How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

Huge group boxes ... heck no. The druggies would find them easy pickin's.

A few ideas. How about weekly delivery. Ban ALL advertising mail, especially the political trash. Raise letter rates high enough to offer a real incentive for people to do their bill paying electronically.

I mean seriously. This system can't possibly survive for long as it's currently structured. I receive nothing that can't be put off for a week or two and junk mail is a perfect example of gluttony.

It's been suggested that it is very inefficient for the post office to run around the country delivering and picking up mail. It would be much more efficient if everyone would pick up and drop off their mail at a central location, such as Bismarck, North Dakota.

It already takes 5 days for mail to get to Oklahoma City from Los Angeles. Dont delay it even more.

How about just completely ending all home mail delivery and just pick it up yourself. Here in rural Alberta we pick it up when ever we make it to town ourselves. Not even a rural mailbox. End the waste end the home personal delivery of mail.

I'd like to see UPS and FedEx implement something like this. Technically you can have stuff "held for pickup" with both, but they couldn't handle everyone doing it at the present time. But that would presumably save them a lot of gas money.

Ironically, while both are fantastic at tracking a package as it moves across the country from a vendor to your doorstep, with their current setup, when it is held for pickup in their warehouse they both have a difficult time locating it.

How about every other day everything. In other words, every other day is a day off for everyone.

Back in the fifties, they were predicting that in the future we'd only be working about 10 hours a week. If you think about it, what's the mad rush? It'll be there tommorow. We have huge factory farms growing our food and producing huge surpluses (when they aren't making ethanol with it.) Why are we working so hard?

I think the explanation is simple; about 20% of the population does most of the work. The rest are either living off dividends, laying in the street, pumping out babies, etc. Most of the population lives off those who work and produce value, invention, inovation or just make sure the toilets are clean. The rich don't work everyday, the poor don't, it's the middle class who is expected to take care of all the babies.

Trash collection.

Pardon the minor hijack, but we have four separate 7 mpg diesel trucks roaming our city every day each stopping weekly at each house and business. It's insane. One's for trash, another is paper/plastic, another is yard waste, and the fourth is metals.

How much longer can this wasteful activity last?

If I received no junk mail, I'd get actual mail 4x month, slightly more if I've ordered something from Amazon. As you suggest, all of my bills automatically debit my bank account and I've turned off getting a paper copy for all that allow it (all of them except for my insurance co). What I do get are endless credit offers daily. I could probably heat a small cabin in a cold climate all winter with the credit offers alone.

Wanting an efficient postal sysytem might be asking too much. I'm all for less frequent delivery, but I'm sure the postal workers' unions will not share the same opinion.

Lots of places in Montana, there is no mail delivery. You have to get a PO box. The mail carrier just walks down the row stuffing mail in the boxes. You decide how often you come get it.

You can already opt-in to it if you want, (you always have been able to). Instead of your regular address being:

Mr John Doe
1234 Fake Street Unit #18B
Anytown ID 83843-1829

Change it to read the following:

Mr John Doe
GENERAL DELIVERY
Anytown ID 83843-9999

The mail will be held at the post office for up to 30 days before it is expunged. You will have to pick up the mail yourself at your main postal distribution center, (usually the largest one in town).
