There are so many threads about financial meltdown in the next week(s).
I guess in Australia we'll have some weeks more.
But what are you doing right now?
Until now we did everything to pay the mortgage down very quickly, but maybe at the moment may be better buying some stuff which will be unaffordable in future? We usually do not have lots of cash at home.
What do the board members outside of the USA expect/prepare? |

If it is happening today than there is nothing to be done but watch... and enjoy that expensive imported beer/wine in the fridge/cellar... it is the last you'll see for a while. _________________ "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."

I was thinking today = Monday for aussies, Asia and Europe already.... even though it is a few hours away in North America...
I am going to get a good night sleep, and not think about it until tomorrow because there is nothing to be done and we (probably) won't really know anything until after I get up.

I wonder how long it will take for that to happen, assuming the worst case scenario of a total meltdown on the markets on Monday? Obviously shops won't INSTANTLY be out of Liquor on Tuesday (except in the Financial District).
How long does it take for the economic collapse to hit Main Street in full force?

Something to think about too will be the tight gas supplies the next few weeks combined with whatever fallout there is from Lehman and co. falling apart.
High gas prices have a way of upsetting people and could compound an already bad situation. _________________

BT (and others), this is starting to amaze me. We have a few really nasty GOM storms striking into the very heart of the nations oil processing infrastructure. We have government actions certain to cause inflationary pressure. We have warfare flaring up in Nigeria and elsewhere... and nation after nation joining import land. Yet oil is dropping in price almost daily.
What gives??? _________________ Everything is Impermanent. Shakyamuni Buddha |

A huge drop involuntary drop in oil demand by US refiners, at least twice as much as the fall in GOM oil output. _________________ It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting. |

A transition from cash is trash to cash is king, with an emphasis on deleveraging.
It was easy to get credit with which to buy commodities of every sort. Now those debts must be repaid - hence commodities must be sold to raise cash.
And, then, there is the prospect of decreased economic activity with the implication of reduced demand for oil.
Not to worry. Low energy prices will spark a recovery. Which will be slaughtered in its infancy by renewed price increases.

Well...we have lot's of food in storage and a good water supply....that trumps the money we have tied up in the market=nothing!
Here's an old Lee Hazlelwood tune set to a short film....kind of fitting:
