Speaking of the 80s, I was a young newlywed then and living in Los Angeles. My wife and I went to the Comedy Club on the Sunset Strip and had a terrific time. Humor calls for a certain willingness to be amused. We were willing alright, and laughed our asses off.

What people will find to be funny can take many interesting twists and turns. Consider Arcimboldo and his paintings of people made of fruits or vegetables:

I think having a sense of humor requires a willingness to be silly and unserious. I am goofy and make fun of things in every situation...sometimes I get dirty looks, but most often I can make people (even those who do not know me) laugh.
I am sad to see that sarcasm is now considered the height of humor, because it is not humor...it is just nasty for the most part.
Neat picture PMS, never saw it before.

A sense of humour has (at least) two important functions:
(a) it encourages you to think and explore new ideas
(b) if helps individuals and groups get through bad patches
Some of the funniest times I've had are when tired with exhaustion and sleep deprivation, and using humour to keep people going. I'm sure looking back it would seem like we were on drugs, but there you go.
A couple of standard lines:
(1) you shouldn't have joined up if you can't take a joke
(2) don't worry, it could be worse
etc

To me humor is the ability to "twist" your perspective like a carnival funhouse mirror. Here is an example let's say a engineer walks into a room. He doesn't see a room in the traditional sense. They visualize structural supports, wiring, and power conduits. When I walk into the same room I visualize the illegal construction workers laughing at the Gringos. They are laughing because yesterday's McDonald's is now sealed behind a sheet of drywall as payback for such a low "off the books" wage.
I just can't go a day without cutting up. Just like a otter sliding around on a muddy riverbank, one way or another I got to get my kicks.

A sense of humor is an indication of a strong intellect. I think you can draw your conclusions on recent comic trends from that in itself. Although PC has stifled a lot of creativity as well which is why SNL suffered so much past the 80's. Imagine trying to do the Buckwheat character today...
"Jane you ignorant slut, Buckwheat has been shot."

A Good Start. I know you've heard it before. After reading the story below is there any wonder why we all hate lawyers. Quote: A Charlotte, NC, lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire, among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued.... and WON! (Stay with me now.) In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance ;company that >the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire" and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires."NOW FOR THE BEST PART.... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This is a true story and was the First Place winner in the recent Criminal Lawyers Award Contest. ONLY IN AMERICA....NO WONDER OTHER COUNTRIES THINK WE'RE NUTS!! Sorry no link. Duke of Indiana
