Is China Facing A Natural Gas Crisis?

Consumption

1. China’s gas needs growing

China Gas

– China’s consumption of natural gas is rising faster than its production, with the gap met by rising volumes of imports. In 2018, imports accounted for 45 percent of China’s gas supply, up from 10 percent in 2010, according to the EIA.

– China has tried to scale up shale gas production, with mixed success. Gas output is on the rise, reaching 15 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) in 2018, but demand (and thus, imports), are growing faster.

– Recognizing the growing import dependence, China introduced new subsidies for gas production in June 2019, and the government also loosened restrictions on foreign companies operating independently.

– China accounts for the largest source of LNG demand growth going forward, so new LNG export terminals around the world are constructed with an eye on China. But if China succeeds in ramping up domestic supply, that would cut into LNG import demand in the years ahead.

2. Petrochemical slump

Petrochem Slump

– Petrochemicals have been lauded as the next source of growth for the oil industry. Soaring plastic consumption is an environmental disaster, but oil companies, particularly the majors, see plastics as a growth sector and a hedge against peak oil demand for transportation.

– In the short run, the market for polyethylene, a building block of plastic, has fallen sharply. Prices are down 22 percent in the past year.

– The U.S.-China trade war has put a dent in demand, and the building spree for massive petrochemical complexes around the world – with $40 billion in the works for the U.S. Gulf Coast – has also raised fears of a glut for polyethylene.

– “Current trends continue to suggest a prolonged downturn” in chemicals, RBC Capital Markets said in a note.

– The bank said that ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) will be the most affected by the downturn.

3. Oilfield services cutting staff and equipment

Oilfield Services

– The slowdown in drilling is helping some shale drillers beat consensus earnings estimates for the third quarter, but the cutbacks mean serious pain for oilfield services companies that live and die by activity.

– Bloomberg reports that some companies are stripping their equipment for scrap parts, rather than merely idling it in the hopes of a rebound.

– “We don’t learn from our mistakes in this industry, do we?” Joseph Triepke, founder of Infill Thinking LLC and a former analyst at Citadel LLC’s Surveyor Capital, told Bloomberg. “The U.S. oilfield-service sector has overshot the growth cycle again resulting in a capacity glut. There’s too much of everything, from horsepower to sand.”

– About 10 percent of the industry’s capacity of pumping trucks, which are needed for fracking, are expected to be scrapped entirely.

– The number of completion crews is at its lowest level in two and a half years.

– Bank of America says that only 13 million horsepower will be in use in the fourth quarter, out of a total available 25 million horsepower. In other words, about half of the U.S. fracking capacity is not being used.

4. Higher IPs, steeper declines?

Initial Production

– Public filing data finds that the initial production rates for shale wells in the U.S rose again in 2019, continuing steady year-on-year increases peak production rates.

– However, the declines are becoming steeper than in previous years, offsetting some of the cumulative production gains.

– “This is likely due to a combination of the declining inventory of top-tier drilling acreage and the problem of ‘well communication’—when a well that is drilled too closely to another impairs the flow rate of both,” the Dallas Federal Reserve said.

– The result is that more drilling will be required each year in order to grow production, the Dallas Fed said.

5. Offshore investments from last upturn not making money

Offshore Investments

– The investment boom in offshore oil drilling during the 2010-2014 boom may not be profitable, according to a new analysis from Rystad Energy.

– In that five-year period, the industry gave final investment decisions on fields representing 40 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe). At the highpoint, the industry gave the green light on 13.2 billion boe in 2011.

– By 2016, FIDs only went forward on 0.6 billion boe. The pace has picked up since then.

– But the earlier vintage of investments was predicated on much higher oil prices.

– “Projects sanctioned between 2013 and 2014 are expected to have no value creation,” Rystad said.

– The more recent wave of investments made between 2015 and 2018 look much better.

6. Record high palladium prices fail to deter demand

Palladium Prices

– Palladium prices have shot up by 40 percent this year, surpassing $1,800 per ounce.

– “The market has been undersupplied for seven years; we forecast another deficit this year that is likely to persist into 2020,” Standard Chartered said in a research note.

– Notably, consumption has soared because of industrial demand. In other words, speculative interest is not necessarily the main driver of the price increase, the bank said.

– Demand has also held up despite the slump of the global auto industry. “Auto-catalysts account for over 80% of palladium’s end use, and even though car sales have slowed (down y/y in China and the US in September), platinum group metals (PGM) loadings have risen in line with tighter emissions standards,” Standard Chartered said.

– “Some estimates suggest a 50% rise due to the implementation of China 6 standards, which some cities have rolled out early,” the bank added.

7. Dollar strength undercuts metals

Dollar Strength

– The strong performance of the U.S. dollar at a time when the global economy has also slowed has proven to be a one-two punch for metals prices.

– The U.S.-China trade war is moving in a hopeful direction, but it has weighed on commodities.

– “We should not ignore the fact that metals prices measured in US dollars have been fairly stable in recent months, i.e. the slump in metals prices in US dollars was due largely to the strength of the US currency,” Commerzbank said in a note.

– But there is an opportunity for a rebound in metals prices. Economists are hopeful that the macroenvironment is improving, and in any event, the negatives have already mostly been priced in.

– “On such fertile soil, news of any lasting agreement in the trade conflict to actually trigger a metals price rally,” Commerzbank concluded.

Russia is ready to sell China and the EU all the NG they can use, no LNG required.

The rest of the sales pitch…er…article is about the collapsing economy in the US.

Yeah, a POS “article”. The Power of Siberia pipeline is basically finished:

The capacity is 38 billion cubic meters of gas per year as of now. This fully covers the demand increase for 2019:

    Any questions campers?

Not to mention a lot of that “oil” will be a lower net energy oil. We are scraping under the barrel and squeezing every drop of flammable liquids we can find, even at a financial loss. How long can that last?

Renewable energy has already won on price if its comes to raw energy production. The remaining missing link is storage, but that gap is being closed rapidly, with research groups all over the world working on it.

“Was There Another Reason For Electricity Shutdowns In California?”
    https://tinyurl.com/y5xjzj5j epoch times

“Could it be that PG&E’s heavy reliance on renewable energy means they don’t have the power to send when an “historic” weather event occurs? Wind Speed Limits The two most popular forms of renewable energy come with operating limitations. With solar power the constraint is obvious: the availability of sunlight. One does not generate solar power at night and energy generation drops off with increasing degrees of cloud cover during the day. The main operating constraint of wind power is, of course, wind speed. At the low end of the scale, you need about a 6 or 7 mph wind to get a turbine moving. This is called the “cut-in speed.” To generate maximum power, about a 30 mph wind is typically required. But, if the wind speed is too high, the wind turbine will shut down. This is called the “cut-out speed,” and it’s about 55 mph for most modern wind turbines…Now consider how California’s power generation profile has changed. According to Energy Information Administration data, the state generated 74.3 percent of its electricity from traditional sources—fossil fuels and nuclear—in 2001. Hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass-generated power accounted for most of the remaining 25.7 percent, with wind and solar providing only 1.98 percent of the total. By 2018, the state’s renewable portfolio had jumped to 43.8 percent of total generation, with wind and solar now accounting for 17.9 percent of total generation. That’s a lot of power to depend on from inherently unreliable sources. Thus, it would not be at all surprising to learn that PG&E didn’t stop delivering power out of fear of starting fires, but because it knew it wouldn’t have power to deliver once high winds shut down all those wind turbines.”

“Renewable energy has already won on price if its comes to raw energy production. The remaining missing link is storage, but that gap is being closed rapidly, with research groups all over the world working on it.”

That was a simpleton from the cloggo. Cloggo likes to cherry picking situations and then pee on himself. We see the lowest cost for raw power, no shit. This is not the case when multiple other scenarios are considered. You mentioned storage but there is also grid improvements and the need to do a double or triple the buildout of wind or solar to make up for intermittency at very high penetration rates. There are numerous costs your simpleton statement blew right over as if they are inconsequential. OOPs, that all costs money too which is another cloggo inconsequential.

  10. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 5:08 am

“You mentioned storage but there is also grid improvements and the need to do a double or triple the buildout of wind or solar to make up for intermittency at very high penetration rates. ”

You don’t need that AT ALL once you have seasonal storage in place. In the example of farmers they don’t even need a grid AT ALL:

    https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2019/11/02/energy-autonomy-for-farmers/

Seasonal storage, that’s likely power-to-gas. Once that is sufficiently developed, all you need is a mix of renewable energy generation and retrofitted conventional power stations, that no longer are fueled by oil, coal or gas, but by hydrogen or one of its many derivatives (like ammonia):

    https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2018/07/14/the-netherlands-is-placing-its-bets-on-the-hydrogen-economy/

The exact mix is a job to be figured out by mathematical modelers.

But you will instinctively talk down any renewable solution because you don’t want to give up on the fatal decision you took years ago, based on false data from the likes of Richard Heinberg and the rest of the peak-oil gang, namely that we are going to see a collapse of industrial civilization because we will run out of fossil fuel (I believed that shit myself until December 2012). You have build an entire prepper life around that colossal error of judgment and now you are fighting tooth and nail to avoid/postpone loosing face in the eyes of your family, friends, wife, etc.

But, in order to at least give you some hope, there is one collapse you ARE going to witness and that is the collapse of that empire of yours. Perhaps your farm can still serve as a life line for desperate hungry gangs from St. Louis East. But you’ll be in Italian safety by that time, while bolsheviks of the Dems variety, coloreds, alt-righters and Europeans are fighting over the left-overs of a failed multicultural society.

I have much more renewable energy than you do cloggo. I think I know very well how it works at the end user side of the equation. It does not pencil out, cloggo but it does offer value that is difficult to pencil. At the macro level it is fantastic what is happening in the world to a point. After a point the equation goes fuzzy and that is where your special brand of fantasy and cheerleading comes in. You are a fraud cloggo. You preach instead of doing science. You deceptively use science to preach like so many other FAKE Green technophiles. I was a peaker and still consider peak oil a real and present danger but now it’s not an immediate threat. Now we have multiple other dangers including the new systematic risk of incorporating the intermittency of renewables into an already fragile grid. We are running out of affordable fossil fuels and expensive renewables will not fix that. Sure, the raw price/power advantage of renewables can be cherry picked and talked about by snake oil salesman like yourself but reality makes you all look stupid when real and honest science is applied to your fantasy. This is especially true when penetration levels increase. That is when the simpleton cloggo injects this “The remaining missing link is storage, but that gap is being closed rapidly, with research groups all over the world working on it.” LOL.

“You have build an entire prepper life around that colossal error of judgment and now you are fighting tooth and nail to avoid/postpone loosing face in the eyes of your family, friends, wife, etc.”
My REAL Green life is a wonderful way of life or I would be ashamed to talk about it. It is about behavioral changes as well as lifestyle changes. It is not for everyone but there are many out there that could benefit. If more would undertake what I am doing instead of living in ocean front condos in Miami Beach having their asses wiped the world would be a little bit more resilient and sustainable. The key to REAL Green is it is too late to reform globalism and late stage capitalism. It is now time for hospices and life boats. Realgreenadaptation.blog explains this.

“But, in order to at least give you some hope, there is one collapse you ARE going to witness and that is the collapse of that empire of yours.”
It is a multi-polar world cloggo and one that does not have room for your PBM Eurasian nonsense. Europe will remain a rump along with Russia. China and the US will struggle against the unobtainable and maybe destroy each other and everyone else in the process. Unfortunately for China they got into the game far too late and too quick so bad things are ahead for China. The US has lived way beyond its means for too long and will pay for this too. Europe is the sandwich meat between all this. The rest of the world the condiments. Get a grip cloggo, euroland is sick and dying.

LOL, cloggo, there are a handful of city blocks in east St Louis that hardly represent the army you fantasize about.

  12. Antius on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 6:39 am

Storage of energy is expensive. It is much cheaper to adapt to the reality of a variable supply. This farm has developed a way of doing exactly that.

    https://www.notechmagazine.com/2019/07/living-energy-farm.html

This will be simpler with a mixture of energy sources. And storage can be used as an end-use solution, like grid responsive storage heaters.

Of course, you don’t need to bother with these issues much at all if you are sensible enough to develop a fleet of fast breeder nuclear reactors, like the Russians. But we are where we are, and we are run by the idiots that we have.

  13. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 6:44 am

“I have much more renewable energy than you do cloggo.”

Perhaps, but that is irrelevant for the big picture we are talking about. Btw, in Holland every city needs to produce a plan how to transition. By 2030 my household will be 100% renewable, incl. heat pump.

“Sure, the raw price/power advantage of renewables can be cherry picked and talked about by snake oil salesman like yourself but reality makes you all look stupid when real and honest science is applied to your fantasy.”

Typical empire dave post with zero numbers, full with ad hominem and zero content. He tries to defend a dying empire that is missing the boat on all fronts, be it renewable energy, planes, Syria, drug abuse and on the edge of a devastating civil war.

“It is a multi-polar world cloggo and one that does not have room for your PBM Eurasian nonsense. ”

Empire dave manages to put a contradiction into one sentence without noticing it.

““The remaining missing link is storage, but that gap is being closed rapidly, with research groups all over the world working on it.” LOL.”

‘LOL’ is not an argument, but instead an attempt to hide that you don’t have any.

  14. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 7:04 am

Here is the data for the US-2020:

    https://tinyurl.com/y87qp7yh

The price of a “raw kwh” in cents:

    Geothermal 5
    Gas (new stations) 7
    Onshore wind 7
    Hydro 8
    Coal 10
    Nuclear (10, new stations)
    Biomass 10
Gasified coal 12 (unlimited supply worldwide)
    Solar 12
    Gas 14 (conventional)
    Offshore wind 20

In Europe the cost of wind is comparable:

    https://windeurope.org/policy/topics/economics/

    Onshore: 6
    Offshore: 7

In other words, you can’t say that renewables are “expensive” in comparison to fossil, certainly not for Europe that hardly has any oil and gas and needs to import it all. For the development of a renewable energy infrastructure it is even an advantage not to have oil and gas, because it gives us a head start over the other players, with major geopolitical consequences, as history has shown.

And fossil HAS to go anyway because of the climate. So we have no choice but to fully embark on the renewable path (UK and France can choose nuclear if they have to, but not the entire world).

  15. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 7:13 am

…and with a proper mix of solar and wind, that largely even each other out over the seasons, you don’t need that much seasonal storage:

    https://deepresource.wordpress.com/2019/11/02/energy-autonomy-for-farmers/#jp-carousel-73705

And as Antius suggests, you can gain a lot with demand management. And seasonal storage of heat is very cheap with 90-95% efficiency:

    https://deepresource.wordpress.com/?s=ecovat

Question to empire dave: what is your energy strategy you would recommend to the US government? Come on, stick your neck out!

“My” strategy is in line with the EU, 90-100% renewable energy by 2050.

Note that empire dave won’t bite. What he really hopes for is a planetary die-off to the tune of 6 billion, with prepper dave surviving the onslaught and America “the last man standing”. He really hopes for that sinister scenario, our resident “racist!” and “natzi!”-howler and virtue signaler.

    Disgusting creature.

  16. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 7:29 am

How to approach the storage problem? Even if statistically solar and wind even each other out over the seasons, there is still the realistic possibility of a “Dunkelflaute” (“dark doldrums”?) of say 10 days in January.

The solution lies in the heat sector (no wonder Aris de Groot of Ecovat has picked this up.lol)

    https://www.ecovat.eu/nieuws/de-kwetsbaarheid-van-groene-stroom-de-dunkelflaute/

The university of Aalborg in Denmark has the solution:

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0360544218304080

“Renewable heating strategies and their consequences for storage and grid infrastructures comparing a smart grid to a smart energy systems approach”

“The conclusion is that the “smart grid” pathway requires a 2 – 4 times expansion of the electricity grid and significant investments in electricity storage capacities, while the “smart energy systems” pathway can be implemented with relatively few investments in affordable minor expansions of existing grids and storage capacities.” aldus Lund.

  17. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 7:51 am

To add to my previous post…

A “Dunkelflaute” of 10 days happens every 2 years.

50% of the primary energy use in Europe is heat. And that’s easy to store with high efficiency. A concrete vessel with 50 m diameter can store water at 90 Celsius for 6 months and losing 5-10% only. While everybody is talking about solar and wind, heat is the “sleeping giant” in energy land and warm bodies of matter can relatively simply serve to store large amounts of energy over a season.

Henrik Lund (Allborg) concludes that a smart energy system with a large thermal storage capacity is by far the cheapest. No new inventions needed, all low tech.

Here is an (English) report by the Dutch grid operator Tennet, pleading for a flexible approach:

    https://www.tennet.eu/fileadmin/user_upload/Company/Publications/Technical_Publications/Dutch/FlexibilityRoadmapNL.pdf

They expect power-to-heat (via heat pumps of course) to contribute to flexibilisation of the energy system.

In plain language: you can use the November storms to heat your water-based storage system, so in the Dunkelflaute of January you do not have to waste precious electricity on heating, because you can withdraw warm water from the hot water storage.

  18. Cloggie on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 8:01 am

Wind energy is the cheapest source of electricity generation:

    https://windeurope.org/policy/topics/economics

Wind energy is today the cheapest source of electricity generation in majority of places in the world. Unsubsidized onshore wind energy is cheaper than any other energy source, including conventional power generation sources such as coal and gas.

According to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance data, the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) of onshore wind in Europe ranges from $58 (€50) to $76 (€65)/MWh in H1 2018.

This cheap wind electricity can be stored (buffered) in large warm water bodies, via a heat pump.

Through this you already have solved a lot of your seasonal storage problems.

No new inventions required, just begin digging large holes with concrete casings.

Chicken! He doesn’t want to admit that he has no advice for or desires from the government. His government is too busy anyway with terrorizing the rest of the world for a century now, and couldn’t care less about renewable energy or the climate.

Empire dave admits he is a doomer and is only working on a “solution” for himself. The typical American, atomized, individualist, completely cut loose from community, let alone nation, concepts denounced as “collectivist”. The very reason btw why his country of individualists could be taken over by a (((group))) that is EXTREMELY well organized and couldn’t care less about individualism, basically a colonizer attitude.

This individualistic prepper approach is of ZERO VALUE in a real emergency, where a Toyota pickup with gang members (white or non-white) makes short thrift with our resident doomer and his goats and “deep green adaptation”.

I do not expect the government to deliver everything, but a coordinating role it can very well play. Without European governments, we would not have had Airbus, Galileo, ESA, the renewable energy program and a host of other successful programs, implemented by companies.

Empire dave is a self-admitted doomer and expects the world around him to fall apart. It probably will, in his case.

I used to think like that, since 2000 for demographic reasons and since 2005 because of peak oil.

Meanwhile I am more upbeat than ever before.

I sense that the nightmare of the US empire is almost over and we’re heading for a western European version of 1989 and subsequent liberation from ZOG.

Regarding energy and “peakoil”… I feel the same potential for massive technological progress with regards to renewable energy as I felt in the 80s and 90s regarding IT, my career. I have no doubt that the renewable energy transition is going to succeed, world-wide, based on what I saw after hundreds of hours of blogging on the subject.

    Summarized the above here:

“Heat Storage as Key to Seasonal Energy Storage”

  26. Davy on Sun, 3rd Nov 2019 9:33 am

“This is not a government endeavor only. That is the issue with Eurotards. They want to let the gov do it all and that will not solve the problem. It is part of the solution.” Chicken! He doesn’t want to admit that he has no advice for or desires from the government. His government is too busy anyway with terrorizing the rest of the world for a century now, and couldn’t care less about renewable energy or the climate.”
Cloggo, I saw from my blog you visited. Look harder, it is all there. Chicken.
The US is growing its renewable effort and Eurotard land is stalling. That is the trend.

“Empire dave admits he is a doomer and is only working on a “solution” for himself. The typical American, atomized, individualist, completely cut loose from community, let alone nation, concepts denounced as “collectivist”.
Only solutions for myself??? Liar. Why would I have a blog other than for relating my experiences to others. You are a fraud, cloggo. You say these things when you have been bitch slapped and flustered.

“This individualistic prepper approach is of ZERO VALUE in a real emergency, where a Toyota pickup with gang members (white or non-white) makes short thrift with our resident doomer and his goats and “deep green adaptation”.”
LOL, cloggo, I have guns too. I have training also. It is more like your imaginary gang members will be dead before they get 20 mi from their turf that is 150 miles from my farm. You have no clue about these things. You live in fantasyland.

“I do not expect the government to deliver everything, but a coordinating role it can very well play.”
Sure cloggo, but that is not the case in eurotard land. Government are pushing policies that are unproven and may be big mistakes. The cloggo thinks that is ok because those mistakes have not surfaced yet. When they do the cloggo will be stuttering and backtracking.

“ Without European governments, we would not have had Airbus, Galileo, ESA, the renewable energy program and a host of other successful programs, implemented by companies.”
These companies are one big subsidy, cloggo. And you act like that makes them a success. You crow about Boeing but part of the reason Boeing screwed up is fighting against unfair trade from Airbus.

“Empire dave is a self-admitted doomer and expects the world around him to fall apart. It probably will, in his case.”
I am an honest doomer “lite” acknowledging a decline process and prepping so I try to beat the rush. What is wrong with that especially since I am living locally and lowering my foot print the best I can. I am restoring my local environment and helping other. You on the other hand have a nasty dirty footprint spending your days promoting death and destruction by hoping for world wars and civil wars. You are a disgusting piece of rancid flesh.

“Meanwhile I am more upbeat than ever before.”
No you are not. Eurotards economy is not the golden decade you hoped for and Eurotard lands renewable effort is stalling. PBM and that might Eurotard army are fantasy.

Wind and solar with battery storage will become the standard every where. It is just better.

  35. Antius on Mon, 4th Nov 2019 10:50 am

“Wind and solar with battery storage will become the standard every where. It is just better”

Improbable. And saying it over and over won’t make it any more true.

Batteries are only suitable for short-term storage on the timescale of a few hours. Good for frequency regulation and they lengthen the slewrate of wind / solar long enough for backup plants to come online.

For long-term lulls you need something better.

  36. Duncan Idaho on Mon, 4th Nov 2019 10:54 am

Batteries are only suitable for short-term storage on the timescale of a few hours.

And lithium ion are the best we have on anything that scales. And they were first commercialized by the Japanese in the early 1990’s.
    Its been a while comrades—–

  37. Antius on Mon, 4th Nov 2019 11:17 am

Back in August, much of the UK faced blackouts, because a large wind farm suddenly dropped off grid and there was insufficient spinning reserve to pick up the load. Half an hour of battery storage could have prevented that, by giving more time for gas turbines to run up. As it was, the grid operator dealt with the sudden shortfall by shedding load. Unfortunately, when breakers trip, they require manual reset, which can take many hours.

The grid is very vulnerable to even small shortfalls in power supply.

All opinions aside, 2020, and beyond, is going to be much different then we are used to, everywhere. We are in the beginning of a slide down the lifestyle ladder, willingly or not. And, for some, it will be a painful crash.

The Great Leveling will see some places improve and some places go down. Guess which and where. I say Asia up and the West down. Remember, the median income over the world is only ~$15,000 per household, per year.

    https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=average+income+per+capita+in+the+world+today

IF, a huge word, we can get thru the 2020s without a major war, the world will be more on the 3rd level than the 1st, everywhere.

Adjust now and avoid the rush, if you can. Or, get out of Dodge.

i’m doing this because i want you all to send nixon (me) to china; meaning i want to make peace and focus our efforts on getting people’s trial of global muzzies for genocide of humanity started.

when i say don’t trust muzzies i get a lot of muzzie lovin’ resistance. that’s a form of ignorance right there because one assumes it is normal state of affair to trust – because trust has been working and gives us modern conveniences to make recreational sex possible (for those who are lucky, not me). but muzzies is justified morally and mandated to lie. oh but that’s the past, right?

nah, wrong. it’s not on point but muzzie ergodan (head of modern state, in western suits): “we muzzies are harsh against infidels”…”we muzzies fight for allah”. that’s a few days ago.

it takes great effort to ignore muzzies in this age of instant communication. i’m a tard, surely i must be very slow and dumb. but it turns out i’m lightyears ahead in this regard.
