now 11, who was born a biological girl, realized he had to transition from female to male. And just a few years later a then-four-year-old Olivia Kaplan, now seven, who was born a biological boy, realized she wanted to transition from male to female. Their names at birth have not been revealed. The family are now sharing their story in the hopes of breaking the taboo around trans children, after statistics revealed an alarming number of suicide among young transgender people whose families are not supportive. Their parents were surprised when then-8-year-old James (whose birth name wasn’t published, along with the birth name of his sibling) came to them and expressed the desire to transition. They were even more surprised when their then-four-year-old son expressed a similar desire a couple of years later. But having just been through the transition process, they knew how to handle the transition process as parents. Though one thing they didn’t do: Question whether their extremely young child might simply been copying what their oldest child was doing.Even their oldest child felt “competitive” when he learned that his younger sibling wanted to transition. However, like with most siblings, he admits there was the usual competitiveness.”I reacted to Olivia transitioning like most older siblings would – even though I’m trans,” James explained. “I was a little confused at first and got a little defensive because I thought it was my thing.” “But after like a day of that, I saw that Olivia is a girl and she always will be.” For Olivia, having her big brother understand was key: “He was my first supporter and it made me feel very confident that I would have many more.” James, who is now 11, has begun taking hormone blockers to put off the onset of puberty and meunstration, which he said would be “distressing.” It will also prevent him from developing breasts. He’s also waiting to start taking testosterone, which would be the first non-reversible step in his transition. Though he’s already legally changed his name to James. Their youngest child won’t begin similarly irreversible steps in her transition for a few more years, but when the time comes, she will likely start with a hormone blocker. The parents also insisted that they “parent” their kids “for those who think we just follow our children around doing nothing.” The two parents insisted that they’re not ‘imposing an agenda’ on their children – they’re simply supporting their decisions to be who they truly are. Ben and Sara want to educate those who accuse them of imposing an agenda on their kids. “The reason that we chose to be public at this point is because having two transgender children is not that unique, but it’s very difficult to advocate for the second child without it looking like there’s a problem in the house,” Sara explained. “It looks like there is an agenda,” she said. “Like the mother is sick, and that’s not the case here.” Instead, the parents insisted that they were “on the right side of history.” They say their research has “proven” that they are doing the right thing.
“We are on the right side of history and we are not going to allow our kids to feel shame or fear based on other people – they deserve to feel loved and accepted.” “We are going about this because we are listening to our children and because we are doing a lot of research, which has proven we are doing the right thing,” Ben added. But if that’s true, how come so many readers are skeptical?

When I was a boy of 12, my next door neighbor of 16 asked my folks for permission for us to go camping. My parents agreed without a moments hesitation since Johnny was an Eagle Scout and, as Mom would say, he looked as beautiful as an angel. While camping, Johnny dropped his drawers and asked me to perform fellatio. Thinking this was a new game, I did as requested. It never happened again. The point being, homosexual acts are far more common then people imagine, and, no, it did not “scar” me for life nor affect me in the slightest.”

    About Water:

    Take Pakistan, please.

With glaciers melting at an excellerated pace, most resources are aimed at flood management.
    (not water storage, conservation)

WHEN, not if, those glaciers do melt completley, what then?

There will be someone in the trump camp talking about the china deal 90% done Monday or Tuesday
No doubt, someone in the Fat Boys administration, one of the psychopaths, is going to be lying– a bonus point for the Trump and the gang.
