CALGARY, Alberta, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Nexen Inc said on Friday it had temporarily shut production at the Buzzard field in the North Sea after storms damaged the upper section of one of three power generation turbine exhaust stacks.

Nexen said a full examination of the damage to the platform, which produced 177,000 barrels of oil a day in the third quarter, will take place when the weather improves but said it did not expect production to be down "for an extended period".

Nexen, Canada's No. 4 independent oil producer and explorer said in a statement that the platform, which began producing oil less than a year ago, can be safely operated at full output with just two turbines.

On Thursday, ConocoPhillips closed North Sea platforms producing 140,000 barrels a day because of storms.
