I just talked to a lobbyist from BP yesterday basically admitting that peak oil is here, that the major's energy businesses in carbon are going to be kaput within a short time frame, and that the major driver of CO2 now and in the forseeable future is Coal fired electrical plants, built at the rate of 1 every 2 days in China. Since LNG is dead in the water, their most promising Carbon-neutral technology is coke-fired plants with local or near-local sequestration in existing wells, or sodium-based scalable solar concentrators. Gas is at $4 and expected to go to $7 by fall. Its amazing how people will wring their hands right up to the very last minute.
I'm starting to think the 3rd world war is going to be fought over CO2 emissions, not oil or gas. All while driving energy use back down on a per capita worldwide basis by 80%. Are are going to have to pull back within our borders and send cruise missles into foreign CO2 generation plants to save the biosphere? This is going to trigger threats of nuclear retaliation. Are we going to hide behind our oceans and maintain a dominating military presense on 700 bases worldwide? Frankly, a strong US military force worldwide might be the best conventional tool to enforce GW and CO2e limits. It will not be an effective control to allow the UN or multinational agreements to enforce these laws. We are heading for military fascism, as opposed to market fascism, or else we will induce planetary die-off.
I have a message for global warming deniers: it is a mainstream issue taken seriously. The media is only being responsible by reporting what major companies with market caps in excess of $50 billion are taking seriously. Everything you know is wrong and the world is going to leave you in the dust. Sooner or later high energy price confluences are going to force major changes to your lifestyle commensurate with high-entropy societal wind-out. |

This jives with what a friend involved in Conoco Phillips new alternate energy research facility being built in Boulder told me. That facility will employ 1500+ and I think it will be the largest alternate energy facility in the country.

GW is a dead issue.
When gasoline is at 10 bucks a gallon and people are waiting in line for food - even the granola hysterical crowd - nobody is going to give a rat's ass about the temperature/climate in 100 years.
Nobody ever has, and nobody will again.
The only thing that has allowed douchbags like Al Gore to spend so much time and money schreeching about it has been . . .
oil.
And without oil you can't make berkenstocks, granola, and flaxseed oil as cheaply, and all those people with extra time on their hands will soon find something else to complain about.
GW is dead, long live fascism and starvation.

I'm not entirely sure that's true.
The Great Famine of 1315-1317: weather-related famine.
I think people aren't going to care about driving if they're starving to death. But the reality will most likely fall somewhere between.

This from the country that wouldn't sign Kyoto. If the US ever tries some kind of worldwide enforcement programme, you can be sure that the baddies would be selected based on their exploitable resources.

I thought that was a joke.
Please tell me no one is saying with a straight face that we should blow something up to prevent it from being burned because of the potential emissions.
I wonder how much pollution a cruise missile creates from production to detonation.

I think they mean like blowing up all the Hummers so they don't produce emissions.
Although it would be more effective to just blow up the Hummer factory. Where's that?
Or perhaps the corporate HQ that controls the Hummer factory might be a smaller target.
Just taking out the board of directors would probably do it. |

People give weed way too much credit. Meth and cocaine are much better drugs for delusional thinking. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's witnessed this first hand. Even alcohol does a better job after a long term addiction.
For the optimum levels of delusional thought patterns, think toxic, manufactured and addictive drugs (may also include pharmaceuticals), not benign, non-addictive, non-toxic plant products.

That's a totally interesting scenario that I hadn't thought of.
I interpreted it to mean blowing up for instance China's coal plants and such.
When the popular mood turns, I expect it to be quickly. And we are right on time for a mega crisis that involves warfare. |
