What Can We Learn From Peak Whale Oil?

Consumption

The energy industry is based on what was once thought of as an inexhaustible natural resource, but over-exploitation and a growing reliance on oil has made extraction more and more costly and difficult as previously abundant areas have run dry. What’s more, in the areas where this natural resource has been depleted, what’s left behind is environmental devastation. We have reached peak oil–peak whale oil, that is. The year is 1846.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, sperm whale oil, known as spermaceti–which is extracted from the heads of sperm whales–became an invaluable source of lamp oil, as its smokeless flame made it an ideal fuel source, which in turn made it a commodity with high value and high demand. The whaling industry responded in kind, by massively ramping up their production and quickly driving sperm whales bear to extinction.

As reported by Gizmodo in their article “1846: The Year We Hit Peak Sperm Whale Oil,” the craze spread rapidly on both sides of the Atlantic. “Sperm whales were hunted mercilessly in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. A single, large sperm whale could hold as much [as] three tons of sperm oil, making them an incredibly valuable commodity — and in fact, they became the first of any animal or mineral oil to achieve commercial viability.

“And like any new innovation, consumption habits quickly followed suit. Americans and Europeans started using sperm whale oil to fuel lighthouses, street lamps, and public buildings. Wealthier folks stopped using home-made tallow candles, preferring the more hi-tech alternative. The spermaceti candle became so prevalent that it created a new light standard: the lumen.”

Sperm whaling spread rapidly off the east coast of the United States in the 1760s and 1770s, “moving from the east coast of the American colonies to the Gulf Stream, the Grand Banks, West Africa, the Azores, and the South Atlantic,” ramping up most critically between the years of 1770 and 1775 as whaling became a huge industry in  Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, which together “produced 45,000 barrels of sperm oil in each of those years.” The success of the U.S. whaling industry soon caught the attention of European interests as well, with the French particularly keen to cash in on the endeavor.

Whales quickly became critically overfished in the Atlantic, pushing whaling enterprises further and further into faraway, colder waters and to hunt smaller and smaller whales. “The intense whale hunting drove the number of sperm whales down appreciably. It’s estimated that nearly 236,000 whales were killed in the 19th century alone,” reports Gizmodo. Negative externalities of the rapidly expanding whale oil industry were widespread and almost immediate in a textbook case of the tragedy of the commons, with seas turning into grizzly bloodbaths described by Gizmodo as a “showcase of terrors,” an epidemic of “whale widows,” and sharp increases in the price of whale oil as demand continued to grow and whale stocks were fished nearly into extinction and “whalers, after plundering the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, were having to chase smaller whales in colder and more extreme waters, while having to utilize bigger ships over longer periods of time.” In 1846 the industry reached a breaking point, culminating in what we now know was the moment that the world reached peak whale oil.

Even after demand shrank, however, whales almost certainly would have been fished into complete extinction as long as there was any profit margin–albeit a shrinking one–to be made. But whales were saved at the last moment by an unexpected and unrelated innovation. Gizmodo writes: “the industry peaked at this time for another reason — and it had nothing to do with what was happening on the oceans. Rather, it was the invention of a new fuel source, one that, quite literally, saved the whales.” This fuel source was kerosene, the petroleum product that started it all, initiating the petroleum industry in the United States that was later revolutionized by John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil.

So what can peak whale oil teach us about the modern day oil industry? The question is extremely relevant, considering the fact that peak oil has been in the news all week in the wake of Saudi Aramco’s record-breaking initial public offering. As part of the IPO, the world’s largest oil company released a prospectus including projections that oil demand will continue to grow until 2035, but that peak oil may occur even sooner, in the 2020s. On top of this, at least according to Bloomberg’s Liam Denning in his opinion piece “Brazil’s Oil Flop Is a Warning for Majors and Aramco,” Brazil’s recently lackluster sale of oil deposits–their biggest ever–was another knell for impending death of the oil industry, remarking that the sale’s failure indicated “expectations on the part of many investors that oil has entered its twilight years.”

Peak oil is an inevitability, but the timing exactly when it occurs will have major implications for the global economy as well as the globe itself. As the scientist community and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have consistently asserted, the majority of the world’s proven oil reserves will have to remain in the ground if the global community has any chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change and keeping the world from warming more than 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial average temperatures as stipulated by the Paris climate agreement. Denning argues that this fact itself could be one of the factors making peak oil approach even faster than previously projected. “Climate change concerns and impacts could reduce global demand for hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based products and could cause the Company to incur costs or invest additional capital.”

It’s unequivocally true that the issue of peak oil is arising not from an issue of scarcity, but because of a projected peak in oil demand. As Bloomberg reports, “The peak oil that’s talked about today is quite different from the concept that emerged in the 1950s, when M. King Hubbert, a Royal Dutch Shell Plc geologist, predicted that U.S. oil production would crest in the 1970s and the world would physically run out of oil.” It’s not just Saudi Aramco that is predicting that peak oil is just around the corner–although their admission of this fact is particularly salient. The International Energy Agency has also predicted that oil consumption will plateau in approximately 2030 “amid the use of more efficient car engines and electric vehicles,” as paraphrased by Bloomberg. “Renewable energy is taking off, electric companies are switching to cleaner-burning natural gas, and the cost of solar power has fallen 50% in a decade. That’s upending the business model of utilities, which were designed to deliver fossil-fuel energy from large power plants to homes and businesses.”

So what is the lesson from peak whale oil? It’s that innovation and new technologies are the key. We have to accept that both oil and oil demand are finite, and the peak is just around the corner. The question is what industry will fill that vacuum. Solar and wind are already major contenders and the sectors are seeing massive growth, along with a boom in the energy storage industry, which will potentially allow these variable energy production methods to be stable and viable replacements for fossil fuels. Then there are those that suggest nuclear fission is the answer. There is also geothermal, the world’s cleanest energy, which is already being developed with unprecedented vigor in countries like Japan and the United States. And then there are those new clean energy alternatives that are still in development but closer to reality than ever, like the clean energy holy grail of nuclear fusion. On, some, or all of these could be the key to the future of energy. The only certainty is that the future of energy will not be in oil.

Why does your organization steadfastly refuse to report the contrary scientific findings regarding alleged human-induced climate change?
The Foolish Idea of “Settled” Science
The Main Stream Media trumpets (almost endlessly) that the science regarding climate change is “settled” as evidenced by 97% of climatologists who have reached a “consensus” about anthropogenic (human-induced) global warming. What the press does not stress is that this like-mindedness among these experts is based almost entirely upon computer simulations (GCMs or climate models) and not on any significant experimental data or evidence. Even more distressing is that many (most?) climate advocates see the current scientific findings as fixed and they reject out of hand any actual contrary research results. Like it or not science is simply never settled.
Any historian of science will quickly belie the unsound position regarding “settled” science. A few solid examples should suffice to dismiss this misbegotten belief. During the late 19th century the entire scientific community accepted as fact the necessary existence of a “luminiferous ether” through which photons from the Sun traveled to reach the Earth. Then in 1887 Michelson & Morley of Case Western Reserve conducted a single experiment that showed that no such “ether” existed. Thus, all the prior evidence and belief was discarded. [Note: Interestingly, it was M&M’s research that set Einstein on his search concerning relativity.] The bottom line is that the 97% “consensus” concerning the “settled” science regarding the existence of a luminiferous ether was wrong.
Next, at the turn of the 20th century, virtually every cosmologist and astronomer agreed that the stars and galaxies that made up our universe were fixed in position. Then in 1930, Edwin Hubble by studying the “redshift” of the light reaching Earth from these heavenly bodies showed that our universe was expanding and that it was doing so at an accelerating rate. Once again, all of the “settled” science was placed in the trash bin of history.
Another excellent example is “continental drift”. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, virtually every scientific expert insisted that the position of the Earth’s continents was fixed. This scientific conclusion was based upon the observation that although granite existed on the continents, the seafloor was composed of denser basalt, and the “settled” science during the first half of the twentieth century was that there were two types of crust, named”sial” (continental type crust) and “sima” (oceanic type crust). Furthermore, it was “accepted” by all researchers that a static shell was present under the continents. Then in 1947, a team of scientists using an array of instruments confirmed the existence of a rise in the central Atlantic Ocean and found that the floor of the seabed beneath the layer of sediments consisted of basalt, not the granite which is the main constituent of continents. They also found that the oceanic crust was much thinner than continental crust. All these new findings put the “settled” science into question.
Subsequently, beginning in the 1950s, scientists using instruments that measure attraction (magnetometers) began recognizing odd “striping” across the ocean floor. After the maps with this “zebra pattern” of magnetic bands were published, the connection between seafloor spreading and this layout was correctly linked to the historic evidence of geomagnetic reversals. Like it or not, the seven continents had been moving. Again, the 97% “consensus” regarding the “settled” science of fixed continents had to be discarded. In science, the idea of a “settled consensus” is simply silly. Science is constantly uncovering new truths.
The Concept of “Settled” Science Regarding Anthropogenic (human-induced) climate change has recently been falsified
In 2014, a group of Chinese researchers found evidence suggesting that the current warm phase of a 500-year cycle could terminate over several decades, ushering in a 250-year cool phase. Then on July 3, 2019, Science Daily announced that new evidence suggests that high-energy particles from space known as galactic cosmic rays affect the Earth’s climate by increasing cloud cover, causing an “umbrella effect.” When galactic cosmic rays increased during the Earth’s last geomagnetic reversal transition 780,000 years ago, the umbrella effect of low-cloud cover led to high atmospheric pressure in Siberia, causing the East Asian winter monsoon to become stronger. This is evidence that galactic cosmic rays influence changes in the Earth’s climate. “The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has discussed the impact of cloud cover on climate in their evaluations, but this phenomenon has never been considered in climate predictions due to the insufficient physical understanding of it,” stated lead Japanese investigator, Professor Hyodo. “This study provides an opportunity to rethink the impact of clouds on climate. When galactic cosmic rays increase, so do low clouds, and when cosmic rays decrease clouds do as well, so climate warming may be caused by an opposite-umbrella effect. The umbrella effect caused by galactic cosmic rays is important when thinking about current global warming as well as the warm period of the medieval era.”
On August 9, 2019, Prof. Nir Shaviv wrote an article in which he stated that the (sea level) data suggests that rising CO2 levels play only a minor role in Earth’s climate compared to the influence of the Sun and cosmic radiation. “Climate change has existed forever and is unlikely to go away. But CO2 emissions don’t play a major role. Periodic solar activity does.” Prof. Shaviv continued “… science is not a democracy. Even if 100% of scientists believe something, one person with good evidence can still be right.”
Subsequently, on Aug. 11, 2019, it was reported that a new study had found winters in northern China have been warming since 4,000 BC. The study found that winds from Arctic Siberia have been growing weaker, the conifer tree line has been retreating north, and there has been a steady rise in biodiversity in a general warming trend that continues today. It appears to have little to do with the increase in greenhouse gases which began with the industrial revolution, according to the researchers. Lead scientist Dr. Wu Jing, from the Key Laboratory of Cenozoic Geology and Environment at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said the study had found no evidence of human influence on northern China’s warming winters. “Driving forces include the sun, the atmosphere, and its interaction with the ocean,” Wu said. “We have detected no evidence of human influence.”
Then the web site, Bioengineer.org, on Nov. 6, 2019, cited three papers from the Federal University of Sao Paolo, Brazil which partially affirm the studies from Japan and China. This research insists that “The composition (of marine) sediments carried by rivers from the mainland to the ocean can be used as a basis for calculating variables such as temperature, precipitation, and marine salinity. In the context of ongoing global climate change, the study of the past is fundamental to validating the accuracy of the climate models used to make predictions.”
    SUMMARY
The world-famous philosopher of science, Karl Popper, insisted that to be a valid scientific theory must be falsifiable. This includes the widely held conjecture of anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change. In short, a single set of scholarly findings that is not explained by the premise of man-made global warming which is attributable to the burning of fossil fuels can falsify this entire body of scientific speculation and this has now occurred. Today, six peer-reviewed scientific papers that were conducted by six separate groups of expert investigators from five different universities in four separate countries and which have all been published in eminent peer-reviewed scholarly journals have found little or no evidence to support the assertion regarding human-induced climate change. Instead, all six groups independently found that the warming that has happened was almost entirely attributable to galactic cosmic rays that affect the quantity of the Earth’s low hanging clouds. These expert investigators call this canopy or blanket the “umbrella effect”. The bottom line is that the entire climate change hysteria has now been falsified and is untrue. These six experimental results have shown that the IPCC and its computer simulation models (GCMs) are not valid.

I didnt see anything in todays Daily Mail about purple frogs in Manchester Duncan. Can you provide a link? It sounds worrying, and I would like to know if the purple frogs are remainers or are they supporters of a hard, or soft Brexit? The last thing we need right now is the distraction of anti-Brexit purple frogs consuming major urban areas, even depressing dumps like Manchester. I would know, I lived there for many years until the marxist city council condemned the place I was living in as un-inhabitle. Which is saying something when you look at the city in its entirety.

“The Solidarity Of Democrats’ Delusion Is About To Collapse”
    https://tinyurl.com/ve2xnoo kunstler

“From this point forward, the facts of the actual story — many of them already in the public record, one way or another, and sedulously ignored by the news media — will be officially detailed by federal authorities outside the orbit of the coupsters, and finally beyond the coupsters’ control. The facts may include the uncomfortable truth that Mr. Mueller and his helpers were major players in the bad-faith exercises of the Intel Community against the occupant of the White House. I’m not so sure that the Resistance can keep up the fight, since their enemy is reality as much as reality’s mere personification in Mr. Trump. The violent opposition Schopenhauer spoke of in his three-stage model was just procedural in this case, moving through the courts and committees and other organs of the state. I don’t think the Left can bring the fight to the streets. They don’t have it in them, not even the ANTIFA corps. The hard truths of perfidy and treachery in the upper ranks of government will rain down in the weeks ahead, and when they do, there’s an excellent chance that they will be greeted as self-evident. The Times, the WashPo and the cable news networks will have no choice but to report it all. My guess is that they will display a kind of breathlessly naïve wonder that such things are so. Most remarkably, they might just assert that they knew it all along — a final twitch of bad faith as the new paradigm locks into place. I expect that we will see something else happen along with that: a loud repudiation of the Democratic Party itself, a recognition that it betrayed the mental health of the nation in its lawless and demented inquisitions. I expect that sentiment will extend to the party’s current crop of candidates for the White House, to the delusional proposals they push, and perhaps even to the larger ethos of the Wokester religion that has programmatically tried to destroy the common culture of this country — especially the idea that we have a duty to be on the side of truth.”

Davy, I know how much it upsets you when I question your judgement. But why do we have a 3000 watt solar system for our 400 sq foot cabin? Isn’t that overkill? Wouldn’t it be more real Green if we just insulated it? BTW. The goat bifurcated in the kitchen again. Thought you might like to know.

  46. makati1 on Fri, 29th Nov 2019 7:37 pm

MOB, “The US needs to help them to spread democracy to China!” why would they want to do that? Even the US is not a democracy. Never was. Never will be. It is the lie they tell when they want to prevent democracy from happening in a country that will not kiss the US’ ass. Like Russia, Venezuela, Iran, China, etc. Amerika is the world’s #1 hypocrite country by far. Democracy? Bullshit!

All the signs of a failed empire are becoming blaringly obvious in the US. A huge neon sign for the world to see. The US is run by the Jews. The sham show in DC is for the dumbed down ‘folks’, nothing more. The real decisions are made by those who do not need to be elected. They already own the country and all you tax slaves on the “plantation”. You just don’t recognize your “massahs”. LOL
