There will be an oil shortage in the 2020s, Goldman Sachs says

An oil shortage is coming says Goldman Sachs, because firms cannot fully invest in future production.

Global oil majors are increasingly looking to invest in lower-carbon areas of the energy sector, as they react to pressure for cleaner energy, both from government policy and investors.

“In the 2020’s we are going to have a clear physical shortage of oil because nobody is allowed to fully invest in future oil production,” Michele Della Vigna, Head of EMEA Natural Resources Research at Goldman Sachs told CNBC Friday.

“The low carbon transition will come through higher, not lower oil prices,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.”

Della Vigna said “Big Oils” are starting to understand that if they want to be widely owned by investors, they need to show that they are serious about minimizing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

Goldman Sachs: “Big Oil” must diversify away from crude

Goldman Sachs: ‘Big Oil’ must diversify away from crude

The Goldman analyst said oil firms only had to look at the steep derating of coal companies over the last 5 years to understand the shift in investor sentiment.

Della Vigna said until a transition to full renewables is made, the interim battle will be to own a greater market share of gas-based power. The analyst said with a huge capital cost of gas infrastructure, big state-backed companies looked best placed.

“We talk about the new seven sisters emerging, dominating the global oil and gas market because nobody else can finance these mega-projects,” he said.

The “new Seven Sisters” of oil are considered the most influential firms from countries outside the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

They have been identified as Saudi Aramco, Russia’s Gazprom, NIOC of Iran, China National Petroleum Corp, Brazil’s Petrobras, Venezuela’s PDVSA, and Petronas of Malaysia. The original “Seven Sisters” were firms in the 1950s who would later consolidate to become BP, Chevron, Shell, Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell.

Della Vigna said European oil companies such as U.K. firm Shell and French company Total are also ahead of U.S. rivals in making the transition from “big oil” to become “big energy”.

Oil markets have been weak in recent days as oversupply concerns and fears of an economic slowdown have pressured prices. Both Brent and WTI contracts entered bear markets this week as prices fell around 20 percent from their most recent highs in October.

“Following the latest standoff, in which neither party is willing to compromise, the spread between the 10Y Italian BTPs and German bunds widened past 300 basis points on Monday, and once again moving closer to the feared “red line” of 400bps, which many worry could kick-start a dangerous negative feedback loop that could push the Italian banking system toward a crisis.”

“And with nothing fixed in Italy (or the UK for that matter), contagion concerns once again emerged, hitting the common currency as the EURUSD breached 1.1300 to the downside, the lowest print since July 2017. As the euro slid to its weakest level in 18 months, analysts said concerns about the showdown with Italy were eclipsing fears about a “no deal” Brexit to become the most important factor weighing on the currency.”

“Understanding The Global Recession Of 2019”
    https://tinyurl.com/yahrw2md

The success of these policies has created a dangerous confidence that they’ll work in the next global recession, currently scheduled for 2019. But policies follow the S-Curve of expansion, maturity and decline just like the rest of human endeavor: the next time around, these policies will be doing more of what’s failed. The global economy has changed. Demand has been brought forward for a decade, effectively draining the pool of future demand. Unprecedented asset purchases, low rates of interest and unlimited liquidity have inflated gargantuan credit / asset bubbles around the world, the so-called everything bubble as most asset classes are now correlated to central bank policies rather than to the fundamentals of the real-world economy. Keenly aware that they’ve thinned their policy options and financial buffers to near-zero, central banks are struggling to normalize their policies by raising rates, reducing their balance sheets by selling assets and tightening lending conditions / liquidity.

“As soon as authorities attempt to limit their support / stimulus, markets wobble into instability. The entire economic structure of “wealth” is now dependent on asset bubbles never popping, for any serious decline in asset valuations will bankrupt pension funds, insurers, local governments, zombie companies and overleveraged households–every entity which is only solvent as long as asset bubbles expand or maintain current valuations. So how do central banks normalize their unprecedented policies without popping the asset bubbles they’ve created? The short answer is: they can’t.Rising interest rates are a boon to savers and Kryptonite to borrowers–especially over-leveraged borrowers who must roll over short-term debt and borrow more just to maintain the illusion of solvency.”

“The central bank “solution” to bidless markets is to become the buyer of last resort: when no sane investor will buy bonds, stocks or real estate, then the central bank starts buying everything in sight. We are already seeing this in action as Chinese governmental agencies have started quietly buying empty flats in ghost buildings to prop up the housing market. The idea here is to restore confidence with a relatively modest burst of quiet buying. But when markets turn and confidence is lost, sentiment can’t be restored so easily: sensing their last chance is at hand, sellers dump assets at a quickening pace, overwhelming the modest central bank buying. This leaves the central bank with a stark and sobering choice: either let the asset bubble collapse and accept the immense destruction of “wealth,” or buy the whole darn market.”

Many of the big U.S. companies – including supermajors Exxon and Chevron – boosted their Permian oil production in the third quarter as they have firm capacity commitments and integrate Permian production with downstream operations. Many smaller drillers, however, are going on a ‘frac holiday’—as Carrizo Oil & Gas said in its Q3 earnings release this week—in some of their Permian acreage by the end of this year, to sit out the worst of the pipeline constraints, and to be ready to return to completions next year. The majority of company executives and industry analysts expect that the Permian bottlenecks and the wide WTI Midland to Cushing price differential are transitory issues that will go away by the end of 2019, when many of the new pipelines out of the Permian will have started operations.”

Global oil demand will never peak for the simple reason that there will never be a post-oil era throughout the 21st century and probably far beyond. Even a wider usage of electric vehicles (EVs) into the global transport system will not change that outlook. However, it can decelerate the rate at which global oil demand is growing but will never replace oil as the major transport fuel nor lead to a peak oil demand.

The projection by the IEA that there could be some 300 million EVs on the roads by 2040 is just a myth. Still, let’s assume hypothetically that it is possible.

Global oil consumption has already hit 100 mbd in 2018 and is projected to reach 120 mbd by 2040.

Currently, electric and hybrid cars combined number under 2 million cars out of 1.477 billion internal combustion engines (ICEs) on the roads worldwide, or a negligible 0.14%. This is despite support by significant government subsidies. The total number of ICEs is projected to reach 2.79 bn by 2040 according to US Research.

Let us assume hypothetically that we might have some 300 million EVs on the roads by 2040. By that time the world will be using 43.8 billion barrels a year (bb) of which 75% or 32.85 bb will be used to power 2.790 billion ICEs around the world. Bringing 300 EVs on the roads will reduce the global oil demand by only 3.53 bb (9.57 mbd) or 8% to 100.43 mbd by 2040.

However, I hasten to add that even 300 million EVs by 2040 is an impossibility. The reason is that current manufacturing capacity of EVs amounts to only 500,000. So it will take many decades to manufacture 300 million EVs.

Moreover, there will be a need for trillions of dollars of investment to expand the global electricity generation capacity in order to accommodate the extra electricity needed to recharge 300 million EVs.

Last but not least is that projections and figures offered by the IEA and masqueraded as research have been discredited time and again.

…and will. And Russia and China are smiling from the sidelines. Macron, a Gaullist, not a Rothschildt puppet after all, what many, including me, initially feared.

With Brexit underway (it could still become a hard one) the old post-1945 order melts away like snow in the sun.

“Global oil demand will never peak for the simple reason that there will never be a post-oil era throughout the 21st century and probably far beyond”

LOL. The low-iq mobster fool all of a sudden abandons his peak-oil 2020 meme, he has been pushing for months and predicts that oil demand and supply will grow until 2100 and beyond, quoting some camel jockey one-trick-pony with nothing but oil to sell.

MOB, consider the source of your ref. CNBC, a major propaganda outlet for TPTB. Not reputable. Do you have any refs from outside the US MSM Iron Curtain?

BTW: The US has no missiles or systems that can take down Russia’s newest. You are supporting a worn out, antique military.

“We need to capture Iran to get their oil reserves..”

Yeah, we need to capture Germany, Europe, British empire, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Ukraine and now Iran.

Forget it. You will get the entire world against you. The Russian department of Europe defeated you already in Syria. That tastes like more.

WW3: Eurasia vs Anglosphere. It’s coming. Are you ready?

If US white nationalists say what they want to do, the first map will materialize.

If US whites remain seated on their BMI-30 *sses, Mobster and his kosher crew will at least keep their hold onto Anglosphere and turn it into a neo-USSR-of-color, a complete nightmare for whites:

“Growing demand for oil will lead to shortage and high prices in 2020s”

Poor MOB he has totally invested himself in a PO collapse and now his world is crumbling. He is unemployed and running out of money. He is waiting on the world to come apart so his sick fantasy of killing whites and breeding their daughters can be indulged in. Personally I think the asswipe is a wimp that would be killed in short order by his stupidity. In the meantime the global economy is declining and demand is weakening. This means high prices and supply shortages may again be postponed for years depending on if there is an economic recovery.

“The only ones who “Will Be Squeezed ‘Until the Pips Squeak’”… is white America…”
Whites are doing fine in the US. Yes, life is hard for many but the same is true across the world including Euroland. Whites are in decline relatively to other races but this is healthy. The strong will survive and this means the strongest of all races. All races offer talent and skills that gives this country the strength diversity offers. In Euroland on the other hand assimilation is not happening so what is occurring is ghettos that are much worse than inner-city America because they have continuity and strength. Inner-city America with the poor blacks have no continuity. They can be easily controlled and generally kill themselves in turf wars. In Euroland on the other hand these nonnatives are taking control of segments of the urban landscape. There are multiple areas that are de-facto no-go areas. The US has always had assimilation tensions since the very beginning. We are used to it. It is now to the point where we need to close the borders to uncontrolled migration. We have started that process. Those who are here are welcome to make a life and contribute as peoples have always done.

“Macron, a Gaullist, not a Rothschildt puppet after all, what many, including me, initially feared.”
Macron is a goofy pervert parading as a world leader. He is every unpopular and achieve little since he entered office except talk. He is definitely a Rothschild puppet serving their purpose of status quo.

More of billy’s military genius. billy, do you realize that this system has not even been put into service. It is in production but it is far from proven. It takes years to perfect extreme systems like this. I would wait before you boast about unproven weapon system.
