I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

I use a cistern with 3-part filter: sediment, carbon, ultraviolet. I MAY not need the filter, but I'd rather be safe. The water could be clean today, then -- after the next time I connect the downspout -- it could be filled with critters.
I looked into making activated charcoal; it's steamed at high pressures. What I didn't understand then is that this just cleans the charcoal, breaking the bonds with the contaminants and washing them away. This makes the carbon more available to bond with future contaminants. Perhaps you know about all this, but it was new to me.
I had a well dug on my building site last fall. Hit two dry holes at the building site (clay), then went down close to the river and got a good flow (20gpm) at 40', where they had to stop because going any further would run into bedrock. Downside: water line from the well to the house site, ran over 700'. Total cost about $10K.
