Rethinking Malthus

Rethinking Malthus thumbnail

Of history’s great thinkers, the one most relevant to farmers and ranchers is probably the English demographer Thomas Robert Malthus. He’s famous for doubting that farmers could increase food production fast enough to feed a rapidly rising population. He thought the resulting food shortages would beget famines, diseases and wars, which would eventually reduce population back to sustainable levels.

A lot has happened since Malthus first published “An Essay on the Principle of Population” in 1798 and much of it undermines his thesis. When Malthus wrote, 800 million people called planet earth home. Today 7.7 billion do. Most have enough to eat. Hunger has not been eliminated, to be sure, but that’s arguably a distribution problem. Farmers produce enough to feed everyone, or close to enough; the world just doesn’t get the food to everyone who needs it.

During the 15 years I’ve been inflicting my opinions on DTN readers, I’ve more than once taken a swipe at Malthus, or, to be more precise, at those who continue to advocate his theory, the neo-Malthusians. As recently as last February, I headlined a post, “Do Calls for Radical Diet Changes Repeat the Malthusian Mistake?” (

)

I don’t apologize for this. I continue to think the neo-Malthusians underestimate the power of technology to keep up with the rapidly increasing demand for food, energy and other essentials of life. Nonetheless, I have come to a more nuanced view of Malthus thanks to a Teaching Company course titled “Big History: The Big Bang, Life on Earth and the Rise of Humanity.” (

)

As a history major, I took a lot of history courses during my four years in Ann Arbor 50 years ago — but never one quite like this. “Big History” is multidisciplinary. The lecturer, David Christian, is a historian but what he’s teaching blends astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, anthropology, archaeology and economics with traditional history. And talk about Big! The course begins with the universe’s beginning 13 billion years ago and covers everything since in 48 lectures.

Christian changed my view of Malthus by the way he defined historical periods. What he calls the Agrarian Era began roughly 10,000 years ago with the rise of agriculture and ended in 1700. One of this period’s key characteristics, Christian says, was the slow pace of technological change.

Because it was slow, the era was marked by repeated Malthusian cycles, which Christian defines as “Long cycles of economic, demographic, cultural and even political expansion, generally followed by periods of crisis; warfare; and demographic, cultural and political decline. These cycles, generally lasting several centuries, are apparent throughout the Agrarian era and were probably generated by the fact that, though there was innovation (which produced the upward swings), rates of innovation could not keep pace with rates of growth (which explains the eventual crashes).”

Christian backs this contention with population statistics showing a very long-term uptrend during the Agrarian Era but lots of crashes along the way.

By contrast, the distinguishing feature of Christian’s Modern Era, the time since 1700, has been a sharp acceleration in the pace of innovation. According to Christian, between 1900 and 2000 world population quadrupled but global grain production rose by five times and global industrial output by 40 times.

By Christian’s definition of the historical periods, Malthus was actually right as far as the Agrarian Era was concerned. What he failed to foresee was that in the Modern Era, which was just getting started when he wrote, the pace of technological innovation was accelerating. Not only accelerating, but accelerating so quickly that food supply would be able to keep up with population growth from 800 million to 7.7 billion.

Malthus did not live to see the sharp increase in the pace of technological innovation that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. You have to wonder if he would have concocted his gloomy theory had he lived a century later.

It is possible, to be sure, that however fast the pace of innovation, population growth might yet eventually outpace it. This is why the neo-Malthusians haven’t conceded the debate.

When the Big History course hit the market in 2008, the world’s population was 6 billion something. It’s already risen to 7.7 billion and some demographers think it will be 10 billion in 2050. Not only is population rising, but incomes are rising in China, India and other developing countries, generating demand for not only more food but more goods of all kinds.

“Each of the more than 6 billion humans on Earth today consumes approximately 60 times as much energy as humans of the Paleolithic era,” Christian writes. “These figures suggest that the total energy consumption of our species has increased by about 60,000 times in 10,000 years.”

To Christian, then, there’s a “real threat” of a Malthusian crisis in our future. But there’s also increasing awareness of the dangers and some encouraging trends. Population growth rates are actually slowing. Ecological awareness is increasing.

“And of course,” he writes, “we should not forget ‘collective learning.’ The collective brain of modern humanity, magnified by billions of networked computers, is the most powerful problem-solving entity we know of. If there’s a solution to the problems that face us and the biosphere, 6 billion networked humans are surely likely to find it.”

“William Rees has challenged us to accept his “realistic facts” that renewable energy can’t end the climate crisis, and green energy is no substitute for fossil fuels. The only solution he sees is a deliberate contraction, but since “That’s not going to happen!” we face the possibility of global societal collapse. He argues in The Tyee that hundreds of millions of people must be persuaded “to risk wrecking their comfortable lives” to stave off the climate crisis…Andrew Nikiforuk backs up Rees’s argument, arguing that the radical reduction in fossil fuel consumption needed to tackle the climate emergency “will radically change our economy and de-energize our way of life,” and “we must contemplate an energy descent for which our civilization doesn’t have an ethos or a vocabulary.” Rees and Nikiforuk call this “realism,” but that’s a very loaded word. It says, “These are the facts: you can’t argue with them.” “Be realistic” invariably means “Stop being ambitious.” This kind of realism, applied to the climate and ecological emergencies, sends the message that we’re screwed…Rees is right with the data that wind and solar are only keeping up with the increasing global demand, and that the use of climate-disastrous fossil fuels is still increasing. I don’t dispute the need for a rapid acceleration of renewables, coupled with a rapid, regulated phase-out for coal, gas and oil. We need to switch from being “realistic,” implying the need to accept defeat, to being ambitious, bringing a determination to do whatever it takes. We need to stop spreading the fear that the energy descent needed to tackle the climate emergency will wreck people’s comfortable lives, or that it is something “for which our civilization doesn’t have an ethos or a vocabulary.” Tell that to the Copenhageners.”

  5. REAL Green on Tue, 26th Nov 2019 7:38 am

This is a good article to highlight the hybrid nature of REAL Green. In this article we see the tension between a green realist and an ambitious green. A green realist argues we need to accept science and facts that point to failure. Renewables are not solving the carbon trap and path dependencies. They are only mitigating it. An ambitious green that I often call a FAKE Green believes in doing whatever it takes and offer examples that are usually special cases and cherry picked of where strong transformations can occur. Their moto is “failure is not an option” but the failure is the moto itself because it does not start with honesty of our existential situation.

A green realist and a ambitious green are only covering part of the issue because they are focusing on techno solutions. They often do not include in the debate economic decline. They are focused on climate and not adding to that planetary decline in ecosystems and the web of life. The green realist does accept the fact that people’s comfortable lives will be wrecked. That point of view should be adapted though because how comfortable are modern lives that are often empty and sad in consumerism and inactivity of the digital world, we live in. The ambitious green talks about optimism and doing whatever it takes. REAL Green is fine with this but stresses this type of attitude must come from acceptance of failure first. This failure is acceptance of the carbon trap we are in and goes even deeper with the systematic path dependencies of society itself. These path dependencies are at all levels from the very top down to the individual. Path dependency means society does not have an effective plan nor the education to change so it won’t happen. This is a trap not a puzzle.

This does not mean we cannot be optimistic and ambitious with our personal and local lives. This decline process has a time frame with a measure of degree with duration. This means degree and duration that are so important to a species survival in crisis might be less severe if we have ambitious greens doing what it takes. This is especially true in locals and small groups where seeds of change can be stored for the likelihood of an existential crisis. It is here where resilience and sustainable strategies will come into play. REAL Green takes both the realistic green and the ambitious green and combines them. It does this once acceptance is made that our status quo lives will be wrecked in a process and possibly rapidly depending on how unsustainably we are located. REAL Green’s approach is having Kubler Roth as the center of optimism and ambition. The reason for this is the honesty of this acceptance of failure is a spring board for the application of efforts and techno solutions that reflect the truth. A terminally ill individual will generally choose beneficial behavior if they are honest. The honesty of failure will naturally lead to spartan, stoic, and humble living which is what it will take to mitigate and adapt to wrecked status quo lives.

REAL Green says we are screwed but that is not where it ends. That is the start. This is where the ambitious green can offer optimism and ambitious effort of doing what it takes to mitigate and adapt to something that will be a process with measure. The key to REAL Green is ambition and realism and what is to be avoided is delusional FAKE Green which is just a green washed form of Brown DENIALISM. FAKE Greens make up the majority of greens today. Green today is about doing more of the same with clean and renewable but anyone who is honest with the science immediately sees this lie. REAL Green says you can be ambitious and optimistic but mostly local and in small groups. REAL Green also says techno solutions are part of this process but behavior is the key stating point. Behavior is the building block not more panels and turbines. The acceptance is more than green in REAL Green because we are also going through a destructive change with globalism that has powered techno optimism of the green revolution. What this means is techno optimism is not going to solve the economic crisis we are on the cusp of. This is a key area of failure of the FAKE Green and most scientist and academics who promote delusional programs like the green new deal. They never really get into the economic detail. There is then all the other problems that will require huge investment besides the climate. FAKE Greens can’t get their mind around failure so they do not address the entire picture of a multilevel predicament of many problems and traps. REAL Green transcends this with honesty by saying we are screwed but not right this moment. In the meantime, we have lots of prepping to do and further green prepping is a rewarding life that can make a difference locally with the environment and community.

  28. REAL Green on Wed, 27th Nov 2019 7:45 am

We are in a carbon trap with path dependencies. This means that we are in a catch 22. If we degrowth we face collapse and if we continue growth, we face collapse. It is pretty obvious what the global leadership will do. REAL Green says there are mitigation and adaptation strategies that include degrowth and growth that would take us a long way in an effort to a softer landing. REAL Green says this is an “open door closed door” strategy. This means we will go through doors that once opened will close behind us. No turning back if we make a wrong decision. These policies will not happen because they require some draconian decisions and some efforts that mean the end of industries, wealth transfer, and authoritarian control. We live in a world of politics that does not tolerate pain so many good treatments will be avoided because they involve pain. So, then the following is just a taste of what should happen but won’t because it can’t. That should explain why now is the time to doom and prep.

There are many industries that lower resilience and sustainability. These industries would need to be closed. Wealth transfer would need to go to effort to relocalize in permaculture of various kinds. Education system would be completely overhauled to promote new learning for an age of decline. Privilege and corruption rooted out by starving the host or in other words stop feeding the tape worm. Resources would be taken from the rich and invested in new settlements. Some draconian policies would be limits on migration and population growth. Militaries would be drastically reduced mainly in offensive capabilities. We are going to need militaries for security because decline and collapse is messy so security functions must be beefed up. The car culture will be repurposed to supporting localism and discouraging discretionary travel. Consumerism will be repurposed to end excessive consumption but instead funnel vital equipment and material to needed mitigation efforts. Health care would be dramatically changed to prepare for a more localized world with more home visits and less centralized care that is hyper expensive care that can’t be sustained. This means people in their last years of life will get less support. More effort will be on prevention and less on lengthening life. Families will care for their family instead of warehousing of the old. The food system would be dramatically change by localizing and eliminating vast ag industries that process and package at great cost. Restaurants chains would mostly go out of business.

I could go on and on but REAL Green says this is not going to happen. Since we are in a catch 22 trap these effective efforts would kill the system. So REAL Green says focus on individual and community-based strategies under the same umbrella of mitigation and adaptation and hope the top does not get in the way too much. What will happen is systematic decline as thresholds are crossed there will be bifurcations. These bifurcations will involve economic abandonment, dysfunctional networks and multiplying irrational policy. In a complex world with complicated systems this is a death knell for what is ahead. This will likely start regionally and within the system in segments and classes of people. The contagion will spread system wide at some point and the infection means any and all locals will be at risk. Of course, those that are more robustly sustainable with local resilience will survive better. Yet, the nature of the forces of chaos means even the best prepared will suffer and sometimes the least spared. Tornados behave in this way also. This will have a time frame but with crisis and recovery in a stair step down meaning recovery is less as the decline progresses until a stable level is reached. It does not have to mean an event that takes down civilization and the species in extinction but this will be a constant threat on the way down.

REAL Green says change your behavior now with acceptance of this process. This behavior change will allow a natural wisdom of collapse that will pick and choose techno solutions that fit decline not growth. Behavior naturally changes to Spartan stoic living in a humbler life. Humility comes with the acceptance of what collapse means. Collapse means destructive change that will not always be rational. It will mean your own personal behaviors will also be under stress hence humility. Irrational processes will cause irrational behavior even in the best of us. Declining in place with polices of yielding and deflecting decline are a must. This means conservation of effort and resources. Confrontational behavior must be minimized to avoid loses that cannot be rebuilt but deadly force must be trained for because security will decline. Security efforts need to be fortified with not only physical strategies but also personal strategies. REAL Green is a way of life that is green prepping with the acceptance of doom both planetary and society based.

    Symptoms of schizophrenia.

    DELUSIONS:

These are false beliefs that are not based in reality. For example, you think that you’re being harmed or harassed; certain gestures or comments are directed at you; you have exceptional ability or fame; or a major catastrophe is about to occur. Delusions occur in most people with schizophrenia.

    DISORGANIZED THINKING:

Effective communication can be impaired, and answers to questions may be partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include putting together meaningless words that can’t be understood, sometimes known as word salads.

    WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR:

People with schizophrenia often lack awareness that their difficulties stem from a mental disorder that requires medical attention. So it often falls to family or friends to get them help.

If you think someone you know may have symptoms of schizophrenia, talk to him or her about your concerns.

Although you can’t force someone to seek professional help, you can offer encouragement and support and help your loved one find a qualified doctor or mental health professional.

This is stupid. I have said in the past as best I can tell he suffers this condition:
