New industrial revolution on way, says HSBC

BRITAIN is set for a second industrial revolution as the traditional industries of manufacturing and farming are replaced by robotics, gaming and wind farms, a major new report predicted today.

HSBC’s Future of Business report is forecasting a new regional geography, with the birth of five new `supercities’ and regions deriving their status, income and prestige from new income streams such as biotech, stem cell research, innovation, gaming and even alternative business models.

But while it says Manchester is well placed to exploit its skills in robotics and stem cell research, it predicts it will not be one of the big five – listing Liverpool, Leeds, Brighton, Newcastle and London.

Noel Quinn, head of HSBC Commercial Banking, said: “This report unveils some positive new trends that could alter the shape of the working world tomorrow.”
