Earth isn’t dying because of the actions of the individual. Blame corporations, not people.
Our ecosystem has been greatly disrupted by pollution, over-hunting and abuse of resources. Climate change, gas emission and pollution are planetary-scale threats and, as such, require planetary-scale reforms that can only be implemented by the world’s governments. Individuals can, at most, be responsible for their own behavior, but governments have the ruling power to implement legislation that compels industries and individuals to act sustainably.
According to a new report published by The Carbon Majors Report, 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988.
In addition to the role of big corporations, according to a 2015 report by the charity Oxfam, someone in the wealthiest top 1% globally emits, on average, 175 times more carbon than someone in the poorest 10%. The poorest half of the world’s population—almost 4 billion people—is responsible for only 10% of emissions.
Although the power of consumers is strong, it pales in comparison to that of international corporations, and only governments have the power to keep these interests in check.
Plastic pollution, found in every corner of the globe including in the deepest trenches of the ocean, is the most visible disruption—and one of the grossest examples—of how corporations have externalized the costs of their profit-making activities. Products are packaged for maximum profitability. And once they’re sold and profits are collected, corporations disappear claiming no accountability, leaving ordinary citizens to take on the burden of proper disposal and to endure the consequences of toxic plastic pollution.
According to Life 123, in the United States, 70% of people between the ages of 18 and 30 participate in recycling. It is believed that 81% of adults older than 30 participate in some type of recycling. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people are picking up plastic litter in an effort to stem the tide of pollution, but with thousands of factories around the world continuing to churn out goods by the millions—wrapped in plastic sachets and bottles that last forever but are meant to be used only once and then thrown away. The task is neverending.
The problem isn’t because of consumer choice, but because people have very limited choices.
Greta Thunberg, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who inspired the global “school strike for climate” movement, was invited to speak at the annual World Economic Forum, a meeting of business leaders and celebrities held in Davos, Switzerland.
“Some people say that the climate crisis is something that we [all] have created,” Thunberg said. “But that is not true, because if everyone is guilty, then no one is to blame. And someone is to blame.”
“Some people, some companies, some decision makers in particular have known exactly what priceless values they have been sacrificing to continue making unimaginable amounts of money. And I think many of you here today belong to that group of people.”
This narrative that blames the average individual is harmful and misguided. It diverts attention away from the actions of big business and the rich and onto those who both pollute the least and have the least power to do anything about it.
The individual shouldn’t neglect their responsibility in keeping our planet healthy. Tasks such as recycling, using reusable materials, decreasing your meat intake and being more mindful of your carbon footprint are all actions that should remain in the forefront of one’s mind. But it’s unfair to blame the majority of citizens who abide by the standards set by not only corporations but the government.
It didn’t take the actions of one but the actions of many. The call to action that alerts us of our planet having anywhere between 12 to 100 years or as little as 17 months left ends in a call to inaction. Warning millions and ignoring those in power is merely a planetary crisis marketed in true capitalist fashion.
Blaming the individual only works in favor of those who cause the greatest disruption.

Blame? Going to the roots of the human predicament nobody is to blame. We got here by being human. We did what was natural. We embraced technology and narratives that allowed power and affluence. It was a result of competition among ourselves and nature. Life’s impulse of evolution, succession, and also extinction is our collective condition. We just pretend they aren’t. Pretend? That is the better word than blame. We have honest science and pretend science. We have pretend journalism and politics too. Mix these up and add some time and you have a potent mix of unreality. Sure, there are those people and nations that cause the greatest disruption. China and the US come to mind. The rest of the world is close behind. This is rich and poor because poor would be like the rich if they could. Corporations and their leaders are responsible for huge disruption through market-based capitalism. Yet, don’t think for a moment you can change this very much without lots of people suffering and also dying.
Globalism is market based with the basics of comparative advantage, economies of scale, global transport, free-ish movement of knowledge and capital with the goal of profit. That allowed 7BIL people. Take that away and I seriously doubt we will have 7BIl people. Profit produces affluences but it is a two-edge sword. Naked profit also destroys through corruption and planetary destruction. We have the normal individuals who want to be affluent and comfortable. These individuals want security. This seems fair but the problem is the degree. Today the affluence of the normal individual has taken for granted modern life and its scaling problem. Our climate protesters want to point fingers at the rich CEO’s and especially those involved in oil but they are not going to call into question the basics of modernity. They are not going to ask people to go back to the land with limited mobility, access to energy, and consumables. They are not going to tell people to work longer hours producing basic staples like some of the poorer parts of the world. They are going to tell you these poorer parts of the world should live modern too. They think sustainable development will lead to global harmony.
Our scientist and academics are pretty honest about the problems. It is the solutions where they get corrupted. This is not entirely their fault because society does not want to hear the truth of our predicament. They want technological hope. They want easy solutions. If we recycle and embrace renewables in a Green New Deal then we will solve these problems. What we have today is a people that are also unprepared to make the kind of decisions necessary. We only have a small amount of people that have the proper education to understand the issues. We then have a percentage of the educated that are only concerned about their advancement. This bleads into business and politics and we end up with the promotion of policy and investment that benefits a few at the expense of the many. The planet is the last on the list. This is all circular because the cause and effect become intertwined. This is a trap and there are no way out. Trapped? That should be the starting point but it will never get to that.
The unsustainable will end. Human overshoot will correct itself. There is no trap in nature. Nature is circular but the nature of this circular is physics. That will break the trap but the costs will be large. The cost will not only be physical but also the very fabric of our meaning will be destroyed. We are all to blame and none of us. The best we can do is take steps to mitigate and adapt. The effort of mitigation and adaptation is even limited because the system is set from hundreds of years of adaptation to growth and increased technological affluence. You can’t just pull the plug on that and expect to survive.
The individual does have choices within this trap. It is the smarter and those who embrace the meaning of being trapped combined with honesty that can position themselves. The individual can make his life more durable and thereby find more sustainability and resilience. You can’t transcend this problem. There are no refuges but there is strength in meaning. Get out of the blame game. Stop your protests at least at the level of believing a system change can make it all better. If you really care then embrace less. Drive less, eat less, and have less things. Do not put people like Elon Musk on a pedestal. Do simple things like grow or gather your own food. I would say do this in a relative way based upon what life you live in. I am speaking to those who are capable of understanding what I just wrote. Many are no up to the science. Many don’t possess the capacity to think at these levels. There are those who are purely out for their own advancement. Be one of the few and awakened who care about the planet, people, and yourself and take a step to change what you can and accept what can’t be changed. It doesn’t get any better than that. Don’t make it worse. It will end and end badly but it does not have to end tomorrow.
