I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Many of us very frugal PO types are still on dial-up and there is nothing we hate worse than being surprised by someone's browser crashing embedded high bandwith content. Why is it so bad to just provide links (along with high bandwidth warnings)?
I miss usenet. It delivered the same amount of info with orders of magnitude less bandwith. As we power down the internet in the future we may have to rediscover efficient ways to carry on online conversations just as we will have to rediscover walkable community design. _________________ The battle to preserve our lifestyle has already been lost. There is a new BBCode called youtube where you can just put in the unique ID of the clip and it will handle the embed for you. The admins should see if they can implement that.

how do you embed just the Youtube video, in this case with dimensions 425x355 ?
Fixed it for you PF.
Embedding Youtube videos is a two-step process at this point. First thing you have to do is grab the 'Embed' link from the page displaying the video (some videos have this disabled; you can still get the link however, but it's a more complicated process requiring the use of a packet sniffer to capture the raw data as you're streaming the video to your computer). Paste it temporarily into something like Notepad. It will look something like the following:
Next, you want to look for the part of that link that shows " <embed src= " (I highlighted it in red in the code snip above), followed by the actual URL of the video. Copy just that URL (without the quotes that surround it), then paste that into the first box that pops up when you click on the video embedding button in the message editing pane (looks like ---> ). Click OK, then two more windows will pop up in succession where you can set the video width and height.
That's it! Be sure to click 'Preview' before you actually submit your post to make sure everything's right... _________________ "It means buckle your seatbelt, Dorothy, because Kansas? Is goin' bye-bye... "

with the tweak suggested by TWilliam - THANKS, TW !!! - now when the page loads there is just an image, so it shouldn't auto-load the video. i hope that's more bandwidth-friendly.
i started with USENET in about 1992, at the urging of a community organizer friend & computer customer in SF.
i really liked the way USENET was. i used to sell computers on various bulletin boards (including BMUG) and also ba.computers.forsale (something like that).
don't browsers have a way to disable the loading of certain image file types ?
