For a minute there I thought I had to get off my couch, when all the while the fact is we don't have to do anything much but keep things afloat for just a few decades more! In fact, we'd best shut up about PO, because if our offspring finds out we knew about it all along, they'll turn and wring our necks come 2036!

Why was this discourse missing from American politics? Seems this MSNBC report should have been resurrected for Nov 2004.

I certainly haven't seen anything like as comprehensive as this come out in the mainstream media recently.

Why was it not discussed? You got me. It definitely got discussed here. I think it's some emotional thing with a lot of people who resent questioning the motives of the government. The Bush administration has successfully defined the arguments over and over and the ordinary citizen has obediently followed. The effect has been that debate is limited to benign subjects.

During the Vietnam war, a lot of grief was directed at American Solders from their fellow Americans. It was pretty despicable. The theory on behalf of the anti-war camp was to starve the military of recruits by making it look like being a Solder was like the most uncool thing you could do. Conservatives have never let the American people forget that this is what a liberal does - behave treasonously.

To quote the founder of Toyota, success is failure. The conservatives are very successful. It's only a matter of time before Americans direct their cynicism at Republicans.
