Earth Overshoot Day came on July 29 this year.

As Statista’s Katharina Buchholz notes, this is only the second time the day, which marks the time at which humanity has used up its allotment of natural planetary resources for the year, occurred in the month of July. It had occurred in August between 2010 and 2017.

The day, whose existence is highlighted by the NGO Global Footprint Network, means that all humans on Earth for this year have already used up more natural resources than mother nature can reproduce annually. Emissions, but also of resources like wood or fish and the use of land for crops, are among the things counted in when calculating Earth Overshoot Day.

Industrialized nations have the biggest share in pushing its date forward, as seen in the organization’s country profiles. The U.S. is the biggest offender.

If all nations lived like U.S. residents, the resources of five Earths would be needed each year in order for the natural environment to regenerate. The U.S. overshoot day is therefore on March 15.

Australia, which had been ahead of the U.S. for some years, now had its overshoot day on March 31, with 4.1 “Earths” used annually.

India was among the countries whose style of living would use up less than a whole Earth each year if practiced globally, which also has to do with poverty still being widespread in the country.

    There is no excuse for the failure of the American dream mentality that resulted in the perceived American exceptionalism that drove market-based capitalism to achieve the Pax American Empire. That said, finger pointing at the US with its pockets of 3rd world but also the many extremely green and planet loving people is intellectually low IQ. The world is now global with free capital flow for the wealthy of all nationalities. Asian middle class are as good or better than the American version and as big they just don’t fit nicely into one nation for criticism. Europeans are probably at the top of living REAL rich and like our Swiss “Hello” says Euros have out sourced a significant amount of their foot print. The reality is rich Euros are as dirty as rich everywhere. I do admire the European effort at low carbon but it is a shallow effort at best. No European in their right mind would follow this effort fully to its end because it means deindustrialization and going back to the days when a lot of the continent was really poor. This article says nothing about China that is the largest natural resource consumer and dedicated to a dirty Belt and Road initiative that is clearly their desire for a Chinese Empire disguised as pro sustainable development. We don’t need more of what the Chinese are building. As for India it is clear they are stripping the subcontinent bare of water resources at a time when climate changing weather patterns are exposing them to drought and floods. Nothing good will come of this. They may look good with per capita analysis but the cumulative effect is horrendous. In a nut shell no people look good these days because most all people have been delocalized. If a people could rapidly get rich, they will. It is not a matter of one people better than the other it is a case that humans as a group are fundamentally flawed and taking the earth down with their failures.

The pound has been over-valued for years thanks to being slaved to the euro-zone. President Trump knows this and this is why he backs Brexit as well as both Johnson and Nigel Farage. It’s also why Trump is going after France for its new taxes on U.S. tech firms. The wine tariff is political cover. Trump is attacking the French side of the brewing war for control of the EU. France’s President Emmanuel Macron, while ignoring the rising potential for domestic revolution via the Gilet Jaunes, has positioned himself as the de facto leader of the EU as Angela Merkel’s political power wanes. And Brexit is the key to this. Macron wants to punish Britain for Brexit. He’d rather a no-deal than any concessions. Merkel will countenance a deal rather than lose the U.K. completely. Mike Shedlock is right, the EU is complacent now about a No-Deal but panic will soon set in. No-Deal Brexit is very much on the table. Would Macron allow a no-deal to hurt rival Germany since Germany’s trade deficit with the U.K. is more important to them than France? I think so. Johnson would be happy to sit down with Trump and cut a free-trade deal yesterday. But being in the EU forbids this. And it’s France that is the biggest obstacle, regardless, just as it was for any EU/US trade deal…Johnson’s initial calls with EU leadership left things exactly as they are. It’s clear they hate him. It’s also clear the EU still thinks its agents in British parliament can block Johnson’s plans to exit without a deal on October 31st. Those people are now the EU’s best hope, but they don’t have many if any tools left if Johnson is serious about October 31st. A pending election won’t stop Brexit. The government won’t allow a revocation of Article 50. If it were possible Theresa May would have done it. All they have is delay and attrition. The road, however, looks like a dead end. Johnson, for his part, is smart in using the Irish backstop as his wedge issue. He’s turning it around on the EU who used it as a cudgel wielded by Theresa May earlier this year to bludgeon Tories, including both Johnson and prominent Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg, into voting for the deal as the threat to Brexit looked existential. Johnson and Rees-Mogg both paid politically for this vote and will continue to do so. While the opinion polls have moved their way in this past week, the situation between the Tories and the Brexit Party is still very fluid. Johnson knows this. Brussels knows this. And if their planned sabotage of Brexit fails over the next ninety-plus days, the markets will finally come to terms with it. Farage has played this smartly, as I pointed out last week, handing Johnson the talking points he needs to consolidate power after he delivers Brexit. If Johnson is serious about bringing about a post-EU golden age for the U.K. then he would be taking Farage up on his offer of help to deliver wins in the Labour-heavy Midlands where Brexit did so well in the EU elections in May. That’s the way things look like right now. Johnson is creating an environment for a post-Brexit general election to consolidate power, destroy the Tory Remainers and crush the resurgent Liberal Democrats who have become the single-issue Remain party. But he can, only with Farage’s help, take control of the Midlands, England’s version of “Les Deplorables” for a generation. That’s the thing markets will have to come to terms with. The EU will then have to stop distracting itself with trifles and turn back to the reality that it is a club that fewer and fewer want to be a part of. Just wait until the markets figure that out.”
