There are major problems with that idea. One of the biggest is that the atmosphere is not static...It would quickly dissipate around the globe....which could reflect light worldwide. How would you get it into the atmosphere? How much would it take to make a difference...and what would you use?

The above link is a good introduction albeit a bit technical. I don't really know of any good links and textbooks since I picked this up through journal articles. A google search for "baroclinic life cycle" will lead you to article links and they require payment unless you have access to a university account and then you can get PDFs for free. The Journal of Atmospheric Science is a good source (e.g. Magnusdottir and Haynes 1996).

Ironically, the sulfate pollution coming from Norilsk has been keeping the Arctic regional climate cooler than it would have been otherwise. SO2 will work but it needs to be periodically injected. If you put it into the stratosphere where it has the most efficiency then you end up mangling the ozone layer.

So I guess my original geo-engineering skepticism was right. That basically places me back at doom.

I do wonder, as (or "if") the enormity of what is occurring starts to dawn on people, how much pressure there will be to try out some such scheme.

Most folks don't know the daily_images folder is accessible. There you can find the daily and record concentration images. Interesting / scary to flip back and forth between them and see where the ice melted then and now and the relative ice concentration. And yes it looks like we will exceed the 2007 record melt.

The polar temperature distribution sure make it clear tundra released Methane is starting to cause localised heating and maybe undersea releases are causing the sea based localised heating events. Overall this is not looking good.

"Tale of the tape" at Cryosphere Today has an uptick today. That puts us back to where we were last year at this point, as far as I can see, instead of slightly ahead. But again, that's just coverage. We are clearly far below last year for total ice mass.

Next few days should be interesting (in the worst meaning of that term).
