Reserves raided for fuel costs

CHICOPEE – Municipal departments are continuing to raid other parts of their budgets or tap into the city’s cash reserves to keep up with the high cost of fuel this year.

The Public Library raided payroll accounts last week to come up with an additional $10,000 to cover utility costs, according to Director Nancy M. Contois.

The Golf Course Commission asked for, and received, an $18,000 infusion from cash reserves to pay for higher utility, motor fuel, and propane costs.

It was the third time since early February that city department heads had asked the Board of Aldermen to approve additional spending because the run-up in fuel prices is wreaking havoc with their budgets.
