Land and farms useless????

That is a good one.

A novice farmer can have plenty of success in growing a lot of their own food if they are willing to work hard and listen. I think most people that grow their own gardens love to pass along what they have learned to someone willing to listen. Heck, the people that I know practically fall all over themselves to tell you what does good and what doesn't do so good in different areas.

I think many of the small farms in the United States are sitting idle due to better opportunities in other lines of work than farming. Once these opportunities dry up, I see alot of people like myself moving back to the family farm and starting to aggressively farm the idle land.

These small farms will be far too small for the government to worry about. They will be too busy trying to collect property taxes from out of work and starving townspeople.

It might be educational to look at what is happening in a middle class country that was suddenly reduced to third world status.

If you read that entire article (which is very short), it actually refers to peasants seizing unused land from rich estate owners, not the government seizing homesteads.

It's interesting how the original post was twisted to support fear.

Quote from the article: "Official data reveal five percent of Venezuelans possess 75 percent of land, the majority of which is unutilised, whilst the country imports 80 percent of food for consumption."

In my area that would translate into Gov. takings of gated golf course communities, elite equestrian properties and farms transformed to residential use that grow only petunias in planters on the front porch.

I see no advantage to the Gov or general populace in taking small, productive farms and turning them over to other possibly less productive farmers when there is so much "unutilised" land available.

I just got finished reading "The Good Life"... written by two educators who fled NYC during the Great Depression and bought a small farm in the hills of Vermont..... Anyone who doubts that becoming self reliant on a small farm in the midst of economic calamity is a good option should give this book a read. It's a classic. John.
