Lessons from the Soviet Collapse: A Conversation with Dmitry Orlov thumbnail

They can’t really grasp the fact that everything they’ve built has stopped working, because their ideology forbids them from doing it. So that’s identical with what was going on in the Soviet Union.” -Dmitry Orlov

On the Global Research News Hour this week, we spend the hour discussing the looming collapse scenarios facing the United States with Russian-American engineer Dmitry Orlov.

Orlov’s perspective on collapse is informed by his extended trips to his former homeland before and during its collapse.

Orlov believes and states that the former Soviet Union was set up to be resilient in the face of collapse. This, he believes is not the case in the US or Canada.

In this interview, Orlov also comments on the current situation with low oil prices, peak oil and its impact on agriculture, Russian moves in alignment with China, overtures toward the EU, the politics of austerity, the Ukraine Civil War as Anglo-Imperialist Departure Strategy, and much more.

Dmitry Orlov has written two books, Reinventing Collapse: The Soviet Experience and American Prospects as well as the Five Stages of Collapse: Survivors’ Toolkit. Mr. Orlov is also the author of the blog cluborlov.com and is a much sought after geo-political analyst.

First a word (or two) from our first Female President, Sarah Palin:

Speaking at the Iowa Freedom Summit in Des Moines on Saturday.
    Here’s an excerpt:

“Things must change for our government. Look at it. It isn’t too big to fail. It’s too big to succeed! It’s too big to succeed, so we can afford no retreads or nothing will change with the same people and same policies that got us into the status quo. Another Latin word, status quo, and it stands for, ‘Man, the middle-class everyday Americans are really gettin’ taken for a ride.’ That’s status quo, and GOP leaders, by the way, y’know the man can only ride ya when your back is bent. So strengthen it. Then the man can’t ride ya, America won’t be taken for a ride, because so much is at stake and we can’t afford politicians playing games like nothing more is at stake than, oh, maybe just the next standing of theirs in the next election.”

  2. bobinget on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 6:30 am

See..Russia thought itself too big to fail…
“It was too big to succeed”
    Yes, Too Big to Succeed!

Now Russia is stuck in status quo, that’s Latin for
‘Boris is being taken for a ride’

Americans! Don’t be tempted to ride on Putin’s sleigh, no matter how many kinds of vodka he tries to temp with.

Dmitry must be pissed the USSA hasn’t collapsed already. Sarah Palin is just your typical neocon warmonger.

  4. Davy on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 7:59 am

Bobby, the American plutocracy of thieves in DC are no better. It is a trinity of politicians, industrialist, and system managers in an unholy revolving door of rape and pillage of an exceptional political and social system. It is just a different form of the same wealth transfer and social cannibalism. Russia is no better or no worse. In fact the US is probably worse because the host has so much more meat to feast on by the horrible beast of exploitation. Wake up Bobby from your thoughts of American exceptionalism and see the vile moral righteousness playing out in DC & NY. Turn the flag upside down and start waiving it.

There is no need to listen to this puk unless you have agenda filters on. We know the Orlov and global research agendas just like Fox News and the false prophets like the Yergins and BAU economist agendas. These people are talented people that are lying by distorting the truth through selective use of facts through propaganda technics. Both sides of this game of deceit and hatred use pretty much similar technics. These technics are successful because the sheeples on both sides have needs for answers to fit their mythological world views and dark wants.

If you need to listen to these people then use agenda filters just as listening to Fox News or C-span. They are a source of facts and represent important positions within BAU. Let’s face it this BAU decay is breaking down into a decaying multipolar world of competing wants in a shrinking pie. I will mention that this is the human dark side in action. The higher levels of humanity cannot be found in these areas of hate and division.

We must acknowledge no locals or regions can decouple. This interconnected global world has no choice but to work together as long as we can to paradoxically use BAU to transition out of BAU. Hopefully some locals will survive and the human species can continue on. We are facing systematic collapse along with environmental collapse. These morons like Dimtry and global research chose to stoke the fires of hatred and deception. Well, maybe it is for the best. It appears the only way to mitigate and adjust to the end of BAU is population decline. Maybe these folks that preach division and hatred should succeed then we can ensure a halving of the population in a generation if we are lucky. If we are not lucky then it may be the Stone Age or extinction.

To be fair to Dimitry and global research they are insignificant in regards to the overwhelming deceit and lies of the global MSM dominated by the west. The global plutocrats have a lock on this door to the pilot seat. The sheeples and the enlightened passengers are stuck in coach. So in reality except for sites like PO Dimtry and global research have little traction. So let them bark like small dogs at a big dog’s fight. It won’t make much difference except on site like this where it will stir lively conversations.

Corruption in Moscow or Washington doesn’t hold
a candle to the plight of Nigerians. It’s almost criminal to make such an invidious comparison.

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/25/africa/nigeria-boko-haram-battle-maiduguri

It’s just such corruption that invites in groups like Boko Haram or ISIS or dozens of al-Qeda copy-cats. The Nigerian Army derives it’s pay from intimidating oil thieve’s into forking over protection money.

Extortionists, bag men, are not trained to fight another army.

Defending Nigeria for multi-national oil will take
    ‘volunteers’ (soldiers of fortune) .
The time is already upon us Davy. There needs to be
some sort of “International Foreign Legion’ modeled after France’s colonial service. The money is there.
Hire retired military to train violent criminals, open the prisons! Don’t worry about these nut bags coming home, just send them to yet another oily
    trouble spot.

“Saving BAU” will be rat there on their flag directly under a cute cartoon of a stripper well pumping
    away.

The first time Russia collapsed they could blame it on communism. This time they can blame it on Putin.

  8. noobtube on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 11:13 am

Is there a degenerate that is actually promoting a colonial army (invasion) in Africa?

American degenerates are scumbags to the very end.

With a failed banking system (see Bush, a corrupt election system (see Bush again), a corrupt judicial system (see cop killings/mass incarceration), a corrupt school system (look what the kids are “taught”), a corrupt workforce (everyone wants to be a millionaire), a corrupt business class (always looking for shortcuts, safety be damned), Americans actually have no shame to point fingers at others?

Americans are degenerates to their core.

  9. Speculawyer on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 11:33 am

I’m starting to feel bad for Orlov now. He’s been proven so wrong yet he refused to adapt to the new information such that he now has to cling to conspiracy theories and highly improbable events to maintain his bogus narrative. Basically, he’s become a nut.

  10. Davy on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 11:44 am

NOober-dubber, I wanted to tell you how ignorant and lacking critical insight you are. You have little in the way of real facts or insightful research. Why don’t you link something or show some grey matter with something of original content. You are just showing your reptilian brain at work with hate spews. I can call you a pussy and limp dick because no one here except maybe Mak would care. We know why Mak likes you because you are an anti-western “angendist” that is a Davy creation describing you as having an agenda with no concern for truth or facts. You in fact are a very poor agendist because you have no facts to use selectively. At least give us some of the other sites you visit so we can get an idea on how to filter out the sewer liquids to find something that is worth our reading besides puke and feces. Well, I take that back some of your spews are entertaining. If you are trying to hurt my American feelings you are failing. Instead you are entertaining me.

  11. GregT on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 1:05 pm

BAU will either be ended voluntarily, or involuntarily. One ending has a future for mankind, the other doesn’t.

The only nuts among us are those that are pretending that BAU can continue on indefinitely, when it clearly can not.

  12. noobtube on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 1:07 pm

    Just admit it.

    You Americans are trouble-makers.

Everywhere Americans go on this planet, they start trouble (Africa, Asia, the Western Hemisphere, Oceania, even Antarctica and the Arctic).

And, as Orlov stated, when Americans can’t get their way, they leave behind a total mess and continue to sow confusion every chance they get(split Korea; split Vietnam; meddle in Haiti; finance rebels all over Africa… see Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Liberia, Libya, etc.; invade Iraq, Afghanistan; bomb Syria, and the Sudan, try or kill leaders in Chile, Cuba, Nicaragua; deal drugs in Colombia, Afghanistan, and Mexico; sabotage economies in Russia, throughout Africa, and the Middle East; waging biological warfare in Liberia, Nigeria, Madagascar, and the COngo; and on and on and on).

The historical record shows Americans love to go to other countries and spread chaos.

    Beware the Americans.

We are Americans and we are here to help.

  13. Plantagenet on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 1:19 pm

I think Speculawyer is right with his opinion that Orlov has become a cranky nut. Orlov has backed Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and supports the greater Russia land grab and ethnic cleansing that the Russians are carrying out there. Its a reprehensible position to take, IMHO.

  14. Davy on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 1:49 pm

Planter, you really believe what you just said in the above comment with no fairness and balance for the reprehensible actions by the U.S. and EU in the Ukraine. Surely Planter, knowing Europe and Russia like you say you do and knowing Snark when you see it you would still have that position.

  15. Plantagenet on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 2:27 pm

    Hi Daver

Russia is invading Ukraine–not the EU or the USA.

    Cheers!

  16. Davy on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 2:45 pm

Planter gots a new bone. Planter, look, a bone is a bone. You try to take a bone away from a dog they will instinctively react. You obsessively hold positions without balanced support. The most recent was the “glut” before that Obama. You can’t see any US & EU mischief in the Ukraine? I smell snark on your breath Planter.

  17. GregT on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 3:16 pm

    Plant said:

    Hi Daver

If Russia was invading Ukraine Plant, Kiev would have fallen months ago.

  18. GregT on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 3:22 pm

Plant also said, equally as ridiculous:

“Ukraine and supports the greater Russia land grab and ethnic cleansing that the Russians are carrying out there.”

So in your world Plant, which ethnic group is it that Russia is cleansing from Ukraine?

  19. Plantagenet on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 3:46 pm

    @Daver

It looks you’ve got a new bone. If you can’t see that Russia is invading the Ukraine then I question your judgement.

    @GregT

The Russians are ethnically cleansing the Ukrainians out of the Crimea and out of eastern Ukraine. The Jews are fleeing as well, after some anti-semitic rhetoric from he ethnic Russians carrying to the invasion. And of course he Tartars in the Ukraine suffered genocide under Stalin, and are already being persecuted by their new Russian masters.

    Read this, dude:

    http://www.timesofisrael.com/jewish-communities-decimated-in-eastern-ukraine/

  20. Davy on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 4:11 pm

Greg, to be fair to Planter he has a point. There is likely bilateral ethnic clensing. The Russians have plenty of experience with that activity over the years.

  21. GregT on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 4:29 pm

It isn’t the East that is bombing the West, yet. It is Kiev that is marching on Eastern Ukraine. The people there were living together in peace, before the Maidan uprisings in Kiev.

There is a strong divide between the Galician Bandarites and the Russian Orthodox Church. The Galicians supported Hitler during his Third Reich. The Russians fought against them in WW2. The hatred still remains strong. The Russians fought along side of us in the west, against the very people that are now marching on Eastern Ukraine today.

  22. J-Gav on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 4:49 pm

Good points GregT. If anyone thinks that after WWII, Russia is going to stand idly by and watch a border country become infested with neo-nazis, they have lost their mind, which seems very much to be the case for Western geopolitical ‘strategists’.

For sure, it’s not all good guys here, bad guys there. Nevertheless, 80% of Russians understand why Putin is pissed off with the situation there. Do 80% of Europeans really want another basket-case country in their midst? I sincerely doubt it, especially since Europe is probably in the initial stages of dissolution anyway.

So yeah, go for it, EU expanders, shall we have Turkey, Albania, Lower-fucking Slobovia-Moldovia slide right in too? A few fireworks for the EU retirement party, anyone? Why not go after South Ossetia too? We really need that one!

  23. GregT on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 6:28 pm

Here’s some interesting info for Plant, or anyone else that might be interested.

Plant, you say that the Jews are fleeing Ukraine because of the Russians?

Lets see what the World Jewish Congress has to say:

Ukrainian Union “Svoboda” – Social-National Party of Ukraine

“….an organization, which now has an ambitious name “Svoboda”, was founded in 1991 as a social-nationalist party of Ukraine. Let’s not forget that the Hitler’s party was also named as a National-Socialist party and then it will become clear who we are dealing with. It is enough to remember Oleg Tiagnybok’s notorious speech at the mountain Yavorina in 2004 at the grave of one of Bandera’s field commanders…”

“Ever since, Tiagnybok together with his fellow campaigners from “Svoboda” have repeatedly made difference in their struggle against “aliens”. Especially memorable is their action of protest against Chasidim pilgrimage to Uman at the beginning of the Jewish New Year two years ago. A new round of this orgy began at the end of last year when “Svoboda” entered the Verkhovna Rada.”

I’ll give you a clue, the person that isn’t from the US, is Tiagnybok. Our newly found friend.

  24. Makati1 on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 7:01 pm

Put down the few persons who tell it like it is because you are in deep denial. I laugh at you all. You are so full of the government cool aid and the life time of propaganda brainwashing that you cannot see the forest for the trees. Too bad. I’ll just keep putting in my two cents worth and enjoy the show. I’m sure that most in Europe never thought Hitler was dangerous either. Or that the assassin that killed Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, was going to start a world war.

The USSA is the biggest terrorist organization in the world and is supporting directly, or indirectly, most, if not all, of the other “terrorist” organizations loose in the world today. But you will not see it until the 2×4 of reality knocks you down and beats you up. The indoctrination is complete.

  25. steve on Mon, 26th Jan 2015 10:33 pm

Orlov is a biased douche bag….I can’t read any of his bullshit…he is shitting his pants right now and trying to spin things to fit his pro russian beliefs….I was wondering how long before we would hear more blabbering from him after his last piece of how low oil prices would not effect the Russian economy…Where is the weird porn pictures normally associated with his article though…

  26. Makati1 on Tue, 27th Jan 2015 12:43 am

steve, you are Russo-phobic, I see …lol. It is a common disease in America, but if the Russians had not beaten Hitler in WW2, you would be speaking German today. And, no, the Americans didn’t win the war. They were barely in it. Only at the end did they even try.

Had Hitler taken Russia and it’s resources, today’s world would be a lot different. Likely the West coast would speak Japanese. and the Eastern half, German. America does not have a record of wins, just ‘also rans’ who claim victory that is usually gained by other’s blood and resources.

  27. GregT on Tue, 27th Jan 2015 1:22 am

So who exactly is that pretty girl posing with Tiagnybok?

Could that be the US State Department’s one and only Victoria Nuland? The same Victoria Nuland recorded so eloquently stating “fuck the EU”? The same Victoria Nuland that is married to
Robert Kagan, the Co-Founder of The Project for a New American Century (PNAC), a member of The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR,) and the foreign policy advisor to several U.S. Republican presidential candidates as well as Hillary Clinton?

Nah, couldn’t be the same Vicky, could it?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YSFNOaJupE

No US involvement in the violent bloody coup that lead to the overthrow of the democratically elected government in Ukraine, right?

Of course US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has some seemingly important questions for Vicky, but nobody seemed to notice.

Mak, your agenda seeking enabling tendencies came out in that comment. Whenever an anti-western agenda pops up you immediately support it and bash all who rightly call into question the selectivity of the message and facts. Orlov is a smart guy that could contribute significantly to the doom movement but he chooses to ingratiate his tendencies at hatred and division. Mak, you and Orlov are two pees in a pod and that pod is call propaganda. If either of you showed balance, objectivity, and fairness your messages could be helpful instead you are goal seeking and mongering.
