I've been thinking of firearms lately.
At one point they were a significant part of my daily life since I carried one (or two) almost 100% of the time. Over a few decades I became quite proficient in their use and remained proficient at all times.
But this proficiency has faded over the past few years since I no longer practice regularly. The last time I went through the drill was about a year and a half ago. I imagine my accuracy and skills have faded somewhat, but could be regained in a fairly short period if I wanted.
So I now have a bit of a dilemma. I no longer carry at all, although I'm legal if I want to, and I have no desire to practice anymore. Most performances occur at a very close range using very few firings so for 99% of scenarios I should be just fine. I had this stuff drilled into me year after year so hopefully it's all second nature.
The problem is that I just don't like having the darn things around anymore, but feel I have no choice. I keep them primarily so when some freak liberal Democrat gets elected president and decides we must all disarm I'll have a few to stash away so when the economy and state finally collapses and law means little we'll be able to protect ourselves somewhat.
Until then I feel burdened by all this firepower we keep on hand. _________________ Got Dharma?

Pack it properly and put it in a safe place in your attic and just try to forget about it. _________________

Somewhere along the line eb I gathered you were a tofu eating commie pacifist liberal.
See what happens when one places labels...

I am Pops, heh, at least you didn't add 'effete snob'. Anyhow, well, except for most of the 'liberal' part and only part of the 'pacifist' part since I'm a believer in self-defense. As a vegetarian, 'tofu eating' is a big part of my diet... and as a communist sympathizer... well, 'commie' is a part of it all too. So you're batting somewhere around .700 which ain't too bad!
As for the rest, I'll pm you, how's that. After kung fu practice tonight. _________________ Got Dharma?

EB, send them over to us. We'll take care of them until you feel you need them back. Really! _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."

| "Liberals" (in the modern sense) often carry guns. Take Senator Feinstein, for example. A strong advocate for gun control for everyone else, at one point she was the only person in San Francisco granted a concealed carry permit. You have to hand it to her though. Most liberal politicians have other people to carry the guns for them. |

That has always disgusted me. Many liberal (and conservative) elite want to ban things for everyone else, but not for themselves. An analogous example is Al Gore and his carbon footprint. Another one is George Bush, his war on drugs, and his cocaine usage in the past. Is there an anti-gay republican senator who doesn't have a gay relationship in his past? The hypocrisy is very thick at the top.
A Sacramento sheriff was issuing concealed license permits as political favors?

I have heard (so it's unsubstantiated) that about the only ones who have carry permits in Los Angeles are actors and politicians. |

I'm liking how we liberals show up from time to time with more under the shirt than a baggy and a bong.

I met a couple with permits in CA and all were either officers of the court or LEOs past - it amazed me those that were denied. _________________ Make a plan and work it: |

Could be matt, I know I went off on the label thing and probably derailed only the second gun thread allowed on PO.com.
Funny thing is I fit under so many flags I probably fit under none.

I'm a Canadian liberal. I like guns but I don't consider them for self-defense....yet.
I hate labels put on people too. Admittedly I find bashing political affiliations that are not mine as acceptable while I hate it when people bash liberals so I guess I'm as hypocritical as the rest. It may be human nature, I don't know.
I think it's important to remember that a lot of the rights, priviliges, and benefits to the working class, of all political stripes, in both our countries, were hard fought for against the conservative elite by liberals. Unions are an example.
Back to guns.
I've thought about getting a hand gun and learning to use it but for some reason it just doesn't hit high on the priority list. I suppose if things get to the point where I need my guns, I probably would not be able to shoot someone anyway. Not sure. I certainly find myself not liking the idea of having to pull the trigger on another human. I'd sooner beat them. I'd also thought of pepper spray but I'm not sure if I can own in legally in Canada.
I'd probably get a varmaint rifle before a handgun. It makes more sense out here on the farm where the coyotes are actually catching mice in plain view of the house! I'm getting chicks on tuesday so in a few months I'll have a reason to be shooting at them, or at least giving warning shots. I'd sooner they just stay back along the creek instead of me having to shoot them.
How many of you are thinking of me as a bleeding heart liberal right now? LOL. <expletives thought of, but not expressed> There are many sides to me too. |
