It's a little game.
The US government must be seen to ask. After all, they represent the people and the people are asking.
The Saudi government must be seen to reply. A refusal to reply would appear evasive and would only invite further scrutiny. Depletion limits their reply to "no" but leaves the choice of words up to them. They say what they perceive to be least damaging to their interests - namely that there is currently no need for more oil.
In truth they have had the peak oil conversation privately many times before, and OPEC officials admitted everyone hit production ceilings back when oil hit $50 in mid-2005, but no-one picked up on those snippets as significant at the time. _________________ "The American people are watching the numbers climb higher and higher at the pump and they're waiting to see what the Congress will do." - George W Bush |

Hold on there cowboy....
You make it sound like a fact when in reality it is actually you assuming it has taken place. I have to call BS and hope you correct the record by removing the word "truth".
Unless you were in the meeting itself.

Oh spare me with this "you weren't in the room" crap.
This is the Bush and the Saud families we are talking about, that have had a close working relationship since WWII.
They didn't talk about raising output, they talked about managing the situation. They talked about the timing of the Iranian attack, and what how to manage the Jews.
Frankly I can see Bush and the Saud's as a means to greatly weaken Israel. They lead Israel to attack Iran, Iran retaliates and the US pummels Iran, but not before Israel takes a beating.
Very much the same ploy the US and Saud's pulled on Hussein when they prodded him into attacking Kuwait.

Perhaps Mr. Bush should stick to his words and place more of the US GDP into encouraging domestic growth in the energy sector of "our" country and not someone else's...reliance on something other than your own implies a lack of responsibility toward that which is your own...
Wake up, please, and smell the roses which are here! |

The timeline for long term build in KSA flow was announced in 2003 and official guidance on its status has been give four times since. I've reported on all of 'em.
Speculation of either an acceleration or lapse to the timing in their business plan by the Whitehouse & McPeaksters is futile on both their parts:

FreddyH, could you use typography/letters that are a bit bigger? ...and they look pixelated, maybe use a more legible type like Verdana. Thanks ...It's difficult to read them if I cann't type command(control)+ to make them bigger. _________________ anagami.net |

All you are doing is assuming that is what they talked about. You have no idea what they actually talked about except what is reported on.
I assume they talked about the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA playoffs because I assume they are both big fans and I assume they have vacation homes in LA.
Now you would delete the word assume and maybe throw in the phrase "the truth is..." and try to pass if off as fact.
You know what assuming does!!!

Assume? Hell, I know. You can call it 'assume' if you like, but I am going to allow myself some sloppiness this time. |
But remember 99.99999999999999% of oil conversation is NOT about peakoil. It is discussing politics, actual exploration, world needs, etc... Remember Bush comes from an oil family so he could probably spend hours talking about oil.
I think it is a stretch to assume they talked about peakoil.
However if Bush or SA comes out and actually declares peakoil then I will stand corrected.
