Islamic Republic of Iran was introduced as holding the world’s largest proven gas reserves for the second year in a row, ahead of Russia.

The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) in an announcement said the measured reserves of natural gas in Iran have increased to above 34 trillion cubic meters (tcm) which is about 1.4 tcm more than the reserves of Russia.

NIGC reported the figure had been provided by BP in its 2015 Statistical Review of World Energy and puts Iran ahead of Russia whose reserves stand at about 32.6 tcm for a second consecutive year.

The report further adds that Iran’s gas production saw an increase of 5.2 percent in 2014 to reach a total of 172.6 bcm.

Reserves increase in either nation only bolsters their COLLECTIVE natural gas pricing powers in a ‘new and improved’
    OPEC.

So at he 2014 production rate Iran has 197 years worth of NG. Same old problem with NG: if you can’t get it to the buyers then it isn’t much different then not having it in the first place.

All part of the developing pipeline dynamics going on in the ME, Turkey, Greece, Russia, China, etc.

Gas is a complimentary good to oil, it does most of the same things as oil except for the chemicals and transport fuels (oil being more energy dense for transport), without oil would there be a gas industry? For heat and electricity, Ok, but could gas replace oil? I’d like to try but it would be redundant to try it as long as oil is around. We will be deep into climate destruction territory by the time we need to switch because of oil related economic changes.
