This is one of the better articles I have read regarding possible confrontation with Iran, written by William Thomas who served four years as an officer-in-training in the US Navy Reserves before resigning his commission over the criminal folly of the Vietnam War.

There's still 15 days until the election, be patient.

I still say Spring '07. The '07-'08 congress won't be that important regardless of outcome. The results of the Nov '08 vote could be staggeringly important so the Admin would likely try to get the timing just right for maximal support for that time period.

But say you were Dick Cheney and you knew that peak oil was going to happen sooner than expected and because you want to ensure that the US maintained global supremacy by controlling the ME oilfields, and not be blamed domestically for the ensuing economic chaos you decide on a pre-emptive attack? That way you can attempt to maintain control at home, and do so with an economy that's still reasonably intact (rather than waiting for it to be pole-axed by the effects of peak oil) and powerful enough to perhaps pull off such an audacious gambit. It might not work - but what have you got to lose if you were Dick Cheney and you knew what we already suspect?

Looks like Iran has realized that, as a gasoline importer, it is vunerable to an embargo, and wants to correct the problem:
Quote: Iran, $16bn refining plans
The National Iranian Oil Company has drawn up 12 plans for the construction of new oil refineries and the development of existing ones, reported the Tehran Times citing the Mehr News Agency. It has been estimated that around $16bn would be needed to carry out the project, which would include the development of the Abadan refinery and the provision of turnkey contracts for the construction of others.

This is without a doubt one of the scariest threads on PO. I liked the article under Why the US Will Attack Iran. Wow! If it all is coming down soon anyway, why not gamble it all? It does make a certain dark sense.
I wonder sometimes if we are secretly allied with Iran, however. We have done everything that they would have done if they could. We got the Taliban out of there, and liberated the Shia near Bamiyan, and then practically installed a shia theocracy in Iraq. Sadr and his Mahdi army are definitely more allied with Iran. The real losers in this war have been the Saudi inspired Wahabbis and the Baathists. Maybe like Reagan we are in contact with the Persians after all. Actions speak louder than words. I could be wrong.

Has there been any developments on Iran's Oil Bourse in the past weeks?
I searched and could not find anything since a tentative date was set for start up of Mar 2006???
There seems to be little to no discussion in the media since then. WTF?
Anyone heard anything lateley? I had seen a report about "technical problems" delaying the start up. Read in that what you will, I guess.

Bush doesn't fear attack on Iran - Israeli envoy
Quote: U.S. President George W. Bush will not hesitate to use military force against Iran if other options fail, Israel's outgoing ambassador to the United States said in an interview published on Wednesday.
"I know President Bush well ... From his standpoint, a nuclear Iran, ayatollahs with a bomb, is unacceptable," Danny Ayalon told Israel's Ma'ariv newspaper.

Well the Neocon's are more likely to consult with Israel than with Congress.

They are advertizing a special tonight at 7 and 9 PM Eastern US time. Amadinajadhd in his own words or something like that. The hour long special will be on CNN Headline News.
Suprizingly they held this back for a week instead of running it before the mid term elections.
Any idea's on what we will see?

Iran to become net oil importer.
Quote: 10/31/06 Platt's Oilgram News 6 2006 WLNR 19757509 Platts Oilgram News The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. October 31, 2006 Volume 84; Issue 209

Iran could be net oil importer by 2016 : PFC
Slow exploration and rising domestic demand are eroding export capacity Kate Dourian
Iran could become a net importer of crude oil by 2016 or even earlier if the giant Azadegan and Yadavaran oil fields are not developed in time to stem a steeper than expected decline in production, PFC Energy said in a report.
"Based on mounting evidence of significant declines in production, the glacial pace of exploration and development, and rapidly increasing domestic demand, Iran's crude export capacity may fall dramatically in coming years. Without a fundamental and nearly immediate shift in policies, Iran's net crude exports could fall to zero in as little as nine years," the Washington-based consultants said in the first segment of Iran's " Oil Card" series.
Since Kazem Vaziri-Hamaneh was appointed oil minister in December, progress in the energy sector has been limited by "government interference, the gridlock at the Ministry of Petroleum produced by last year's change of government, delays caused over buyback contracts, international investor hesitation due to the standoff over Iran's nuclear program, and an increasing reliance on domestic companies," PFC said.
"If an escalating rate of crude production decline (even with a probabilistic allowance for E&D) is projected in parallel with the nation's growing crude demand, the dire consequences are apparent," the report said.
"Potentially becoming a net importer of crude by 2016 (sooner if the vital Azadegan and Yadavaran fields are not brought online in due course), Iran risks the loss of the government's fiscal underpinnings, and a fundamental alteration of its entire position on the regional and international stage," it said.
Predictions of a precipitous decline in production capacity were magnified after a recent claim by Vaziri-Hamaneh that Iran was experiencing "a natural decline of 500,000 b/d per year, roughly double previous estimates," and present a "catastrophic decline scenario," PFC said.
