Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

This is going to be a catastrophe of the scale the US has never seen before not even in Katrina. This is biblical.

Maybe in more ways than one. Did you read the posts in the blog? One in particular scared the beejeebers out of me.

Copied from the blog:

Why has no news source reported anything on the possible implications of Ike on the BSL-4 (Biosafety Level-4) lab at the Nat. Inst. of Allergy & Infectious Disease at U.T. Medical Branch in Galveston. BSL-4 Labs deal with the most dangerous and contagious (think ebola, plague, anthrax)and should never have been built in hurricane potential Galveston. This certainly adds another dimension to the concept of catastrophic. Some media attention is surely deserved, if only to bring the situation to light. The following URL is a chart listing both Galveston labs. LINK- read the 4th and 9th entries

Lights still on in West Houston (surprisingly). The wind is beginning to stay loud - public briefing on local tv about basic post-storm stuff (water safety, power lines, etc..). Only 1 million expected to lose power...

Galveston appears to be getting pounded.

This sounds like the first chapter of a Michael Crichton Novel....

Cripes. Mods, delete please! Confused

But never fear - as an "Expert" Cool with 3k+ posts I assure all that everything will be fine, not to fear. Also I investigated the matter a little further:

Construction Schedule

Quote:
As of August 2008, construction of the GNL is approximately 99% complete! The facility remains on track and on budget.

The GNL achieved "substantial completion" in early August, with final completion projected within the next 30 days.

Finishing touches and final checks are ongoing in the building's interior. As these final checks are completed, we will begin delivering equipment and furnishings to the building.

Between August and September, we expect the majority of the laboratory equipment will be brought into the facility. Researchers and staff are also projected to begin moving into the facility during this time.

Preparations are on track and well underway for the GNL's formal dedication ceremonies on November 11, 2008. Check this site again soon for further information on the dedication ceremonies.

Faqs

Quote:
What are the dangers if a hurricane strikes the area?
The GNL is among the strongest and most heavily reinforced of all structures in the region. It is designed to meet hurricane building codes. Despite its structural integrity, plans are in place to shut down and secure all laboratory operations if a hurricane landfall is predicted near Galveston. This shut-down and decontamination can be done quickly, with all work in the facility ceasing, the lab locked down, and all biological and chemical material placed into secure storage and all the agents rendered noninfectious or destroyed.
What happens when the power fails?
As with all critical areas on the UTMB campus (which also is home to hospital facilities), the Galveston National Laboratory will have primary power plus independent backup power provided by multiple generators that are tested regularly.

So there isn't any equipment in the building to handle pathogens in the first place. Or so goes my blithe assumptions, anyway... Crying or Very sad

Geraldo, " Diminica, How long until the eyewall is right over me ? "

Diminica, " The eye is 50 miles away from you and is traveling 13 mph, so it should be over your head in an hour or hour and a half "

It gets better, Arma: Ike Lashes Galveston; Geraldo : ‘The Roof Just Came Off Hooters!’ That was an hour after a seawall wave knocked him on his butt, which someone reported here earlier. If he's a cat with nine lives, he's one of those really mangy alley types.

20' storm surge in Galveston with a few hours until the eye passes and high tide moving in. Could we see a 30' surge ? It's 3' over the 17 ft sea wall as we speak.

Nice detective work Dude. Love the Avatar.

I found this weather forum where locals are posting updates by parts of town.

The eye center is 50 miles away. The eye currently has a diameter of 50 miles or a radius of 25 miles. So it would have to move 25 miles for the person to enter the eye. So would take about 2 hours to enter the eye or 60 to 90 minutes to enter the eye wall.

Well, she didn't say the center. But I hear ya. Makes more sense now.

And the most extreme wind conditions are found near the eye perimeter, which isn't a skinny line but rather an are of extreme turbulence extending outward some distance from the inner eye 'wall'. Therefore, for those areas experiencing the eye, maximum winds could start in an hour or so, plus of minus a bit depending on a host of assorted factors.

I think I'll go watch the weather channel for awhile.

Read it while it's still up. The stream from KTRK just went dead. Their site's working, though. Offices are SW of dowtown Houston. KRIV's anchor says the lights have gone off in the studio.

Is there any confirmation of this yet? Any video?
