L-gas (about 20% less energy) goes at 0,69/kg in the Netherlands. That price is now used at every pump (we have only about 10 though). 1 kg ~1 liter of diesel.

I've seen it $1.25 a litre myself here in Canada. I've heard of prices as high as $1.36/L in Montreal (I don't know whose Cheerios they pissed in to deserve that...).
$1.25/L CDN = 0.81/L
It's hard to say what that is a gallon US... so many things don't line up... our gallon was imperial, so it's bigger than a US gallon; the dollars are close, but not exact... the conversion between litres and gallons... Let's have a go...
$1.25/L CDN = $4.73/US gallon CDN = ...oh, $4.73/US gallon US, too. The CDN$ is worth 99.8’ US this morning. Well, that's handy. _________________ I can has cheezburger?

At those kinds of prices, I don't see how you folks are still driving cars like this is no big deal...is Europe experiencing any sort of demand destruction at all? I suppose your higher salaries then we have in the US + free / low-cost health care is helping the billfolds and pocketbooks go a bit further than they would here at those kinds of prices, plus shorter driving distances, etc.
Nice thing about Europe, though, it's much easier to get by without a car than it is here in the States...can anyone envision a car-free Europe by 2025? I can. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

I'm not sure about the higher salaries, might be true but we also pay a hell of a lot of taxes. But no, i'm not seeing any demand destruction happen here as of yet. Everybody is talking about it though, blaming the oil companies, oil-sheiks or the government (3/4 of our gasoline price is taxes). But everybody keeps on driving like everything is normal. A few friends of mine, young guys, are talking about getting a new bigger car. And its not like they are rich, they're both 20 years old, still in college and they can afford the gas-prices.
But i guess because Europe is smaller and our cars get on average better mileage, we can still hang in there. Projections are we could see 2/L (12$/gallon) by the end of this year if the price increase of oil keeps on going.

True. Public transportation is decent, at least in the Netherlands it is. I hope that because of the high gasoline-price people will leave the car more often and take the bike or take a walk. I don't think many will sell their car and switch to public transportation altogether. Not much is said about changing lifestyle. Everybody says things like nuclear fusion and electric cars will save us. It's an improvement though because a while ago nobody would say we needed to be saved. _________________ The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

From my original post, the price for 95 has gone from close to 4 PLN per litre to almost 4.80 at the local Tesco. I think that is around $8.09/gallon. My wife recently bought an old beater Fiat that runs on regualr gas and has been converted to run on LPG also which is less than half the price of regular gas. I am going to convert the old Volvo soon too. At these prices, payback should be less than 10 months for the amount of driving we do.
We have also bought bikes for the trip to the local store in the village. _________________ Remember, with globalisation "everyone is a winner" in the "race to the bottom". - rogerhb
