Yemen’s main oil pipeline bombed, crude flow stops

Yemen’s main oil pipeline bombed, crude flow stops thumbnail

Armed tribesmen bombed Yemen’s main oil pipeline on Saturday, halting crude flow to the country’s main export terminal less than a month after it was repaired, oil and local officials said.

The attack occurred in the Serwah district in the central oil-producing province of Maarib, they said, and caused a huge fire that prompted the closure of the pipeline and stopped oil flow from the Maarib fields to the Ras Isa oil terminal on the Red Sea.

Yemen, which relies on crude exports to finance up to 70 percent of its budget, has suffered frequent bombings of its main pipeline in recent years. The last one took place on Dec. 26 and the pipeline was repaired on Jan. 5.

Disgruntled tribesmen stage these attacks to pressure the government to provide jobs, settle land disputes or free relatives from prison.

Such lawlessness is a global concern, particularly for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies, because of Yemen’s strategic position next to oil exporter Saudi Arabia and to main shipping lanes.

Yemen is also home to one of al Qaeda’s most active wings.

Before a spate of attacks that began in 2011, the 270-mile Maarib pipeline carried around 110,000 barrels per day to Ras Isa.

“Such lawlessness is a global concern, particularly for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies,”

And bombing entire countries and their peoples back into the Stone Age in order to exploit their resources, is of course, lawful and just.

    The natives are restless.

Good job, now let them repair it, congratulate themselves on a job well done. After they leave, blow it up again, repeat as necessary until the US leaves.

DC — Just from reading the article, it looks like what the tribal bombers want is to “pressure the government to provide jobs, settle land disputes or free relatives from prison.” Not force the US to leave. I hear that rose-colored glasses cause a person to see everything in a rose-colored light. And with you, DC, your hate-America colored glasses cause you to see everything in the context of your hatred for America, which tends to distort your perceptions a bit. Or so it seems to me.

I am with you NR! DC I would find your stories more informative if you would stop the propaganda machine. Get your point across in more subtle ways. You remind me of the very group you hate i.e. the American propaganda machine or the Iranian’s, or the Taliban. Get some sophistication and you will make a bigger impact

Northwest and Davy both need to take off their blinders and see the real US. Most of the world would be happy to see the US go under and be forced to pull all of their CIA goons, military, etc, out of their countries.

The US has been behind most of the world’s problems for the last 70+ years and still meddles in 135+ countries in the world. No other country has more than a few bases outside of their country. The US has over 1,000. ALL causing trouble wherever they are. I am an American and still wish their financial system would collapse and shut down their ability to make war.

I do not deny the crimes of the US. I am especially upset with the NSA smucks but the real story is so much more complicated. I just find DC’s message similar to the puke from Fox news, Iranians, Taliban, oil companies, and all the other BS spewing butt holes. So my point is just be more subtle with the rhetoric and achieve far more bang for the buck. The message looks simpleton when it is so charged with rhetoric.

Makati1 — I definitely do not have blinders on when it comes to seeing “the real US”. But I also do not have an excess of hatred for America which results in my feeling compelled to inject my hatred for America into everything I read. This article was about restless tribesmen trying to get concessions out of their government, none of which involved America. But you and DC can’t resist your compulsive impulses to introduce your hatred of America in your comments even when it is off topic. And be careful what you wish for, Makati1. When (not if) the “American” (actually global) financial system collapses, that little tiny group of tropical islands where you live will turn into pure hell.

Did I say I hated the US? No, I said the US is now a terrorist bully. The US I knew was ok until the last 30-40 years. It always had it’s bad side, but now it is so much worse. It is the addict in the last stage of addiction, murder and pillage for that last fix. The US cannot exist as a democracy without excess cheap energy. In fact, I don’t think it can even exist as a country. It would have to pull in it’s military and abandon all of it’s bases and cut the military to a small fraction of the existing. I don’t see that happening. I see war instead. That one last fix.
