Well folks, after an exceptionally long hiatus, I am now back to share some very interesting stories, reflections and observations. It feels to me the timing is right.
In addition to a lot of serious family struggles over the last 2 years, I had major, major project work at the office, numerous personal goals to achieve and several trips inside and out of the United States. I took a lot of mental notes during that time specifically with Peakoil.com in mind.
So.....
I need to winnow thru the many things I let lapse here, get caught up on them and then tackle the Expert-Sages Forum. I have been more frequently receiving emails from people asking to post admin-type bulletins. I will attend to them as well.
I look forward to chatting with everybody again. I'm very interested in hearing the news and latest developments. _________________ --------------------------------

Aww, we've been thinking about you too.
Welcome back. I look forward to hearing your perspective (you were pretty much already gone when I first showed up three years ago). _________________ Riches are not from abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind. |

Welcome back! I've trawled the archives a fair bit and it's a shame when the EnviroEngrs and Antimatters and FathersofTwo have to move on; here's hoping they pop in as well at some point.

The Burj Dubai, I do believe. It's the tallest occupied structure ever constructed. Here's the wiki on it. Quite an amazing structure.
Edit: dino beat me to it by 2 minutes, which is the time I spent reading the wiki article. _________________ Everything is Impermanent. Shakyamuni Buddha

برج العرب (Burj ul-'Arab)
Quite a feat. Both of structure as well as stupidity. Amazing in both senses. It's already the tallest building in the world and it's not even completed yet!
Were you an engineer in the project or a side project (supplying water, etc.)? Or something to the far right or is that just for a visit?
Those palms only look a few years old. Maybe two? Are they yours? They could simply be part of the recent developments. Probably half the city has been built in the past 10 years. _________________ Riches are not from abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind. |

Al Burj Dubai is correct.
Wait until the rival-to-Disney "DubaiLand" goes in.
Two things are true about what was going on in UAE during my 2 week visit in May:
1) Oil money is accumulating there so rapidly they can't spend it fast enough.
2) The Sheikhs-In-Charge have this interesting ambition... to have the biggest and nicest everything. (you can read into that what you want to; it's likely right...)
And, if you're asking.... the answer is YES, there is a potent division between the more devout Muslims' idea of how things should be going and this insanely materialist pursuit that stands in its place. _________________ --------------------------------
