Orlov: The Limits of Propaganda

Public Policy

As Paul Craig Roberts has recently reported, the US government is in the process of launching an all-out war on truth. Those who express views contrary to the party line out of Washington will be labeled a threat. Eventually they may find themselves carted to one of the concentration camps which Halliberton (Dick Cheney’s old company) has constructed for $385 million. But that may take a while. In the meantime, we can expect lots of other, less dramatic developments. Indeed, some of these are already happening. Here they are, listed in order of severity.
1. Self-censorship. Those who have previously tried to get the truth out no matter out become more reticent and prone to equivocation when reporting on “hot” issues.

2. Topic-avoidance. They start avoiding certain “hot” issues that they feel are most likely to get them into trouble.

3. Response to harassment. A few incidents of mild official harassment cause certain blogs to start watering down their content, or pulling down content in response to harassment.

4. Blacklisting. The officials start censoring content on a case-by-case basis, blocking or shutting down certain internet sites that they consider seditious.

5. Blocking communications. The officials start dealing with the “hard cases” of uncooperative individuals who remain, shutting down their communications by disabling their cell phones, shutting down internet access, and by imposing travel restrictions so that the “hard cases” are forced to remain in places where they can be watched.

6. Detention. Those found to be truly uncooperative, who try to circumvent the restrictions, are rounded up and shipped off to the above-mentioned camps.

This may seem like a dire prognosis, but actually I just want to present a relatively complete list of public measures for your consideration. Yes, there will be a few “hard cases” who will insist on getting right in the face of Washington officialdom in futile hopes of somehow affecting the political process or winning over a few of their compatriots. But at some point such individuals become indistinguishable from people with mental problems. That is because if you live in the US, actually know how the political system there operates, and still think that the US is a democracy, then you DO have a mental problem. You can’t have it both ways: either you buy into the official propaganda, or you don’t.

Also, it bears pointing out that the vast majority of people in the US are quite happy listening to Washington’s propaganda, be it from Fox or NPR, don’t consider it propaganda, and have been conditioned to consider anyone who attempts to tell them the truth to be tin hat-wearing conspiracy theorist nut case. And that means that tin hat-wearing conspiracy theorist nut cases have a role to play. They are important to have, in the same way that a village idiot is important to have, so that children can learn what idiocy looks and sounds like. So, why bother sending them to a concentration camp?

And so it seems likely that the village idiots… ahem, truth-tellers will remain free-range for the time being, unless they really lose it and start tilting at windmills. But then that becomes a bona fide mental health issue.

Unless, of course, full-on war hysteria breaks out. In that case, while the external goons are busy pretending to be “not winning, not losing” but somehow “keeping America safe” in yet another wretched part of the world, the internal goons have to be kept busy. Rounding up undesirables would give them something to do.

That’s the state of affairs in the United States and its subservient territories: Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand and a few others. But Washington’s propaganda isn’t working at all well in the rest of the world, be it Russia or China or Latin America. In all of these places, Washington’s message control has more or less failed. This is why the people in Washington are in a bit of a panic, and labeling internal dissidents as a “threat” is just them flailing in search of an answer. They can’t stop lying, and they can’t even pretend to rule the world if everyone knows that they are lying, so their only option is to try to squelch every voice except their own. They may succeed at this within the US (some would say they already have) but as far as the rest of the world—good luck!

An interesting development took place two days ago in my tiny patch of the world: an article I produced together with Club Orlov’s special Kiev correspondent Yu Shan which I ran a while ago, then translated into Russian, was published as an editorial by a major Russian online daily, VZGLYAD.ru. In itself this is not a surprise; my stuff does get published in Russian once in a while, and this is an excellent article, which is why I ran it and translated it. But what surprised me was the response it received. Below is a sampling from the over 100 comments it received in just two days. It is here to afford you a peak behind the one-way mirror through which the world views the US. I hope that you enjoy it.

Yu sonofabitch! I read it with delight from the first to the last word!

Bravo, yellow-skinned brother! I got real pleasure from reading this article!

This author deserves huge respect! This is written intelligently, with great feeling, sincerity and worry over the fate of the world. Without excessive sophistry or quick answers. I read it with pleasure. I wait for new articles. Congratulations on a successful debut!

A huge thank-you to the author! His diagnosis is very accurate. It’s all neuroses and other psychotic phenomena, mind games and products of an inflamed imagination… Voices in their heads. And nothing else.

Well, Vzglyad should be congratulated with a new, talented author.

It’s been a while since I read such an article in VZ. Excellent! Personally, it just bowled me over.

A stunning, emptional article! It struck me as a bit mussy, but its portrayal of reality is 100% spot on. Bravo!

A surprisingly deep, incisive article. This author is one clever cookie. Each paragraph is a gem of wisdom based on hard-won personal experience. Let him who came for the truth hear and see it.

A smart article. It’s especially accurate in noting and depicting the intellectual and moral degradation of the USA over the past 30 years. And if Hillary Clinton becomes the next president of USA, the process of degradation will enter its terminal phase.

A masterpiece!

An amazing article. Beautiful prose and, most importantly, all true…

This is a singular journalistic gem.

A brilliant journalist. The thoughts, the prose, the experience. Most of our journalists can’t operate at such a level

Magnificent!

Let’s not underestimate these bone-stuffed American scarecrows—they’ve bought up lots of media resources and the political elite! We must develop our culture, so that our young people naturally reject their rotten Western values.

Brilliant!

It’s been a long time since I read such honest emotions!

A good article! Bravo!

Written from the soul… You can feel it—it’s based on suffering…

Those feminists are frightening. Because they are malicious. You can’t win with such frightening women. Victory will belong to those whose women are happier and more beautiful.

This guy burns it up! Well noted about the Nuland clones. In any piece of Hollywood output, you can spot these biddies wearing a jacket over a low-cut blouse, with an insolent look, holding a folder (now a tablet) and babbling on about something on the go.

Thank you, Yu Shan… not even for the analysis of what’s happening, but just for your understanding that only Russia and China together can kill this American pest—the cancerous tumor of the planet.

The author accurately pointed out the malignancy of the feminization of American society and the origins of its “exceptionality.” American women, who have seized power in the American family, place their cult of “my baby,” who owns everything as a birthright, ahead of everything and everyone.

A very interesting article. You can feel, that this is coming from within, from hard-won experience, not from skimming the surface. Perhaps a bit mussy, but because of this it seems even more sincere.

Having worked with Yu on revising his first rough draft, and on translating the result into Russian, I feel some amount of ownership, and pride, in this piece. How much pride? Well, much more than I could have felt had it only been published in English, where the response it received was undeservedly muted. Did a major English-language periodical pick it up? Ha-ha-ha you’ve got to be kidding! Oh, and in light of what Paul Craig Roberts said, and that list of measures… Draw your own conclusions, but for Yu’s next piece I am contemplating skipping the step of producing the intermediate, English-language result, and have it go straight into Russian.

Orlov, is an agendist and braggart. I agree with much of what he says in this post. I am genuinely worried for the future of the U.S. and our civil liberties. Yet, Orlov acts like there is nothing wrong in China and Russia.

That is a clear distortion. It is plain and simple selective use of facts to paint a personal message that is anti-American IOW the guy is a genuine hypocrite. If you are not going to be fair, balance, and equitable then you are as bad as those you criticize. Orlov is a propagandist complaining about propaganda. Hooey

Russia is a mafia state run by the dictator Putin and his cabal of thieving oligarchs. China is a party dictatorship of corrupt old men who paint their heads black for the appearance of being immortally young and powerful.

These are looser countries who Orlov is praising. I am all for bashing the U.S. establishment but please don’t flatulate praise for Russia and China as being honest and righteous. Cat piss Orlov you chump.

  2. Speculawyer on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 2:49 pm

LOL, what a joke. Orlov has fallen hook, line, and sinker for Putin’s propaganda.

He is sooooo bitter these days that all his doom-saying has failed and that is Russia that collapsed AGAIN instead of the USA collapsing. Sorry, Dimitry.

And at least learn how to spell ‘Halliburton’.

  3. GregT on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 2:57 pm

    Spec,

Russia is not collapsing. The US Empire is.

  4. Speculawyer on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 3:02 pm

Sure GregT. It is the USA at war with a former NATO country not Russia at war with a former Warsaw pact country. It is the USA with a collapsing economy, not Russia suffering under sanctions, corruption, and oil price collapse. What ever you say.

  5. GregT on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 3:03 pm

    Davy,

What exactly is it that makes you believe that “Orlov acts like there is nothing wrong in China and Russia.”?

  6. GregT on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 3:18 pm

    Spec,

“The US Is Now Involved In 134 Wars”
Or none, depending on your definition of ‘war’.

    http://www.mintpressnews.com/us-now-involved-134-wars/196846/

Russia is not currently at War and her economy is not collapsing, no matter how hard the US tries to bring it down through financial terrorism.

So, we have a future of smaller and smaller concentration camps.

    That is logical.

    That is what concentration means.

    Smaller minds.

They laugh in concentration camps you know (On The Origin of Genieology).

Gail Tverberg, Kunster, Orlove, Gerald Celente, the automatic earth are made from the same mold. Narcissist entitled little pricks thinking that they are better then rest of us. These prople actually think that their opinion is worth something and us commoner are too stupid to form our own opinion. Blogging and youtube
are dying because these people are actually showing what they really are. Little con artists. They like to talk about economics because they know that they cannot be proven wrong because economics is not a real sciences.

  11. Davy on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 4:05 pm

Greg, I never hear a peep out Orlov on negative issues except American ones. Those peeps are generally exaggerated. Some discussions are excellent but flawed by his overall anti-American agenda elsewhere. He is a fully pro-Russian propagandist.

  12. Davy on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 4:11 pm

Spec, being fair to Russia they are far from collapsing. Russia does have significant challenges ahead if oil prices don’t recover per POD ETP that short’s Hills group talks about. Russia is a great nation despite its leadership. The U.S. is in a similar situation but culturally further along in decay but not much.

  13. GregT on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 4:30 pm

    Well Davy,

Regardless of how you feel about Orlov himself, it is good to hear that you ” agree with much of what he says in this post.”

Like the man or not, Orlov speaks the truth.

  14. Makati1 on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 11:13 pm

GregT, there are Russophobes (n. noun – One who fears or dislikes Russia or its people or culture) among us. They have been totally brainwashed by the Ministry of Propaganda, fully supporting the topic of the article. When you are inside the MSM Iron Wall, you are constantly bombarded with lies and BS 24/7/365. The current ‘bad guys’ are China and Russia so all the ‘news’ has an ‘anti’ slant/spin.

Interesting that the only real bad guys since 2001 are those who refuse to kneel at the emperor’s feet, and have the nuclear/financial/diplomatic balls to stand firm.

    Russia
    China
    Venezuela
    Iran
    N.Korea

The emperor is foaming at the mouth in frustration.

  15. Davy on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 11:45 pm

Good prose Makster. Your propagandist word salad may be better than the Davy Doomer world salad I preach on a daily basis. Yet, it is the same old menu with nothing new to spice it up. You are a broken record Makster just copying and pasting a redundant message. I do it with my Davy doom and I admit it but my doom is not an agendist message of hate like yours. My message is a warning for a coming collapse.

By your own definition Makster you are Americanphobic practicing the same thing you are preaching against. IOW a hypocritical propagandist complaining about propaganda. I think what your real phobia is the admission of a failed life in the US. I love your list of your super hero countries. Nice postcard countries to support your message with.

  16. GregT on Sun, 26th Apr 2015 11:57 pm

    Davy,

Most good people everywhere only want to live their lives in Peace. From what I know of you, I would consider you to fall into this category. Americans (or any other nationalities) are not the problem. It is the people that support corrupt governments and institutions that are. I find it interesting that you have separated yourself somewhat from your family, but still support the most evil oligarchy that has ever existed on this planet. (IMVHO) Millions of people’s lives are being destroyed right now, today, as we speak, by the US military industrial complex. I personally cannot support American military adventurism. How can you?

  17. Davy on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 12:25 am

Greg, I am supporting the truth. The truth says there is more to it than what the anti-Americans claim. There is a messed up world of another 6.68BIL people who are part of a global world doing the same shit as the American but on a smaller scale. The countries of praise by the anti-Americans are frankly filthy regimes with nothing praiseworthy. The anti-American Agendist lay all the blame at the feet of the Americans while all the other criminal countries are set free and considered harmless.

The problem with anti-Americans on this site is they do not allow you to talk fair and balanced. They are just like George Bush said “either you are with us or against us”. If you are going to be anti-American you must buy into the meme that all the world’s problems are from America. No other nation is causing any problems. That’s some stinky cat piss.

OK, anti-Americans here I go again taking the stand under oath and saying “I Davy the Doomer do agree with you anti-Americans that the US is the greatest danger to world peace at the moment”. OK, feel better guys? “Nope” they say. This is because that is not enough for anti-Americans. The oath has to be a total capitulation to anti-Americanism. To be an anti-American means every and all problems in the world are sourced from America. That is what has to be said to be accepted into the anti-American hall of BS.

Greg, let’s leave my family out of the conversation because they are not relevant to it. It would be an invasion of their privacy to describe their good and bad. Yea, they are 1%er but they are also people I know and love. I am working on them with gentle doom and making some progress. At least they do allot of philanthropic work. It could be worse.

  18. dave thompson on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 12:34 am

I like Orlov and what he has to say.

  19. GregT on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 12:45 am

    Davy,

I am not anti-American. I am anti-murder for the benefit of the few, at the expense of the many. Here we are in the 21st century, and we still haven’t learned much. Killing innocent people is wrong. Supporting corrupt regimes that kill innocent people is also wrong. Identifying ones self with a group of people that kill innocent people isn’t any different.

You are a human being Davy. Not an American, a Chinaman, a Korean, a German, or a Russian. You are identifying yourself with other peoples’ labels.

My apologies for the family comment. I meant no disrespect. I was only trying to draw a parallel. Like I have said before, I am positive that if we lived in the same community, we would be good friends, and could work together to achieve common goals. I believe that we have mostly the same set of values. Where we differ immensely? I do not support my government the way that you do. I do not identify myself with other people, especially not people that could care less about my other fellow human beings.

  20. antiwarforever on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 3:19 am

The official medias are brainwashing us, that’s the dire truth, wether you agree with Orlov (I happen to agrre, mostly, with him) or not.
Now a lot of people (the “silent majority” do accept this brainwashing as soon as they can go on living their relatively comfortable life in our affluent societies. They believe then trade -off is worth it. But a minority of oppenents are dissenting and are not following the flock. I don’t have the courage to be one of them, but I do admire them, in my view they are the last idealists, they are “the salt of the eart” who are risking sometimes their cvery liberty to oppose the official “truth”. I will always be on their side, through thick and thin!

  21. theedrich on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 3:54 am

While we Americans have very many and very grave problems, I would by no means want to trade places with any Russian. Their national culture consists in destroying oneself with vodka, and their politicians are far more murderous than ours. Decent, sober and intelligent Russians are exploited and oppressed by a culture system of criminality that never emerged from the Dark Ages.

  22. Davy on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 7:28 am

Greg, you are anti-American establishment and pro-North American. That is why I like you. We just approach it at different angles that allows good friends to butt heads. I admit to flag waiving but it is in defense of the truth which is not black and white on this subject. Russia and China as examples are terrible regimes. China is killing the world in over population and over consumption. Russia is a mafia regime run by a de facto dictator embracing militarism and economic exploitation of his people. Somehow that is ok with the anti-Americans because these nations are anti-American and offer a front against the hated American establishment.

The American establishment has turned neo-fascist with tendencies of the partnership of industry and politics. This offer a prime target for criticism and rightly. This trend is going global so I am calling out this whole globalism as part of the same problem. There is no decoupling and the diminishment of the US in this global. The diminishment of the US economically and politically will have dangerous consequences and unintended consequences. Any kind of decay at that level is dangerous. This decay will likely lead to collapse of BAU. This is now a global trend with all nations embracing the US trends in differing degrees and policy approaches. All nations are in are approaching this same decay because BAU is decaying.

I am going to call out anti-Americanism for the reasons Thee mentioned in his comment. The rest of the world is engage in the same activities just not on the scale of the US. The US is just so far off the charts with the economic positioning, military industrial complex, and military capability. Yet, as long as the anti-Americans are going to preach the hate of much of what is American and not acknowledge what is also the same trend globally I am going to call them out. That is my nature. Anti-Americanism is not being truthful and it is dangerous in this regard.

The US establishment is the biggest threat to world peace but several other countries are close and closing in as the US diminishes. The once upon a time US hegemony is over but this decay has still left strong remnants. This is a multi-polar world we now live in and a multipolar economic system completely interconnected at the top where all the power is. At the bottom all the diverse global locals have been delocalized and are completely dependent on the global BAU for food, fuel, and resources to support the infrastructure of that arrangement.

I am preaching against this global phenomenon at many levels but most profoundly in regards to an imminent contraction of some kind. This I see within 10 years but likely within 5 and capable anytime. This contraction will mean less with less consumption and population decline. This paradigm shift will be ugly, painful, and dangerous. There will be a pole shift from growth to descent with corresponding changes to basic systematic trends. This will be a chaotic affair with economic abandonment, dysfunctional networks, and irrational policies making the whole process volatile and unpredictable. Stability will be hard to find if it is ever found in a civilized state. We may fall to Stone Age levels if we don’t get our act together and soon.

  23. Davy on Mon, 27th Apr 2015 7:30 am

Greg, no offense taken on the family. They are 1%ers and deserve some of this blame at that level but on the level of individuals they are good people. It is tough being a back to the land permaculture doomer. I preach a message that is significantly different than any of the main stream political persuasions. I especially find fox news right wing religious fundamentalists irritating. My family being 1%ers tend to connect with some of that but not all. The liberals, bought off greenies, and moral high grounders are not much better being bought into the BAUtopian meme of progress and growth. All have that hopium we as a global people will use technology and markets to find solutions to all our problems if we are patient and the other side gives into their views. The whole system and the global system is just one big racket of corruption, manipulation, and exploitations for the advancement of a few at the expense of the many.
