Pentagon Sending Troops Into Ukraine In April

Pentagon Sending Troops Into Ukraine In April thumbnail
According to a Department of Defense press release, the Pentagon is sending 290 US service members into Ukraine to train Ukrainian military units in April. The training will reportedly occur in the Ukrainian city of Yavoriv near the Ukraine-Poland border. The US soldiers will be from the 173rd Airborne Brigade based in Vicenza, Italy.

The basis for the training mission, per the press release, is to further “ongoing efforts to help sustain Ukraine’s defense and internal security operations. In particular, the training will help the Ukraine government develop its National Guard to conduct internal defense operations.”

As Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland herself pointed out before Congress, the US does not have a defense treaty with Ukraine making the act of sending in troops to train Ukraine forces seemingly inappropriate if not openly provocative to Russia. Or maybe that’s the point?

The government in Kiev is struggling to maintain order and has been jailing journalists and others for opposing the draft and the continued war with separatists in the east. The government also faces an increasing threat from neofascist militias known as “volunteers” that it once empowered. The militias have become antagonistic of the government and threatened to overthrow it for failing to crush the separatists.

President Poroshenko’s attempts to consolidate power have been made easier by a wave of apparent suicides by former officials of overthrown President Viktor Yanukovich. Whether a weakened opposition is enough to help him fend off disaster remains to be seen as the Ukrainian economy poses just as much of a threat to his rule as the neofascist militias. Yesterday Ukraine’s finance minister warned that Ukraine could be forced into defaulting on its debts if there was not a restructuring soon.

Will US military involvement make the situation for Ukraine better or worse?

Apeman, you know Putin is a lier, thief, and war monger megalomaniac. Yet he has got personality with KGB charm, chess champion, and macho hunter. He is a smart guy too with coherent speeches unlike other leaders especially the Americans. The guy is even a judo champion. War has brought his popularity from the doldrums to highest of any of the important nations. He is truly a gifted statesman and an asset for the Russian 1$%’ers.

Sure and the hell is better than Obama. Maybe we can trade for Putin offering Obama and throw in Cruz, McCain, and your butthole Harper for boot. That would solve this country’s problems for sure.

Yes Putin is a liar and a thief. Most likely a murderer of some of the guilty and many more innocents too. Is the prize worth the risk this time? Russia is not Iraq or Libya – this is a different league that none of the current people in charge have any experience with. I guess for the psychopath 1%ers and true believer neo-con’s it is. When the escalation and tensions ratchet up all it could take is one mistake – one miscommunication – one bad decision down the chain and it’s all out war and every major city and military instillation in N America and Europe has a Russian Nuke with their name on it. Bullies who have only ever taken on weak kids sooner or later run into one that is stronger and hits back. It’s true what they say about generational memory loss and the consequences of war – people forget the price.

Allow me to ask, that unit being from Italy — why is Italy still ocupied by Americans 70 years after the end of WWII?

Apeman, I was trying to use poor humor and piss off as many people as I could in the process. I feel devious today for some reason.

So apparently because the US government, unlike every other govt in the history of the world, has done stupid things in the past and has often elected assholes to government should not say anything to upset Mr. Nice Guy Putin because some genius commenter interprets that as trying to start WW3.

    Did I get that right?

Apneaman, How much does Russia pay You to right this propaganda garbage and speak so Highly of a DICTATOR wanting to consume all of the Old USSR and more?? I’m in shock You can speak so much about the things going on in Ukraine and don’t see or live in the SITUATIONS AND PROBLEMS Putin is putting on Ukraine. I agree that it is difficult to make the perfect decision about what to do but the best way to look at a problem is “HOW IT STARTED” and then maybe You would have a different thinking about what You speak!!! Unless You are payed to write these stupid evaluations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Baba & Dido were from Ukraine. They got out in the 1920’s and never went back. There are people there that I am distantly related to, but have never met. I am sorry for your suffering and the suffering of the innocents (as I mentioned before). I also acknowledged that Putin is a bad man and I have said in other comments that he has undoubtedly provided weapons. That does not make him the sole architect of the current tragedy in Ukraine. It also took many corrupt power hungry Ukrainians, their thugs and their misguided followers to help it along. They made a choice. Of course their worst choice was to get in bed with the Americans. You guys choose that – you cheered Vicky Nuland and John McCain and a bunch of Neo-Nazi’s on your streets and then split each others blood on those streets. Your people chose to go down that road – not me. If you were paying attention to history (recent & ancient) you would have noticed that only a very few benefit when accepting the helping hand of empire and always the people get hurt. Taking that IMF money has guaranteed that there is only slavery in Ukraine’s future – they will bleed Ukraine dry like every other country that whored itself out to them. Your in the thick of it and obviously very emotional, so your evaluations are clouded by tribalism and passion. The very fact that you have Putin tunnel vision tells me the mass media/think tank propaganda campaign has worked full force on you (you not alone). Every President, King, Cesar, Emperor and Warlord in history has had to share power on some level – none of them pulls every string or gets every thing they want.
