OPEC needs to deal with its own producers waste

While it is acceptable to see larger consumption for cooling, it must also be recognized that many of the OPEC block are looking the other way at wasteful use in vehicles, encouraged by low and subsidized prices. They are seeing a fantastic growth in their automobile populations and many of these are large and inefficient. Are they even looking at mass transit systems to invest in, rather than more magnificent, but future wise obsolete building complexes? All of these posing vast air conditioning loads.

Why couldn't OPEC look into this and evaluate the possibility of enhanced sales if these domestic uses could be constrained by higher taxes and elimination of subsidies? It wold make OPEC look better to the western customers of its petroleum too, sharing in conservation efforts and go a ways to building bridges between the energy producing countries and energy consuming ones, who are of course customers.

It may well come down to a new reality in which Saudis and Iranians are filing up their cars at whim, while Americans and Europeans are either paying through the nose or having to ration or queue up for energy. All the while seeing the Middle East building more energy hungry complexes like the Barj Dubai.

But overall their attempts at energy conservation have failed miserably.

They need to get their act together and start reducing rampant population growth and oil demand. Otherwise the OPEC nations will collapse when the oil runs out.

I picture a scenario in which thousands of rich Saudis, Persians, Kuwaitis, etc. hop into private jets and fly over to Europe when the going gets tough. Their money is already in Swiss banks and it would not be difficult to buy their way into European society.

It would make North America and Europe look better to the third world customers of its grain too, sharing in conservation efforts and go a ways to building bridges between the grain producing countries and grain consuming ones, who are of course customers.

It may well come down to a new reality in which North Americans and Europeans are filling up their cars at whim, while Africans and Asians are dying from starvation. All the while seeing the USA continue with their “non-negotiable” lifestyle.
