We cannot drill our way out of this oil crisis. Since 2000, oil companies working in the U.S. have doubled the number of wells drilled per year.
Although increased drilling has added new oil to the nation's supply, it has not done so fast enough to offset the terminal decline of existing fields.
We are going to have to import more of our oil. Period.

I was wondering how y'all are getting ready for the coming
"adjustment"....
I am taking the long term approach: when I go shopping I purchase 5 to 10 cans of beans/soup/stew and a litter or two of water. I believe that when the peak oil "SHTF", there will be little time to prepare, since everyone will be hitting up the local W almart for food items and emergency gear.
I have found that, by "stockpiling" a little at a time; I am able to build my cache without affecting my budget in a major way.
What are you doing in your area? Please describe State/City/Region.

Montana,
My family lives in San Antonio, TX. I am in the military and my wife just started a health care job.
I learned about some kind of global oil supply problem by doing research in 2002, just before the military was planning to send me to Saudi Arabia to support the invasion of Iraq. However, it wasn't until 2004 that I learned that this oil supply problem was commonly termed as "peak oil".
Since then, I have been an avid reader of the peak oil website. I have made minor preparations so far in regards to peak oil.
The main thing is to educate my wife on what to expect in the future that way we are both on the same sheet of music. I drive a hybrid car and she drives a fuel efficient car. We would like to get an SUV, but I advised to wait 2 years because there should be a plug in electric option by then once gasoline prices hit 4.50 - 5.50 dollars per gallon. Why buy a gasoline-only car today when that car will become obsolete in the near future?
When it comes to housing, I am actually planning to move us farther out of town in about two years. This will actually result in a slightly longer commute using more oil. One reason is to get us away from encroaching crime. Illegal immigration is rampant in this part of the country. There are a lot of unemployed losers roaming the streets here (even in the day time) looking to steal a car or break into your home. I speak from recent and repeating personal experience. I believe crime will only increase with higher energy and food costs, combined with a down and out population, and decreased government services (police).
I will turn our current home into rental property and be able to break even on the carrying costs. I also like the idea of moving out of town and having 1 or 2 acres of land to plant trees on and build a shed. I would like to stockpile the shed with an emergency reserve of gasoline to operate our cars.
Another short term step that I am taking is saving and investing. I am currently invested in oil service related companies. I am also trying to sell another one of my rental propertys now and I will be plowing all of the proceeds into oil related businesses. I made decent money on two prior sales of rental property, but it looks like I may have to let this property go at the same price I paid for it four years ago. Hell, I may even have to take a loss because of the financial implosion going on.
For the long term after I retire from the military, I hope to be able to buy rural property for my family. That will be in about 8 years (2016). I would like to get into farming like my uncles and grandparents all did.
