3 Months Of Hell: U.S. Economy Drops 32.9% In Worst GDP Report Ever

3 Months Of Hell: U.S. Economy Drops 32.9% In Worst GDP Report Ever thumbnail

The coronavirus pandemic triggered the sharpest economic contraction in modern American history, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Gross domestic product — the broadest measure of economic activity — shrank at an annual rate of 32.9% in the second quarter as restaurants and retailers closed their doors in a desperate effort to slow the spread of the virus, which has killed more than 150,000 people in the U.S.

The economic shock in April, May and June was more than three times as sharp as the previous record — 10% in 1958 — and nearly four times the worst quarter during the Great Recession.

“Horrific,” said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Markit. “We’ve never seen anything quite like it.”

Another 1.43 million people filed for state unemployment last week, an increase of 12,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. It was the second week in a row of increased unemployment filings and shows that the economic picture continues to remain grim.

GDP swings are typically reported at an annual rate — as if they were to continue for a full year — which can be misleading in a volatile period like this. The overall economy in the second quarter was 9.5% smaller than during the same period a year ago.

After a sharp drop in March and April, economic activity began to rebound in May and June, although that recovery remains halting and could be jeopardized by a new surge of infections.

“As soon as the virus started to take off again in key states like Texas, California, Arizona, Florida, it’s fading very rapidly,” Behravesh said.

Restaurant owner Cameron Mitchell likens the pandemic to a hurricane. What appeared to be a business rebound in June turned out to be merely the eye of the storm, and he’s now being buffeted by gale-force winds again.

“Our associates are more scared to work today and guests are more afraid to go out, so sales have dropped,” Mitchell said.

Cameron Mitchell operates more than 50 restaurants in 13 states. He says business was rebounding in June but has dropped again with the surge in new coronavirus infections.

Cameron Mitchell Restaurants

Business at his restaurants in Florida had nearly recovered to pre-pandemic levels in June but has since fallen sharply.

Other industries have enjoyed a more durable recovery, though few are back to where they were in February.

Dentists’ offices are ordinarily one of the more stable parts of the economy, but they closed for all but emergency services during much of the spring. Dental hygienist Alexis Bailey was out of work for 10 weeks before her office in Lansing, Mich., reopened at the end of May.

At first, she was reluctant to go back to work while the virus was still circulating.

“I was terrified,” Bailey said. “I was not happy to be back. But I have a job to do and I like to do it and I want to help people. We talk about how essential we are, so that’s what we’ve had to do.”

Dental hygienist Alexis Bailey was initially nervous about returning to work but says she quickly grew comfortable with the new protective measures, including a face shield (not shown).

Christina Dauka, MSDH

Within an hour of returning to work, Bailey said, she began to feel comfortable, particularly with the additional protective gear and other safety precautions her office has adopted.

“I tell my patients all the time I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t feel safe,” she said.

Nationwide, dental offices added more than a quarter-million jobs in May and another 190,000 in June. And there has been no shortage of patients.

She thought no one would want to come. “But we’re booked,” Bailey said. “People miss getting their teeth cleaned. They want to catch up. Every time they come in, they say, ‘This has been nice to get out of the house and feel safe and talk to somebody.’ ”

Factory production has also begun to rebound, along with construction. But airlines and amusement parks are still struggling.

“It’s very much a sort of two-tiered economy right now,” Behravesh said.

The unemployment rate approached 15% in April, and in June it was still higher — at 11.1% — than during any previous postwar recession.

While the drop in GDP was largely driven by a decline in consumer spending, the economic fallout was cushioned somewhat by an unprecedented level of federal relief.

Wages and salaries fell sharply in April, but that was more than offset by the $1,200 relief payments that the government sent to most adults and by supplemental unemployment benefits of $600 per week.

Those government payments helped prevent an even steeper drop in consumer spending — the lifeblood of the U.S. economy — and allowed struggling families to buy groceries and pay rent.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that the money “has been well spent. It has kept people in their homes. It has kept businesses in business. So that’s all a good thing.”

Those extra unemployment benefits are expiring this week, though. With coronavirus infections still threatening the recovery, additional federal support is likely to be necessary.

“Until we get the virus under control, we’re going to need more help,” Behravesh said. “Our view is that we’re not going to get to the pre-pandemic levels of economic activity until some time in 2022.”

Restaurant owner Mitchell says his business lost $700,000 in June alone. He predicts a wave of restaurant bankruptcies unless the federal government provides more relief.

“No one is looking for a handout here,” he said. “We’re looking to survive.”

He’s watching news of vaccine trials closely in hopes that eventually diners will feel comfortable eating out again in large numbers.

“I don’t think it’s the next couple of weeks,” he said. “But I tell our team, ‘Every day that goes by, it’s one day closer to the end of this thing.’ ”

Wrong headline. Contraction Q2 is ca. 10%.
    That 32.9% is “annualized”.

The elites planned and triggered this flu bullshit. It was NOT an accident or natural.

This is the Great Leveling I have been talking about. It was going too slow so they decided to hyprspeed the Western collapse. Looks like they might just succeed as the dumbed-down, brainwashed lemmings are following the ‘expert’ idiots off the cliff of financial/economic collapse.

The deaths are only a sideline and not important except that there have been way too few as far as the One Worlders are concerned. Not even as many as the 2010 Swine flu (~600,000). I’m sure they were shooting for millions, not a few hundred thousand, ‘miscounts’ included.

But, if this one fails, I am sure the next one will succeed. They are not done with us. Too many eaters consuming THEIR resources. Sigh!

    Dumbcan’s mob:

When the Going Gets Weird, the Weird Get Punked

Did you happen to view the Attorney General being assailed by lunatics in the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday? It kind of looked like a scene from the French Revolution acted out by a road company touring Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Barr stolidly endured their orchestrated calumnies as though he had larger matters on his mind. Do not suppose it will end there, or end well for this shabby claque of mutts and harpies.
There is the rectified essence of your Democratic Party circa the awful year 2020, spreading its poisons into every organ of society like a fungal overgrowth, making the nation crazy as the old economy of cheeseburgers and happy motoring disintegrates under the spell of a mystifying plague and the peoples’ zombie indifference turns to epic woe and fury.
If the forlorn homunculus Chairman Nadler accomplished anything, it was to ratchet up Mr. Barr’s determination to round up and indict the figures behind the years-long campaign of sedition waged against the public interest and decency. Sometime before Halloween, an awful wrath is going to befall Barack Obama’s wingmen and handmaidens, and it will be a supremely sobering moment.
It’s the elected Democrats of Oregon — Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Governor Kate Brown — who have turned the Federal Courthouse there into a new Alamo by ordering their police to stand down. And isn’t it rather strange that they’ve gotten The New York Times and CNN rooting against the tiny crew of federal officers bravely defending the place? In a sane country, these politicians would be indicted as accessories to riot and insurrection. And the same goes for elected Democrats in Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Richmond and other cities where the Antifa freaks are allowed to run wild.
Meanwhile, there was an odor of desperation at the funeral for Rep. John Lewis in Washington as Mr. Obama inveighed against the use of tear gas on “peaceful demonstrators” — the big lie of the season. Who has not seen the many videos of these masked freaks launching mortars and smashing things in the streets? Such a naked hustle suggests that the former president is using the mobs to mau-mau the country while he maneuvers to keep a legion of his former lieutenants out of jail. The screws are turning, as Attorney General Barr’s unflappable demeanor implied during the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Tuesday.
The election itself is another front in this undeclared civil war. How exactly did the Democratic Party come to settle on a candidate with no credible capacity to serve as president? Who is Joe Biden fronting for, and who do they think they’re fooling? How can he possibly deliver an acceptance speech three weeks from now without giving away the game? That will be something to see — but I doubt we will actually see it. If the Dems don’t switch him out, there is no way Mr. Biden can survive the three-month homestretch of an election campaign. He can barely make it through a ten-minute appearance in front of twenty-three hand-picked partisans in a TV studio. Life imitates art, as Oscar Wilde tartly observed. The Manchurian candidate is truly here.
Mr. Barr is quite correct when he avers that an election by mail-in ballots is an invitation to fraud. The parallel campaign by the news media to ramp up extra hysteria over the corona virus is designed to ensure that scam. Keeping kids out of school is another angle on it, to plant a narrative that parents can’t possibly leave the house to go to a polling station. Wait for it. The result would be an election that can’t be resolved even by the Supreme Court. What will happen then?
I’ll tell you how it goes: Donald Trump will stand aside and yield to the military, to some general or committee of generals, and the country will be under martial law until the election is sorted out or re-run. And by then, the election may be the least of our problems, with tens of millions out-of-work, out-of-business, penniless, homeless, and hungry. That’s when they’ll truly be selling postcards of the hanging, as the old song goes. Then comes America’s Bonaparte moment. Yes, things can get that weird.

This is manipulation of potential energies of gravity and physical manipuation of B field.

slap an ASIC on it to take care of the tunning and cool the magnet in a natural stream and it becomes an entropy manipulating machine.

The US government has awakened to that reality and now the long standing foreign policy with China has taken a dramatic u-turn, reverse course 180, etc and is especially blunt under the Trump administration but would still stay the course regardless who is the figurehead POTUS… its a repudiation of the US reapproachment with China 45 years ago… Pompeo himself recently said that US got nothing out of the nearly 50 year relationship and “nothing to show for it”… for sure, China’s easy mode is over, and now has to seriously contend and defend itself against an anger and vicious Amerikkka that want nothing more than to rip China apart for daring to challenge the white world order…

US got wrong some of its core assumptions about China, that as China opened up its government would become more democratic (as in easier for CIA influence/ coups/etc) and its people would demand the so called freedum of speech and other so called liberties (so US can push its proganda into China and turn the Chinese citizens against their own “repressive” goverments if the said governments don’t do what Washington asks etc) and all the way up until around 2013 America still believed that a stronger China was a net benefit to US hegemony rather than competition against it, because it was (in retrospect) overly confident in that end China would be ever content under the wings and umbrella of Uncle Sam and would acqueise much like the Japanese during the 80’s and the Plaza Accord.

If you understand what the US gov had planned for decades and that it didn’t pan out, then you can understand why the US is so pissed off at China right now… US helped faciliate China’s growth not out of the kindness of their heart, and certaintly not because they cared one iota about the wellbeing of the Chinese people, but because the endgame had always been to grow China large enough that one day when the it got ripe enough the US was planning on harvesting China, and recapturing that wealth by taking China to the slaughters and in essence China was supposed to be one big piggybank that the US was storing up for its own retirement phase! Instead China wised up and said no, and went for Africa, to give the African countries a better overall deal, and now in one fell swoop the US is in danger of losing its cheap labor pool and its resource pool (the objective was to have China always be America’s cheap factory by making sure China never climbed out of the middle income trap and to keep Africa poor so it can get the lowest rates on resource extraction since a developing Africa would have more bargaining power and cause the price of commodities and resources to go up etc)

  40. bochen777 on Sat, 1st Aug 2020 6:48 pm

The American system, as it currently is, was always unsustainable and could only ever keep on keeping on if China went with it as well… America is not going to leave China alone no matter how peaceful China is because China takes up enough of the world pie that if it didn’t willingly integrate under the US system and if it could go off and do its own thing or set up parallel system etc, then the US collapses and the house of cards comes crashing down…

  46. bochen777 on Sat, 1st Aug 2020 10:59 pm

USA has a lot of hidden advantages too.. you know the saying that all is fair in love and war?

People like to talk about laws, rules, rule of law, rules based system, but its all meaningless. These schemes exists to serve hegemony not the other way around… The only real “rules” are those imposed by the constraints of the laws of physics, everything else goes in the fight to maintain/win hegemony… the US side knows that at current status quo if nothing drastic is done to change course that in the long run China will win…

So US will try everything possible outside the box to prevent that from happening… and as we have seen, even countries that initially welcomed the Huawei 5G (for the better deal) were pressured and really coerced/blackmailed in joining the US camp in terms of shunning away Chinese tech/deals… this is all US trying to protect its own hegemony, but fair or not, right or wrong, at the end of the day its result based, it is what US can achieve or what China hasn’t achieved…

China is behind on PR, propaganda, informational warfare, and US holds the platforms of control and information chokepoints (Google platform, Apple ecosystem, Microsoft etc) and so a lot of tactics that the US can use on China, is asymmetrical and China cannot use the same to fight back etc…

In order of costs, its cheaper to use PR/spin/propaganda and information warfare to destabilize and color revolution a country and then do a coup than it is to invade that country…. for bigger nations like China, invasion would be way to expensive, and a coup is not all that likely since China has taken active measures to protect itself, but the US has other strategies like economic warfare, weaponizing its dollar hegemony, maybe even biowarfare, cyberwar, and basically a CIA mystery fire of ASML EUV machine here, ASF for pork price inflation there, overthrow of Bolivia elected leader to deprive China of the lithium contracts, well you get the picture, its containment of China by a thousand slices… China is at disadvantage here because China isn’t good at PR, brainwashing, and China doesn’t do false flag operations like Pearl Harbor, Gulf of Tonkin, 911/ 7/7, covid, etc

US also has the ability to get its vassals to shoulder the burden of fighting China for it, even if its too costly for America to take down China by itself, it has the uncanny ability to recruit its vassals to put American interests about their own, politics above economics, and if US can unite together a good portion of the world all willing (coerced or otherwise but I think the US term is “partner of choice” which is doublespeak like free speech is only free to say what they allow to say, so the choice is there if only you choose the US lol ) to place the interest of US above that of the citizens of their own country then collectively that would be enough to reverse the tide and not only contain but also erase China’s growth/ascension… this would be the worst outcome for China, to be isolated and bypassed on the world stage…

I agree with a lot of his points. The right’s cards aren’t bad indeed and they would be foolish to volunteer to live under the whip of BLM-ers and SJW-ers. The motive to secede is there and the moment is now, especially if Trump loses or chaos will erupt from a contested election result, the ideal launchpad for a right-wing uprising.

Where I differ is that he overestimates the potential support of the regular army. They may have voted for Trump two to one, but that doesn’t mean they voted for disoluttion of the US or will defect 2:1. There is a heavy price to be paid for defection from the army. Loss of income and potential death penalty for desertion. You really must be sure the defection will succeed, and nobody can be sure at the start of the war. On the plus side, he underestimates foreign involvement. I don’t think European former vassal regimes will mind very much that they will regain sovereignty again from the overlord, where they ruled the world 1492-1945 and have the EU as a successor power vehicle. France will love it, Merkel-Germany will deplore it, Britain will hate it, that just burned all its ships behind it with Brexit. The US revolutionary right will receive a lot of support from Russia, Eastern Europe, especially Poland, Italy, France. The left from Britain and China.

boch.. I disagree. The US’ “Vassals” are moving away from the Us and either neutral or moving towards China. Maybe you need an update on the real world?

The idea of a “color revolution” is also wearing thin. The world is waking up to Amerika’s methods and countering them. Hong Kong for instance.

The US id dying. All the signs point to it being a 3rd world country by 2030. Prove me wrong, with refs.
