Peak Gold and the Coming Supply Crunch
During the lackluster and otherwise unremarkable trading of 2018, a hugely important development took place in the precious metals markets. Gold production, in the estimation of some top industry insiders, peaked.
Peak gold represents the point at which the total number of ounces being pulled out of the ground by miners reaches a maximum.
It doesn’t necessarily mean gold production will suffer a precipitous fall. But it does mean the mining industry lacks the capacity to ramp up production in order to meet rising global demand and even higher prices would not make it happen.
One of the leading proponents of the peak gold thesis is Ian Telfer, chairman of Goldcorp (which was recently acquired by Newmont Mining to become the world’s biggest gold company).
Telfer remarked in 2018, “In my life, gold produced from mines has gone up pretty steadily for 40 years. Well, either this year it starts to go down, or next year it starts to go down, or it’s already going down… We’re right at peak gold here.”
We’ll soon find out whether his call for gold production to fall in 2019 pans out. If it does, the implications for precious metals investors are enormous.
The concept of peak gold is controversial, to be sure.
Skeptics point to the thwarting of peak oil over the past decade. Just as technological breakthroughs in fracking and horizontal drilling caused an unexpected surge in crude oil supplies, could not advances in gold mining techniques also lead to an unforeseen supply surge?
When human ingenuity combines with the right market incentives, nothing can be ruled out. But unlike crude oil which is a byproduct of decayed living organisms and exists in various grades all over the world, gold is a basic element that came to us from exploding stars billions of years ago.
The amount of gold in earth’s crust is fixed. By contrast, oil and other hydrocarbons can be produced synthetically from renewable biomass.
Perhaps one day we’ll mine for gold in space or generate it in nuclear reactors or particle accelerators. Theoretically, it’s possible. Practically, there’s no prospect of these unconventional methods of boosting earth’s gold reserves becoming economically viable in our lifetimes. It would take a true “moon shot” in the gold price and/or a technological breakthrough that might be decades away from coming to fruition.
In the meantime, the gold mining industry is experiencing a major wave of consolidation.
Last year Barrick Gold and Randgold merged. This year Newmont Mining acquired Goldcorp. Many lesser known junior mining and exploration companies have been or may soon be gobbled up by senior producers looking for an economical way to grow their reserves.
Developing new mines is expensive, time consuming, and risky.
It’s difficult these days for the majors to even identify viable new projects that would add significantly to their asset base. As new discoveries shrink, many have decided it makes more sense to buy up the assets of smaller competitors while they are on sale.
It may prove beneficial to corporate bottom lines, but M&A activity doesn’t necessarily translate into more ounces being pulled out of the ground on an industry-wide basis. To the contrary, it’s a sign that mining companies aren’t keen on investing in the exploration and development of new mines.
After years of “high grading” – processing the easier to get, higher quality deposits first – future gold extraction costs could get progressively steeper for existing major mines.
Even at $1,300 an ounce, gold prices aren’t high enough to generate attractive returns on investment. Many gold mining companies are barely breaking even after their all-in costs are considered.
Canadian mid-tier producer Iamgold announced recently that it will halt construction at one of its gold projects in Ontario. Iamgold CEO Stephen J.J. Letwin said the company will “wait for improved, and sustainable, market conditions in order to proceed with construction.”
That’s just one example among many of why gold production could begin to taper off and decline overall in 2019.
Refinitiv GFMS analysts forecast gold mining output will decrease slightly this year – from approximately 3,282 tonnes in 2018 to 3,266 tonnes.
The expected fall-off may not be huge, but the wider impact on the precious metals markets very likely will be. With central bank buying continuing to be robust, jewelry demand in India back on the upswing, and investor interest returning amidst volatile financial markets, a slight decrease in production relative to rising demand — sets the stage for a rip-roaring secular bull market.

Sissyfuss, yes, but…you and I have to survive the coming years, so why not prepare? We cannot stop the extinction event from happening, but we do not have to suffer our last years in unnecessary pain because, unlike millions, we have the resources to make the decent less painful.
I am not a masochist who enjoys pain for its own sake. I want to be able to help those with less as much as possible. I do so now. We are planting far more than we need so we can give it away to neighbors and friends who don’t have our resources. I want to do for others what I would hope someone would do for me if I needed. I’m not a masochist. I enjoy life and live it as best I can with what I have. My energy footprint is much like that of Filipinos now. That is about 1/20th the energy use of Americans. I’m using a 10 year old PC and use a 9 year old cell phone. No TV. No car. No i-toys. My home does not need to be heated or cooled. Our new farmhouse can be totally energy free, except for wood to cook on. Can you say that about your home? Where do you live? Temperate zone? Tropics? You know where I live. The land of eternal summer.

I’m a fighter and I will do everything in my power- financially, personally- to make sure as many species make it through the human induced apocalypse.
And I have already made the difference between life and extinction for the Yellow-eared parrot. At the time I committed funding to establish an 11.000 acre nesting and feeding habitat reserve, only 81 individuals existed. Today there are more than 500. Connecting the newly created reserve of 11.000 acres to an existing reserve of 6.000 acres creates a 14 mile long protected area for the parrot and numerous other species.
The local community also benefits hugely. The tremendous pristine water resources of the reserves supplies the local community with a source of clean water all at zero expense since we donate the water.
Consequently, it’s a win for people and nature.
Mak, you do nothing to aid nature. And the Philippines is in desperate need of protected areas. Do you really believe your farm will survive if the environment collapses? I have noticed how many older people are conditioned to ignore the importance of a diverse and healthy ecosystem. Per Mongabay:

The Rev. Peter Walpole, executive director of the Ateneo de Manila University Environmental Science for Social Change, said logging operations-legal and otherwise- are mowing down the country’s remaining forest cover. The Philippines “trusted” logging companies to cut down trees and manage the forest. “But they did a very bad job,” he decried. “That started the problem that we have now.”
Between 1990 and 2005 the Philippines lost a third of its forest cover, according to FAO estimates, but the country’s deforestation is down since its peak in the 1980s and 1990s.
Widespread logging was responsible for much of the historical forest loss in the Philippines. Despite government bans on timber harvesting following severe flooding in the late 1980s and early 1990s, illegal logging continues today.”
Philippines Coral Reefs Slowly Dying
Nearly all of the ecologically-fragile coral reefs in the Philippines are under severe threat from economic development and climate change.
This is according to an update circulated by the Southeast Asian Centre of Excellence (SEA CoE) during the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium held here.
The Philippines is part of the so-called “coral triangle,” which spans eastern Indonesia, parts of Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands. It covers an area that is equivalent to half of the entire United States.
Although there are 1,000 marine protected areas (MPAs) within the country, only 20 percent are functioning, the update said. MPAs are carefully selected areas where human development an d exploitation of natural resources are regulated to protect species and habitats.
In the Philippines, coral reefs are important economic assets,contributing more than US$1 billion annually to the economy.
“Many local, coastal communities do not understand or know what a coral reef actually is, how its ecosystem interacts with them, and why it is so important for their villages to preserve and conserve it,” SEA CoE said in a statement.
As the reefs die, a critical source of protein for the Philippine masses will die as well.

I don’t know if MOb is Davy or not. If he is then he is 100% crazy. Mob’s language usage style has changed through time suggesting that he is indeed someone’s sock puppet. I do know that Davy has in the past created multiple personalities and sock puppets on this forum. His attempts to disguise himself have been incredibly sophisticated, including expressing different views and using language in different ways, but sooner or late he betrays himself.
I also know that he has repeatedly stolen my identity. Again, this is done very carefully. He uses my own words, which he copies and pastes from previous comments I made, and intersperses them with lies, distortions, and insults to try and set other people against me.
Why would I think that someone capable of all that is not capable of being MOB, too? Mob sometimes uses expressions which Davy has used many times and which are like a fingerprint. I refused to accept that Mob was a Davy for a long time, but now I have doubts about it. What I have no doubt about is that Davy is capable of it.

It hasn’t been bad at all. We just had a regular winter cold front. The lower temperatures were in the mid 50s, but in the 60s and 70s during the day. Great weather to work outdoors without sweating too much. I did loose one week of my tomato harvest at the farm to excessive rain, which mostly fell at night when I was sleeping, but the winter is very dry in the winter here and that rain is essential to non irritated natural landscapes and food forests I work with so it was welcomed. I didn’t even have to use the heaters at home or in the car once. Miami in the winter is a great place to be, particularly in an oceanfront place like my home.

JuanP, I guess the extra rain either rotted the roots or caused the tomatoes to split open. We have similar water problems here with an annual rainfall of about 12 ft. Most things have to be planted on hills or ridges except the native stuff like pineapples, cassava, bananas, mangoes, etc.
The rain averages out with no real dry spells, just a few days without rain occasionally. Our home water system is by gravity from the rain, but it is more than enough for all of our needs. At more than 80 gallons per square foot, a 1,200 sq.ft. roof collects about 100,000 gallons per year. We use about 12,000 to 15,000 gallons per year so we can easily handle anyone who wants to move to the farm. The overflow goes into the pond.
