The Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Shifting, Poles May Flip: “This Could Get Bad”

“The shield that protects the Earth from solar radiation is under attack from within. We can’t prevent it, but we ought to prepare…” is the ominous sub-headline of a worrisome new report that shows scientists around the world fearing that the earth’s magnetic field is shifting, with potentially disastrous consequences for mankind.

“When next the poles change places, the consequences for the electrical and electronic infrastructure that runs civilization will be dire. The question is when that will happen.”

As’s Mac Slavo notes, scientists from the University of Colorado in Boulder are sounding the alarm that the Earth’s magnetic poles are showing signs of reversing. Although the pole reversal, in and of itself, isn’t unprecedented, the solar winds that would take out the power grid and make parts of the globe uninhabitable could cause widespread disasters.

The Earth has a fierce molten core that generates a magnetic field capable of defending our planet against devastating solar winds.  This magnetic field is vital to life on Earth and has weakened by 15 percent over the last 200 years. This protective field acts as a shield against harmful solar radiation and extends thousands of miles into space and its magnetism affects everything from global communication to power grids.

Historically, Earth’s North and South magnetic poles have flipped every 200,000 or 300,000 years. However, the last flip was about 780,000 years ago, meaning our planet is well overdue.  The latest satellite data, from the European Space Agency’s Swarm trio which monitors the Earth’s magnetic field, suggest a pole flip may be imminent.  The satellites allow researchers to study changes building at the Earth’s core, where the magnetic field is generated. Their observations suggest molten iron and nickel are draining the energy out of the Earth’s core near where the magnetic field is generated. While scientists aren’t sure why exactly this happens, they describe it as a “restless activity” that suggests the magnetic field is preparing to flip.

The signs of the Earth’s poles reversing are also apparent to Daniel Baker, who says this would devastate the power grid.  If a switch happens, we would likely be exposed to solar winds capable of punching holes into the ozone layer. In a new report, Baker, who is the director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, claims if this reversal happens, it is likely to render some areas of the planet “uninhabitable” by knocking out power grids.

Baker’s comments were made in an in-depth Undark report written by Alanna Mitchell, who has a new book about the topic titled “The Spinning Magnet: The Electromagnetic Force that Created the Modern World and Could Destroy It.”

“The dangers: devastating streams of particles from the sun, galactic cosmic rays, and enhanced ultraviolet B rays from a radiation-damaged ozone layer, to name just a few of the invisible forces that could harm or kill living creatures,” Michelle writes.

“This is serious business,” Richard Holme, Professor of Earth, Ocean, and Ecological Sciences at Liverpool University told MailOnline.

“Imagine for a moment your electrical power supply was knocked out for a few months – very little works without electricity these days.”

“No lights. No computers. No cellphones. Even flushing a toilet or filling a car’s gas tank would be impossible. And that’s just for starters.”

Researchers predict that in the event of a flip, every year a hundred thousand people would die from the increased levels of space radiation. Radiation at ground level would increase so much that some estimates suggest overall exposure to cosmic radiation would double causing more deaths from cancer. “Radiation could be 3-5 times greater than that from the man-made ozone holes. Furthermore, the ozone holes would be larger and longer-lived,” said D. Colin Forsyth from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at UCL.

“2012: Magnetic Pole Reversal Happens All The (Geologic) Time”

“Scientists understand that Earth’s magnetic field has flipped its polarity many times over the millennia. In other words, if you were alive about 800,000 years ago, and facing what we call north with a magnetic compass in your hand, the needle would point to ‘south.’… Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years”

Yes, It does occur and field scientists were able to locate rock formations with reverse polarity. Public television on Nova had a segment on it a long, long time ago, I believe.
It would cause a mess of headaches for our infrastructure. Hope it doesn’t until I’m pushing up daisies.

This is FUD. The pole flip will take thousands of years. It will cause confusion and force us to protect ourselves from UV radiation maybe a 1000 years from now. Even then the effects are not a bad as they want you to believe.

It’s not preparing to flip…It is flipping as we speak. It’s just real slow.

Solar flares, EMP strikes, Anonymous Hackers, hurricanes, tornadoes, random lighting strikes, squirrels and now polar shifts all threaten the grid. One thing is absolutely certain. The grid is the Achilles Heel of civilization. Those of us who have had it go down for a week or two know it for a fact.

The last time I read a hysteria piece on the poles flipping it included at the end (in small print) that it would likely take a 1000 years to happen. Pretty sure we will have hardened the grid by the time it becomes an issue.

Gaia could be flipping us off.

    Zerohedge … nuff said.

jawagord: But to disclose the thousand year timescale would sell less doomer newsletters, and outfits like zerohedge wouldn’t bother to reprint.

in 1000 years if 99% of power is green and almost every house is on solar / battery backup or wind / power backup, etc. it might not even matter much for the grid.

As for the medical issues, they’ll be dealing with climate change too, so there’s that. People might need to live in underground houses, etc.

Whether this story is true or not, it is the type of story that hammers in how temporary and fragile our lives are on this Earth

Some of us learn at a young age that these types of posts routinely circulate. The ETP doom crash fits in this category that unfortunately people buy into. This site is a great example of a huge diversity of opinion with wild claims on many topics. Here at even hate is celebrated. As I hang out with all these heathens I feel like a missionary that has lost his way. Lol

Fook are you dumb boatietard. As simple-minded, bible-thumping, thumb-sucking moron as you are ever going to find. Go read your bible, then park your retard ass in front the TV and catch some 700 club.

As for losing your way, boatietard. Did you lose your way to your trailers bathroom again? Grab a fresh diaper, and leave a trail of crayons next time, all pointing away from the TV, and in the general direction of the crapper. Don’t want you losing your ‘way’ again, retard.

Yes it is good Boat, to be exposed to a diversity of opinions and beliefs and not submit to what any particular person or institution or creed tells you or even your own preferences. Even hate has a legitimate reason to exist. It is the close minded person who in my experience, is the truly ignorant one.

Lets try brainwash with you. Listen to,….son of a preacher man… dusty springfield. You need some religion to heal your heathen soul.

The expectation of the timing of the earth’s magnetic reversing is overly simplified. Most important the data needed to build a reasonable model has just begun being measured. As the link below points out: “Bottom line: ESA’s Swarm satellite trio has been busy measuring and untangling Earth’s different magnetic signals in order to gauge our world’s magnetic heartbeat.”

And the reversal phenomenon was discovered when magnetic surveys were run east/west across the Atlantic’s sea floor. A pattern of north/south “stripes” of alternating magnetic poles were mapped. As the seafloor emerged from the Mid Atlantic Ridge as the upwelling magma solidified it locked in the pole orientation at that time:

“These polarity reversals are therefore recorded in the rocks forming at the Mid Atlantic Ridge every time the Earth’s magnetism changes from a normal field (as it is today) to a reversed field (as it was about 0.78 million years ago). When these variations in the magnetic rocks are mapped on the ocean bed they are seen to line up in a series of alternating “magnetic stripes”, rather like barcodes.

The significance of the magnetic stripes was only revealed when their ages were discovered from dating magnetic reversals in volcanic rocks accessible on land. The dates revealed that the Atlantic Ocean was opening by seafloor spreading from the Mid Atlantic Ridge at a rate of about 0.02 metres per year. This means that North America and Europe are moving away from each other at about the rate it takes for your fingernails to grow.”

The complications: the spreading rate is not uniform every where along the Ridge and as the link at the beginning shows the earth’s magnetic field is not as simple as north vs south.

The pole shift hypothesis was the back bone of the movie 2012! LOL

  17. Mad Kat on Sat, 3rd Feb 2018 5:42 pm

This is not the first time I have heard about pole flip. And, yes it is happening, but no one knows if it can happen suddenly at some point.

If it does, the effects will pretty much destroy our civilization. For one example. GPS will be worthless. “No lights. No computers. No cellphones. Even flushing a toilet or filling a car’s gas tank would be impossible. And that’s just for starters.”

“New satellite data from the ESA shows that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening 10 times faster than we previously thought … previous geological records suggested that a geomagnetic reversal occurs over thousands of years. Now, however, a new study has analyzed rocks from the previous flip and found that the process completed in under 100 years.” (2014)

“… The magnetic field began weakening in 1600. … Earth’s magnetic field was weakening 5% per century, but now is weakening 5% per decade. … As of 2014 the magnetic field is continuing to weaken rapidly.b… Magnetic reversals lead to extinction events. ….” (2014)

Wars, climate change, and now a pole flip. As if humanity did not have enough ways to become extinct. We definitely live in exciting/interesting times.

  18. DerHundistlos on Sat, 3rd Feb 2018 10:39 pm

It finally happened on January 23, 2018. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared the eastern puma officially extinct, removing it from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.

And a big thanks to all you Republicons for your unwavering efforts to repeal and relegate to the trash bin of history the job-killing Endangered Species Act. Fortunately, Republicons have vowed to eliminate the act prior to the end of President Dump’s first term.

I have no doubt there’s a special place in the afterworld reserved for you. I can’t think of more deserving people.

God bless you and God bless the USA.

Mad Kat – “Now, however, a new study has analyzed rocks from the previous flip — the Matuyama-Brunhes magnetic reversal of 786,000 years ago — and found that the process completed in under 100 years. [doi: 10.1093/gji/ggu287]” I read the link and if done properly the methodology appears valid.

Given the implication the study should be given the highest priority by our govt IMHO. It should take very little peer review (less then 6 months) to determine the validity of the less then 100 year time span. The method used is very simple and should be very easy to replicate.
