Solar power in China

Centralised photovoltaic systems are being installed in remote villages which previously had no access to electricity as part of the China Brightness Programme.
Shell Solar has, under contract, installed the systems in several provinces. Shell Solar has also provided panels for rooftop grids and for commercial uses such as producing electricity for traffic lights and water pumping.

Yes it is interesting indeed.
Avancis, the joint venture between Shell and Saint Gobain was formed to develop solar power modules using advanced CIS technology. Although the project is in Europe Shell has the Chinese market in mind because non silicon based panels can better compete with retail electricity.

China uses more solar power per capita than any other country, according to Jim Rogers. Solar-powered appliances are popular, and $2 billion worth of solar-generated hot water equipment has been sold.

I think the Chinese are ahead of the curve in renewable energy, largely due to government intervention. There's one law, for example, that obligates power companies to buy 100% of the capacity of a nearby wind power facility.

China is trying to reduce dependence on coal burning. That is why increasing natural gas use has become a priority for them as well as solar technology. I have written on the purchasing contracts PetroChina has signed with us, more than 4 million tonnes of LNG per annum of LNG from the Qatar and Australia operations etc.
But I haven't been to China to see firsthand the situation there. Maybe the demand for electricity is growing faster than anticipated.

I am here in China and have noted that there is not enough mention made of these positive developments in the mainstream western media. Perhaps people still think Asians are all blind and work in laundries.

Even here, in PeakOil - the yellow peril threads are a major obstruction to the truth. It is getting past the point of no return I feel.

China will not make war on the US, we can be assured of that. But others will, I can feel it in the wind.

It is getting to the point, noted in other threads and elsewhere in the media, of thinking beyond ¨the American era.¨ Some powers may be thinking, better to risk a nuclear winter and hope it will assuage global warming.

By far the biggest HVDC yet installed, rated at 6GW (!), travelling most of the way across China - 2000km.

Not to mention the only currently functioning pebble bed reactor prototype at Tsinghua Uni.

China is emerging as a major economic force. From a business standpoint that is wonderful, it opens up great opportunities. The ones who fear the rise of China are the political fanatics.
