How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

I agree with you about Drew's avatar...indeed. Wink
I think many Americans see Hugo as a good president because our own leader seems so pathetic in comparison (I mean, really...). I've personally heard both good and bad things about him...and it's hard for me to verify from a distance what's really true.

Actions speak louder than words, however. It does seem to me that Chavez is at least trying to help his country (unlike our leaders here, who are only interested in their own personal ascension). But there probably is some validity to your viewpoint as well, I guess.

Just be glad, though, that you didn't have a Latin version of George W. Bush as president of Venezuela for the last eight years! Mad

Quote:
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Saturday that his government could afford to buy some of the International Monetary Fund's gold reserves as the Washington-based lender faces hard times.

Chavez raised that idea with a chuckle as the IMF, the lender of last resort for countries in trouble, considers trimming costs by selling off some of its gold reserves.

"Look at how the U.S. empire must be in unimpeded decline, that the International Monetary Fund ... is selling its crown jewels," Chavez said during a speech at a military parade.

"The International Monetary Fund is selling what gold it has left to be able to pay salaries," Chavez said. "We could give a loan to the Monetary Fund. ... We could buy some gold bars. ... I think they're selling gold cheap."

You see ....... that´s the problem with each other´s "blisters". Even though I am aware the one from that north american country is an real Major Leaguer and has got the whole planet all screwed up, our little blister here is right on his way to become an regional Tripple "A" player and without the consent of my people but using our alleged wealth to achieve it.

Please, read throughout this rather long yet very enlightening article. Highly recommended in order to get a better glipse/understanding of our current situation.
Believe me Magus, guys, as far as venezuelans is concerned, it is right in our feet, where it hurts the most. dontknow

What? Garbage and potholes?

Boy, it's a good thing we live in the civilized world, where things like that don't happen...

..... yeah, what a drag, ain´t it??

Well, at least you are such a small country with such small population .....

In turn, look at us, we are as big as 20 Million people, with such small national budget and huge territory ..... and, and per capita ....... and your president gave the chineese people the stunning sum of what, 25000 bucks for this last shake ....... as aid, well, I really I see what you mean!!!

I've seen places that look like that here in Australia after a good storm.
Up until about 15 years ago the Grand Mothers neighbourhood in modern Finland had all dirt roads. After some rains you couldn't drive faster than 30km cause it would be so bumpy. This was in suburbs about 5-6km from the city centre.

Anyway, those pictures don't really prove anything as they don't show deterioration. i.e. they don't show how things were nice and pretty before Chavez and then suddenly deteriorated once he came to power. Even looking at individual places wouldn't be right as one particular place has deteriorated whilst other places have improved.

So we're supposed to believe that nothing looked like that in Venezuela BEFORE Chavez, is that it? Uh, sorry, I ain't buying.
If things are so bad, why does he keep getting elected? Why was there no popular support for the coup? Why did the recall fail? If he's such a monster, why did he put the changes to the constitution to a vote, and accept the verdict when the people voted it down? Instead of trying to convince us the people are being destroyed, why don't you address the point that the people themselves don't seem to agree with you?

Nickel ....... stick with me and you will have answers to ALL of your concerns/questions, ok?

To the question how things were before, I can only say he ONCE was elected to FIX those things up, TEN looong years ago ....... yet they haven´t ....... yet they´ve worsened ...... and yet huguito, thanks to the magic of his CNE (electoral council), will NEVER ,democraticallyI mean, leave to give the chance to other to try to fix ´em up, ok?

No, seriously, if he's so bad, why do they keep voting for him? If it's rigged, why didn't he win the referendum to extend the number fo times he can be president?

This version was confirmed to the Herald by an high military source regarding the pressures received by hugo from military sectors and from his own followers that, he should accept his defeat should such electoral tendency become definite.

Link
...... and guess who that high military eventually was, I gather out of the lights of the events and its timeline:
Quote:

Another thing related to this issue is the difference in the total numbers of the recall. While official numbers gave a very narrow margin for the momentary "defeat", I remember reading out of the same Miami´s paper the difference was way over One Million votes ...... and I am strongly inclined to believe such foreign report.
