Had we optimized our energy strategy to satisfy a constantly rising demand, we would now be discussing the building of the eleventh or twelveth reactor, not the sixth, as we are now. This of course would have meant a somewhat higher risk of a nuclear accident, and the more difficult dilemma of waste disposal. And given the eventually peaking supply of uranium, nuclear can only be a temporary energy source anyway.
But such extreme measures to secure energy flow wouldn't get much support among any "environmentally conscious" western people, especially ours. Finns are rather cautious by nature, unwillling to make drastic choices, even when necessary.

I bet Sweden will follow you and plan for more nuclear reactors in say 10 years even if it i a politically impossible thought today. Russia, the gas pipe line in the baltic, will probalby be a "help" there.
Nuclear waste is not a nice thing but since there hasnt been much effort on alternatives the last 30 years and not even today we're put in a postion where there isn't much of a choice, except to become a big importer. It's really a mess, the right wing parties and the social democrats won't question todays economic paradigm, dont rock the boat!, and the greens can't support fe nuclear energy for political reasons (not even small scale hydro power) so they can't take on the responsibility. Who should you support?

Exactly. In a democracy, political decisions are dictated by the greed, fear, complacency and self-righteousness of a population that wants to keep and raise their standard of living, draining resources and hurting the environment, while many of them regard themselves as higher moral beings for opposing the only reasonable option that could really mitigate the disaster.
But let's not worry, in a five to ten years' time or so, no-one will have any illusions about the need, cost and actual amount of availabe energy. It'll just be too late to change anything by then.
