Rolling in on two wheels
Oil companies are among the Houston-area employers encouraging workers to make their commutes by bicycle

Some of the world's biggest gas peddlers are encouraging their workers to pump the pedal.
Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips are among the Houston-area employers trying to make it easier for employees to bike to work.
Workers already have enough excuses: potholes, impatient drivers and the Houston heat.
But some businesses are easing the commute for those who decide the exercise and reduced emissions make biking worthwhile. They're giving them locker rooms, shower areas and safe places to park their bikes.

Well at least the oil companies see the writing on the wall. _________________ Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Having never been to Houston I'm probably underestimating how bad it is. But I can talk about L.A., a town even the natives say you MUST have a car to live in. Los Angeles is the penultimate example of a city designed around the automobile.
But it is amazingly commutable by bicycle as a vanguard of workers are finding out from articles I’ve read in the L.A. Times, and a couple of group rides I’ve taken there.
Most commuters jump onto the choked freeways for their morning and evening transits to and from work, leaving parallel side streets free of traffic. Those streets with a lot of traffic on them are usually slow or stopped. You go up the sides, (or in my case in Orange County the side walks).
I would personally recommend a mountain bike for their maneuverability and ease of transitioning from street, to shoulder, to sidewalk, and the occasional pothole

Thanks for this article advancedatheist! I work for the largest telco in this country and I intend on sending a copy of it to the CEO to advise my company needs to offer the same! With a shower and locker room I would not mind commutting up to 15 miles each way on a bike each day, and I'm 52. In any case I vowed to myself I will not live farther from my work in the future than I can bicycle. _________________ Skeptical scrutiny in both Science and Religion is the means by which deep thoughts are winnowed from deep nonsense-Carl Sagan
