Imo you are living in one of the worst countries post peak - Ukraine, countries with fragile goverments and dependance on energy-intensive heavy industry wont do all right imo.

Yeah and 100% reliant on the Russians for energy, after the last election fiasco , have they burned their bridges?

Now lets see if leaf bites..... :-D

Scotland is England's.

Without the English, the scots would be still living in African style poverty.
Mel Gibson sacked Carlise. That was about it.
England sent in the midges to test the kilt
Scotamd is useful though for goverment experiments of one kind or another The Scot elite are handsomely and historically paid off by the English to keep the tossing caberers in check and they do so admirably.
It was/is the Scots who sold out the scottish people. Criminal really but money talks

KevO

england doesn't own scotland. there is a treaty of UNION, not a treaty of ownership in favour of england. anyway, im not a nationalist really, i was just pointing out that, if scotland were an independent country, it would own all the north sea oil and england would have none.

anyway, im of irish descent (grandad from Donegal), so im not toally pro-scottish anyway, as my country has a deep-rooted but hidden in polite circles hatred of irish catholics, of which i am one.

my only hope is that england get absolutely thrashed in the world cup. i cant believe some english commentators are actually saying you have a chance of winning it... hahaahhehhehhahhah. Rio Ferdinand one of the best defenders in the world? hhahheehohahhahah. Mark my words - Wayne Rooney will be 20 stone and an alcoholic by the time he's 25/

Yes indeed we are all going to die.
But what are we going to leave behind? A burnt cinder, a depleted heap, or methods and systems in place to provide hope.

A scot talking about football is like a woman talking about.............well football actually or a yank talking about.................that would be football again.
there are 5 types of people who, by law, should never be allowed to talk about football. That's Scots, women, the Irish, the welsh and yanks.

American football is NOT football, it's rugby for pussies.

No are we heck.
All you need is an AK47 and a knowledge of football and ideally live in the country of your birth.
So all those scots seeking the warmer climes of England will have to go back to haggis hunting

Hmn, well as I've pointed out before, Britain’s population around the second world war is much the same as it is now, if you take out immigration. Before the second world war oil had virtually nil importance, the country was coal based and we still have 2-300 years of that plus some of the best wind and tidal resources anywhere.

I can think of worse places: Spain, Belgium, Holland, Germany, any of the former eastern block where grinding poverty is the norm now.

I don't think personal transportation is going to be quite so important anywhere in the world and there will be a backlash about that at some stage. I few road blocks that will be broken up and mass sackings, possibly even a general strike at some stage.

Import/exports shouldn't be a problem. We're exporting as much as we're importing now food wise.

Wildwell, old chum, I think there's a conspiracy round these parts not to take Leaf seriously, when he blathers on about how this sainted isle, this albion set in a silver sea is going the way of the dodo dropping...

So please don't refute his posts with facts..doesn't make any diff.

AAAAAAAAAHHHH I'm dooomed to die with nothing but PB's bum to eat and I'm a veggie...........

You know people ask me why Engalnd will have it worse off then other mainland European nations...and they think that because I have a dim view of England future or I am just anti -Britian..

Well, I suspect that most islands will not be good places to ride out peak oil. Including my home state, Hawaii. I love it dearly, but it is currently home to several times the population that lived there in the days of the ancient Polynesians. Everything is imported. Already, the cost of living is the highest in the U.S. for that reason. Peak oil will only make it worse.

After 9/11, when all planes were grounded, you could feel the panic in the air. Hawaii is so isolated - just rock in the middle of the Pacific, connected to the rest of the world by cheap oil.

I'm trying to convince my parents to move to the mainland and live with me, now that they've retired. So far, no success, but I'll keep trying.

I do not understand why islands in themselves should be bad. If they are densely populated, yes a problem, but a densely populated mainland area would be just as bad. Sea transport with sailing ships surely can go on also after all oil is gone.
