Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Global supplies tumble, sparking protests, hurting aid agencies
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine activists warn about possible riots. Aid agencies across Asia worry how they will feed the hungry. Governments dig deeper every day to fund subsidies.
A sharp rise in the price of rice is hitting consumer pocketbooks and raising fears of public turmoil in the many parts of Asia where rice is a staple.
Part of a surge in global food costs, rice prices on world markets have jumped 50 percent in the past two months and at least doubled since 2004. Experts blame rising fuel and fertilizer expenses as well as crops curtailed by disease, pests and climate change. There are concerns prices could rise a further 40 percent in coming months. …

ive seen so many rice shortage threads in the past month

yes a 50% rise in a few months on the main crop of a bilion people would spark concern anywhere

however the fun times still lie ahead

the real 'concern' that governments have is that they'll be deposed if there are hundreds of thousands of starving asians not getting their daily rice fix

its already starting in other places with other grain prices, but lordy help asia if they have a weak rice harvest

rice sucks anyway, its pathetic so many of our species live on these grains as their primary food; its a sidedish at best

grains convert to pure glucose in the gut, and also leech nutrients, thats why grain-dependent populations are so succeptible to disease epidemics and diabetes

personally ill be glad if we cut down on the grain-eating population, maybe people will starve to the point where they'll eat each other....mmm tastes like pork

seriously we are in such overshoot if we depend on cultivated weeds to feed 1/2 the world population, i dont know how to make it any clearer

I heard about this yesterday. I drove 36 miles (one-way) to Lewisburg WV and bought all the rice Save-A-Lot had (160 pounds). I got the 48 pounds of blackeye peas they had, too. Then I made the rounds of the supermarkets and Wal-Mart to get the rest of the blackeye peas in Lewisburg, and I came away with a total of 160 pounds of those too. Got the rice in one big trashcan and the peas in another. Now, I go to raid Marlinton. Arrgh me matey. Heh heh.

Jenab6, Better get that stuff in thefreezer for a couple weeks, or gas it with ntrogen, co2, argon, mig gas(75%AR, 25% co2), lest you find out the hard way how long it takes bugs to hatch in it.

Would that be for both the rice and peas, Patience?
I'm planning to get some 50 lb bags of rice on Monday.

Does this apply to all types of rice? I know it's not good for me, but I buy that uncle ben guys converted rice(like the taste), hoping the 'converted' process takes care of those little buggers...anyone know?
Cheers

I've found weevels hatching in 3 bags out of the hundreds I've bought. It might be that winter temperatures killed the bugs in the others. The three infested bags were removed, bugs mostly picked out and discarded, the rice eaten.
