Don’t worry, just a little bump - $70 is just around the corner. Short traders just keep making those margin calls, mortgage the house if you have to. Fortunes await you! PO is for pansies and doomers. At $70 short some more ..... it is going back to $22 .... the world is awash with oil ........ reality has nothing to do with it, its all in those charts!!!!!!!!!!

OK....so I've never had this happen before. I was trying to make a post and kept getting this error. I finally narrowed it down to this pair of sentences:

Quote:
It is a self loathing thing to get wrapped up in which evil megalomaniac is going to be selected as your next ruler.

Far better to just realize this system as being impressed on you from outside to control you than to get wrapped up in trying to select the least evil of the uniformly evil choices to be your ruler.

With the paragraph break where it is, the software will allow them. If you try to use them together without the break, you get a 406 error.
I tried changing around some of the words and couldn't find anything specific that changed it. Anybody got any ideas as to why?

I don't know, but I have that problem fairly often when I'm posting news stories. Very tedious and annoying.

The only thing I can figure is that it doesn't like certain strings of letters. Perhaps because they are code for symbols that aren't allowed.

I tried to use the correct spelling of naive, but got the very 406 code you described. Maybe cut-and-pasting Unicode is forbidden in this BBS.

Characters that are non-standard for English are not allowed. Aaron said it's to keep hackers out, or something like that.

But SPG's post doesn't have any of those. And I've had similar things happen to me, too. Sometimes just adding a blank line between sentences is enough to get it to go through.

I also have problems with some URLs. I have to TinyURL them to get them to post, even though they don't contain any non-English characters.

Yeah it sounds like an ASCII VS Unicode problem. Also the blank line
problem people are describing... If you are using a text editor like
notepad, (depending on the programs install settings) it may have
snuck in an invisible spacer code into your text that doesn't work with
the server. In fact if you are using word or any text editor and you
run into this problem after copying your text, the problem is
probably because of the text editor.

If you are writing your posts in the browser and you run into this
problem, try a different browser. The problem could be in your browser
text settings. And another problem that could cause what I'm hearing
might be OS keyboard settings. You may be typing with Unicode
settings and not know it... So there are a number of things that could
cause problems like what I'm hearing.

If you could post a few details, it might help...
1. I booted my WindowCrapP Machine
2. I logged onto my AOLOL internet
3. Opened Microsoft Exploiter to check installnewviruses.com
4. Then I went to peakoil.com and opened notpad to right a poost.
5. I copied my notpad tixt onto peakoil.com and the poost didn't wrk?

Hahaha... Laughing

Going back to notepad, if that's where the problem is... Click on
"Format" and unclick "word wrap". Then select all the text for your
post and paste it into your browser. And if that doesn't work, try
giving more details, but I suspect the problem is in something you
are doing and not with the server.

Tinyurl.com is great, but the cause of URL problems
is not because of bad text characters but because the URL doesn't
end in ".html" or has stuff like "?" question marks in it. And the
server's software wasn't programmed to recognize links with
unusual extensions or non standard things in the URL.
So that's a different problem...

I don't use a text editor. I use Firefox, and I ain't switching browsers. (FWIW, the news editors who use IE have the same problem, with the same URLs.)

I'm not so sure. Most news sites have a standard form for their URLs. If one of their URLs has odd symbols or ends in a strange extension, they all do. But only some of their URLs cause a problem, so I don't think that's the issue.

IME, the ones that cause problems are the ones that use strings of numbers as part of the path. Every once in awhile you hit a number string the server doesn't like, and it doesn't let you post the URL.

Ummm...XP media edition sp2, hardwire DSL running through a 3com switch and a D-Link router, firefox 2.0.0.12. I typed all the text in the little "post a reply" box. I did cut and paste a quote elsewhere in the post, but not near the two sentences in question. I tried deleting both entire sentences and re-typing them in case some little extra invisible character had snuck in, but it didn't help at all. Like I said, this was the first time it's happened to me out of several thousand posts, and it was just those two sentences that gave trouble out of probably thirty in the post.

Hmmm, well if it's just once in a while and typed in on the page...
It's probably an intermittent firefox glitch. Firefox is great, but it can
glitch like anything else. Maybe converting the copied text into the
text box, firefox messed up some of the text you typed earlier. And
it's probably not the operating system if it's only once in a while. So
you might be able to test this next time when it happens by:

1. Opening up windows explorer
2. Going to peakoil.com and logging in...
3. Going to the forum you want to post in...
4. Then typing/copying in the text the same way.

If internet explorer doesn't give you the same problem, it's probably
a firefox glitch. If it does the same thing in Explorer it still is probably
a browser text oddity, though there may not be any easy solution...

I'll try that next time. Thanks for the suggestion.

I kept getting these as well, found this thread, read

... scanned my post for illegal characters, found the word resume, removed the accented e's and voila! success. Apparently it doesn't like ASCII characters, and further tests have since confirmed this.

Thanks.
