Here's my prediction, albeit more long than near term.
My bold prediction is that the Internet will save us more than you presently think.
In just the past few years, the business of not leaving one's house and doing things online has saved a lot of energy. Just think about it.. Netflix for movies, registering to vote over the Internet and then voting by mail, online shopping, getting car insurance (I'm happy I never have to look at an agent again), setting up and using a bank account (I've rarely been to my bank in the last couple years, other than ATM).
The list goes on and on. Telecommuting, a huge money saver for employers, is continuing to grow. Online pharmacies. Online college courses are growing briskly -- so much so that we're seeing the absurdity of students on CAMPUS staying in their dorms and doing classes on the net.
People are also socializing more and more over the net. This forum, for one. The twitters, text messaging, myspace, etc. And millions of people are spending the time equivalent of a second job in virtual worlds.
All this technology is pushing more and more towards us getting things done without requiring every one of us to physically travel to so many places to do it.

 To be bold.
1. By 2011 the decline in world oil production is recognized as irreversible.
2.The US military will be building CTL plants in the west large enough to supply all military liquid fuel needs.
3. Algae oil farms and refinerys are being built across the south where ever water, fertilizer and CO2 can be brought together cheaply. A government price support of $4.50/gal plus tax breaks for investors has created a steady flow of capital to this end and the percentage of domestic fuel supplied from algae is growing exponentally.
4. The price of oil trough of 09 went as low as 35$ but was as short lived as the 145$ peak mountain of 08.
5. The UAW no longer exists after the collapse of the big three, the advent of national health care and an audit of union books.

Quote: Mark my words ... in 5-10 years ... our economy will be burned out and no recovery within our lifetimes will happen. Oil will probably be less than 10% of what it is now, but it won't matter because no one will be able to afford any liquid energy, whether you're a commuter or a manufacturer. Recovery won't occur for another 100 years later (because it will take that long for society and it's economies to die and start over).
I'm pretty sure I won't be here in 100 years, but I hope to be around in 5-10 years to see if this prediction pans out.

By 2013, most yards will have vegetable gardens. Especially, forgotten perennials like asparagus and rhubarb will be started in 85% of the yards.

How about this?
The s will not hit the fan. Things will go on much as they have for the past several decades. The paranoid loners running off to their doomsteads to live off the land will look foolish. A mixture of coal-powered electricity to supply batteries and various bio-fuels keep the drive-in utopia going despite my wishes that automobiles and car-centric suburbia largely disappear.

This one is from today:

1 oil production will fall dramatically by 2010 (due to war more than supply)
2 as oil productions fall large restrictions of its use wil hit the us and other nations. the oil that is left will be reserved for gov, farmers and transportation of goods services (mainly by rail) by 2011(no train no goods)
3 these regulated supplies will only go to large population centers causing mass migration of the population.
4 rural areas become ghost towns except for the self susstained
5 mass riots for food and basic services
6 basic services will be rerouted to these major population centers only so if you are in the country its lights out. which means no water on public water supplies
7 weather patterns continue to grow more erractic due to global warming, ie..the tipping point which will cause a global and rapid cooling, when the ocean currents grind to a halt.
8 wars over basic essentials will become common. war for oil, water, food

(edit) Here you want a #9 here it goes
The biggest thing to fear in the U.S. will be our own Military turned against the civi's in a vein attempt for control of the masses.
10 man turn on fellow man as food and water become increasingly hard to find.those who have planed for the future had better be able to protect it.
11 complete and total break down of all forms of government around 2012 or shortly thereafter
12 And as for 2012...BUCKLE UP THATS WHEN THINGS GET BAD...LOL
13 pole shift causes massive damage to the entire world. 10's of millions will die.
14 earthquakes, fires, tornados, tidal waves like the world has never seen.
15 Those that survive face starvation

If you are quoting me I said it would begin by 2010, it wont be an overnight thing by any means but a steady increase to that point yes.
And my moto is hope for the best, Plan for the worst.
